A wise man once asked: “What the hell just happened?” And for good reason. There is value in looking back. It gives us all a good gauge as to what is good, and more importantly, what is not good, going forward. Sure, the “clip show” is mostly a cheap (affordable?) device to create new content out of already published stuff. But they’re also a good way to catch up in case you missed something. So cue the flashback music. Here’s the very best from the month that just was…
Best Sale(s): Nordstrom 1/2 Yearly & Allen Edmonds CEO Favorites
At a macro level, Nordstrom’s half-yearly sale takes the cake. The sheer volume of goods, the length and breadth of tastes that their inventory covers, and the fact that they offer free shipping and free returns (no final sale items here fellas) makes the half-yearly a big win. On a micro level, Allen Edmonds putting two of their most popular models (the Strand and Cornwallis) up for $120 off? That was also a big deal. CEO favorites are done, but the Nordy half yearly goes through 6/5. Picks here.
Most Surprising Sale: Brooks Bros. 40% off Suits/Sportcoats (exp.)
This was a full blown “Wait…. what??” moment. No multi-buy requirements. No must be a cardmember rules. Just a flat, 40% off Brooks Brothers suits and sportcoats. And it was for a good span of time too, not just one day like they do around the holidays. Highly unusual, and was thrown out into the internet ether with little to no fanfare. It was strange. Very strange. Good? Yes. But also strange.
Most “Wheelhouse” Dappered Article: Best Dress Shoes Under $200
Whenever I meet someone new, the inevitable question of “what do you do?” comes up. And I hate that question, because explaining Dappered leads to two things: #1. Total and utter confusion/astonishment that a website like this exists, and #2. A look that says “is this jerk now judging me based on my clothes?” To answer #2, no, I’m not. And in regards to #1, I stopped asking the question “why” a while ago, and instead now concentrate on being glad as hell that you guys are out there on the other side of the screen. Anyway… when someone asks me to expand on what we do/cover/write about, a post about dress shoes that are not only good looking but decently made for under $200 is an example I’d give. So, that’s the wheelhouse. And we do it every year.
Best Use of Bigfoot in an Instagram Post: Spring Greens & Blue
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition, and no one ever notices Sasquatch lumbering about in the background. He has made appearances before. He will make appearances again.
Most potentially useful Style Scenarios: Summer Wedding Trio
It is that time of year. Shocking confession: I never learned how to do the electric slide, and now I’m too embarrassed to ask for directions. I’ve always just gone and fetched drinks for the table/my date/myself when that damned song comes on. It’s these darkest of secrets that weighs so heavily on the soul of man.
Most Welcome Return: Orient Polaris Automatic
Thought this thing went the way of the Dodo and uncertainty (how is it that everyone is so sure about everything?), but it’s back. But is it here to stay? Word from the guy’s at Orient’s US base is that there’s not a ton in, and they might not get any more. Which if that’s true, that’s too bad. Because it’s an all time looker in terms of handsome design. Full review here.
Most Functional Article of Clothing: GAP Performance Polos
Gonna get a lot of use now that