Black Friday. A mess in person, but thanks to the explosion of e-commerce, you can hunker down at home while avoiding the crush of humanity at all the brick & mortar stores. Cyber Monday? Still also worth paying attention to, but many brands and retailers have outstanding discounts being offered online today. There has been a bit of Black Friday “creep” this year, with some of these deals launching pre-Thanksgiving, but today is still the day when most make their push. Here’s some of the best style-centric deals for men running today. Picks are scattered about when something was too good not to specifically mention.
Nordstrom: Up to 40% off Black Friday Event
- Nordstrom Flat Front Wool Gabardine Trousers – $65.98 ($98.50)
- 1901 ‘Casey’ Longwing Derby – $59.96 ($99.95)
- Wallin & Bros. Wool Flannel Sport Coat – $264.65 ($395)
- Nordstrom Perforated Leather Gloves – $32.90 ($49.50)
- Brooks Bros Slim Fit French Cuff Dress Shirt in White or Light Blue – $55.20 ($92)
- Nordstrom Stripe Cashmere Scarf – $65.90 ($99.50)
- Skagen Square Dial Watch (full review here) – $90.45 ($135)
Yep, Nordstrom is doing the Black Friday thing now. That changed a year or two ago. They seem to take what’s in their sale section, and inject it with a good chunk of new stuff for these big shopping days (a lot of the stuff that was already in there appears to be the same price?). Over 4300 items, and as always, everything ships and returns free.
J. Crew Factory: 50% off + Free Shipping @$50+ w/ THANKS
- Worsted Wool Thompson Suit Jacket & Slim or Standard Pant – $218 (usually $300s)
- SLIM Merino V-Neck or Crew Neck Sweater – $32.00
- Lambswool Colorblock Sweater – $34.50
- SLIM Textured Merino Elbow Patch Sweater – $39.50
- Carson Laptop Bag – $34.50
Excellent. For months, they’ve excluded their flagship worsted-wool Thompson suits from promos and codes. But this time they get the cut. Slim and standard fit pants available. Lately these things have been running in the low to mid $300s. Full review here. Those slim textured merino elbow patch crews are great down-time sweaters, and have been sticking oddly close to their “valued at” price this fall. Not so now. Code THANKS gets you free shipping once your shopping cart gets north of $50.
J. Crew: 30% off select full price, 40% off sale items w/ HOLIDAY
- Cotton Unconstructed Ludlow Blackwatch Sportcoat – $159.60 ($228)
- Italian Wool Flannel Ludlow – $229.60 ($328)
- Ludlow Pinstripe Italian Wool Jacket & Matching Slim Pant – $317.98 ($660)
- Broadmoor Quilted Jacket – $138.60 ($198)
- Cashmere Wide Rib Watchcap – $68.60 ($98)
Fine, but not an amazing Black Friday promotion. Highlight is probably the fantastic Italian Flannel sportcoat in “blueberry” dropping to just under $230. Size shown above is a 40R. Sadly their velvet shawl collar blazer does NOT get the 30% off cut, and neither does any of their suiting. But, it has been a while since the sale section dipped to an extra 40% off. Some would say that pinstripe suit is just too light in shade for this time of year… but why not anchor it with a light blue shirt, black knit tie, and some black loafers or dress boots? That contrast might look pretty sharp.
UNIQLO: Free Shipping No Min. + Select Black Friday Specials
- Extra Fine Merino V-Neck, Crew Neck , or Turtleneck – $29.90 ($39.90)
- Cashmere V-Neck, Crew Neck, or Turtleneck – $79.90 ($89.90)
- (+J) 100% Wool Flannel Stripe Pants – $59.90 ($69.90)
So it’s not the most amazing sale, just a ten dollar savings on a few select items, but the free shipping no min. offer means you can pick up one sweater at the lower price and not get dinged on shipping charges. Their extra fine merino sweaters fit very nice through the sides (think J. Crew Factory SLIM silhouette) but do know that they are VERY thin. Ultra light. Great for layering, but not for solid warmth. Size shown above is a medium on 5’10”, 185.
Haberdash: 25% off w/ BLACKFRIDAY (excludes sale, Alden, etc.)
- Filson Original Briefcase – $186 ($248)
- Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots in Color #8 – $261 ($348)
- Barbour Tartan Gloves – $66.75 ($89)
Guessing that Filson briefcase and the Wolverine 1000 mile boots (in Horween’s burgundy leaning color #8 no less) won’t last all that long. REMEMBER… items on discount at Haberdash can only be exchanged or returned for store credit. Code is only good through Black Friday, 11/28/14.
Brooks Bros: 30% off Sweaters & Outerwear + 15% off Sitewide (stackable)
Brooks Brothers doesn’t usually do anything huge for Black Friday, but the stacking of the 15% off the already marked down coats and sweaters is better than what they usually do. Meanwhile, while 15% off isn’t an enormous cut, it’s still a discount on the hard-to-find-on-sale goods from Filson.
GAP: 50% Everything w/ BLKFRIDAY
- Engineer Stripe Lambswool Blend Crew – $27.48 ($54.95)
- Wide Rugby Stripe Lambswool/Nylon Scarf – $17.47 ($34.95)
- Wool Mac Jacket – $74.00 ($148)
GAP has been on a roll lately, and their new arrivals strike a nice balance between casual but not boring, solid feel but not too pricey. Half off is as good as GAP gets too, and it doesn’t happen all that often. Both the sweater and the scarf shown above are made in their awfully nice 55% lambswool / 45% nylon blend. Quick rundown of the Wool Mac can be found over here. Free shipping kicks in at $50 pre code. Code BLKFRIDAY expires today, 11/28. Meanwhile, if you’re planning on spending more than a hundred bucks, maybe consider picking up one of these PayPal digital giftcards to the GAP brands? $80 gets you $100. Many thanks to Karan for the tip! Code expires today, 11/28/14.
Banana Republic: 50% off one full priced item w/ BRFIFTY
- Tipped Marled Lambswool Blend Cardigan – $75.00 ($150)
- Digby Brogue in Burgundy – $79.00 ($158)
- Mixed Media Gloves – $44.75 ($89.50)
BUT… there are the usual exclusions. Like blazers & suit jackets. And that “BR picks” label, which the outstanding Traveler Jeans are saddled with. Also, the camel coat is all but sold out. Cripes. Son of a gun. If you’re getting more than one thing, you’ll want to use the code BRFORTY, which will get you 50% off that first, full priced item, then 40% off your purchase after that.
Allen Edmonds: Select Items Black Friday Sale
The sale itself isn’t the strongest (it’s select items, and a bunch of odd stuff) but… they brought the Weybridge back? Certainly not everyone’s cup of holiday tea, but they’ve got a bit of a cult following. Still plenty dressed up and suit worthy, but more modern thanks to the punched medallion and sweep, yet no traditional brogue/pinked edges. Meanwhile, if you’re an AMEX cardmember, check your account to see if you have access to a $50 off Allen Edmonds deal. Should run through the end of the year. Hat tip to Brian F. for passing along that one.
Boden: 30% off Everything + Free Shipping & Free Returns w/ 3K3G
Boden usually slaps functioning sleeve buttons on their blazers and jackets, but the free returns means you can just send it back if you don’t want to deal with the headache of tailoring those things. Also, button stance on some of their blazers can drift a little high. Yet $160 for a Moon Mills tweed blazer, especially in that windowpane pattern, will be tempting for some.
Zara: 30% off Sitewide
Well that’s simple enough. A blanket discount. Easy. Prices are as marked. And with Zara, their goods return free, ship for a flat rate of $4.95 under $50, and ship free over $50. It’s a noticeable step above H&M, yet some of the quality can be lacking. On the other hand, some of their stuff can be crazy nice for the price. Promotion expires on Black Friday.
Massimo Dutti: 30% off Sitewide
- Suede Boots – $138.60 ($198)
- Reversible Nubuck Jacket – $406 ($580)
- Quilted Blazer – $138.60 ($198)
Massimo Dutti is to Zara as Banana Republic is to Gap. Same company, but a noticeable step up in quality, and to many, style. Unlike the GAP Inc. brands, Zara and Massimo Dutti aren’t perpetually on sale. Their Black Friday promotion is a nice way to get their goods on discount, without having to wait for the post-holiday markdowns. Like Zara, MD does run slim and trim. So if in doubt, size up. Zara and MD still appear to be doing free shipping and free returns as well.
Jack Spade: Surplus Sale
- Flint Nylon Davis Brief – $139.00 FINAL ($278)
- Elastic Leather Credit Card Holder – $19.00 FINAL ($55)
You’ll probably have to hand over your email address and zip code to gain access to this thing. That’s been the way Jack Spade has run these things for a while. But, once in, there’s a selection of oddly lower priced Jack Spade goods. Like that briefcase shown above. Pretty damn sharp for $139. Final sale though, so, no returns, and they’re now charging $5 to ship inside the U.S.
Ledbury: 35% off All Shirts (30% off sat, 25% off sun)
Looks like they’re running the same deal as last year. That’s actually a pretty big discount for Ledbury, and a lot of us need that kinda number since their shirts are pricey. This is the company with the lowered second button. Fantastic quality, great collars, but know that sleeves can run a little long (and they ding you for a fee to shorten them). Selection during this sale can get decimated, quick, so hop to it if you’re a Ledbury fan.
H&M: Select Black Fri Deals + 20% off $60+ w/ 2728
And the already dirt cheap gets even cheaper. Code 2728 is scheduled to run through Sunday, 11/30.
YOOX: 20% off all orders w/ YOOXGIVING
Yoox is a good example of what too much of a good thing looks like. The amount of inventory they carry is mind boggling. And sizes are usually scattered, real scattered, no matter what you’re looking for. But 20% off is still 20% off (not bad for Yoox) and they carry some real high end designer names, IF you’re into the high end designer thing.
Club Monaco: 20% off $200, 25% off $300, 30% off $500 w/ TGIBF
- Allen Edmonds Cordovan Dundee Chukka – $455 ($650)
- Allen Edmonds Strands in Dark Brown – $273.75 ($365)
- Allen Edmonds Mora 2.0 Monk Strap – $273.75 ($365)
And boom goes the holiday gifts budget. Those cordovan chukkas are lifer boots. High threshold for this Club Monaco code, but if they’re carrying Allen Edmonds, then well… it’ll get there. NOTE: At post time, this is working. This trips the ol’ “too good to be true” trigger, but, it’s working for now?
Indochino: Up to 70% off Select Items w/ BLKFRI
- Charcoal Birdseye Suit – $390 ($649)
- Midnight Chalk Stripe Suit – $330 ($549)
- Essential Grey Herringbone Suit – $315 ($449)
It might be time to do another in-person with Indochino. In the past year or so they’ve upgraded to a true half-canvas construction, and are now offering free shipping and free returns on all orders. Still, with all the measuring, it might not be the ideal way for a beginner to jump into the suit game. But if you know what you like (and what you DON’T like), and aren’t afraid to say “hey, if you chop the tail, I’m gonna send this rocketing back to your returns department, and please lower the button stance by an inch or so”… then proceed. They do still offer the $75 alternations credit if you want to tweak your suit, locally, upon arrival.
Christopher Ward: 15% off everything w/ MEGA15
Christopher Ward doesn’t discount often, so this is one of the rare times of the year that they’ve got a blanket deal going on. The C65 Trident Classic blends some of the sporty details of their flagship dive watch, with a suit worthy strap, case, and indices. Full review over here. Spendy, yes, but spectacular in person. Code expires Midnight on Monday.
EXPRESS: 50% off everything online + Free Shipping No Min.
- Blue Twill Blazer – $99.00 ($198)
- Merino Wool V-Neck Sweaters – $34.95 ($69.90)
- Merino Wool Shawl Collar – $44.00 ($88)
Prices are as marked. No code here, even though Express is usually pretty code happy. Blazers are lined in poly, but they usually fit quite well off the rack. Plenty love the Express Merion Wool V-necks with their mid-weight, smooth merino wool. Black Friday – Cyber Monday is usually, by far, the best sale of the year at Express. You just have to dodge all the loud, logo’d, and just plain weird stuff. Shopping in person at Express on Black Friday is a nightmare. So the free shipping no minimum offer is all the more reason to not leave the couch. Both the half off & free shipping offers expire tonight, 11/28.
JCPenney: Select Doorbusters + 15% off w/ RMN15
- Harris Tweed Sportcoat – $118.99
- Deacon Cognac Wingtip Boot or Gunner Black Cap Toe Boot – $42.49
- Stafford Wool Blend Topcoat – $76.49
- Stafford Camel Hair Sportcoat – $67.99
As always, ignore the “retail” prices that JC Penney lists. But in terms of their Black Friday sale pricing, it seems like JC Penney has bottomed out the prices on most of their goods. For example, the Deacon boot usually goes for $55 – $65. That actually quite nice topcoat will usually run you about a hundred bucks. So it seems like JCP really has taken prices down just an extra bit for this weekend. Free shipping to your place kicks in at $49. Full review on the boots here. Limited sizes on the Deacon.
Orient: Take 45% off w/ BF2014
- Producer Automatic in White or Black – $134.75 ($245)
- Bambino Original or Vintage – $143 ($260)
- Ray Diver Automatic – $162.25 ($195)
- New Sun & Moon Automatic in Black or White – $217.25 ($395)
Big thanks to Jason J. for sending in the tip on this one. 30% off is the standard for Orient, but a few years back they stopped doing anything more than that with any regularity. So 45% off is good. Very good. $135 for the new Producer square case, especially now that they’ve released one in black, is outstanding. Full review here. Code runs through Saturday 11/29.
Billy Reid: Extra 20% off sale styles w/ FRIDAY
Key thing to remember: Sale items at Billy Reid are only up for an exchange or store credit. So, no cash back if you make a purchase with this deal. Quality is absolutely there. Fits are trim (if not more trim than you’d think). Just tread carefully with the stipulations on returns.
Sak’s Off 5th: Extra 40-50% off w/ BLACKOUT & Free Ship. w/ FREESHIP
- Sak’s 5th Ave. BLACK Brown Suede Single Monks – $82.50 ($165)
- Victorinox Infantry Vintage Automatic – $369.99 ($924.99)
- Cole Haan Leather Dopp Kit – $53.99 ($138)
Lots of hunting and pecking on Sak’s off 5th, yet there are some needles to be found in that haystack. Plus, the free shipping code that you can use on top of the other code makes it a little easier to jump on something small. Deal expires on Sunday the 30th.
Bonobos: 25% off $150, 30% off $250 w/ BLACKFRIDAY
Pretty steep thresholds, but if memory serves, Bonobos usually has an extra solid deal on Cyber Monday. Makes sense, being that they were born and bred on the web. So, standby for that.
Macy’s: Select Black Friday Specials online + in store
Macy’s on Black Friday is… a nightmare. Abandon all hope, ye who enter there. And their website is only slightly less chaotic.
Target: 40% off Clothing & Free Shipping No Min.
- Merona Tailored Fit Unconstructed Cotton Blazer – $35.99 ($59.99)
- Mossimo Supply Co Crewneck or V Neck Tees – $5.99 ($9.99)
Target launched their free shipping no min. promotion weeks ago, in order to compete and compete hard during the holiday season. Foot traffic in any given Target, on Black Friday, has to resemble something of a stampede. So, if you can find it online, that means you can steer clear from the in-store experience and not pay extra for shipping.
form•function•form: 25% off w/ lingeringfoodcoma
- Architect’s Wallet – $73.50 ($98)
- Button-Stud Sport ‘ $73.50 ($98)
- Gracilis iPhone Case – $51 – $54 ($68 – $72)
Yes indeed, you read that code right. Damn tryptophan. Good on everything but the Button-Stud Premiums (which, y’know… totally understandable. The numbers get a lot tighter when Rolex + Omega are involved). Code runs through Cyber Monday.
East Dane: 15% off $250+, 20% off $500+, 25% off $1000+ w/ GOBIG14
Those be some pretty high thresholds right there. East Dane is Amazon’s higher end men’s shop. Shipping & returns are free, and if you’ve got Prime, you’ll get East Dane orders in two days like normal Amazon Prime purchases.
Huckberry: “The Dappered Shop”
- Made in the USA “Leather-Back Writer” – $62.98 ($75)
- Made in the USA Brass Grip Fountain Pen – $79.98 ($90)
- Techne Instruments Harrier Dual Time Watch – $199.98 ($235)
Shameless self promotion! Well, listen. When the good folks at Huckberry asked us to do the oh-so-difficult job of “curating” (read: focused window shopping) a holiday gift shop with you guys in mind… it wasn’t tough to say yes. From boots to pens, watches to drool-worthy brief cases, there’s plenty of stylish, well made stuff in there. Give it a spin if you so desire. Many thanks to the guys at Huckberry for the opportunity.
Expect updates throughout the day. Got a tip on an especially good Black Friday deal? Send those in to joe@dappered.com
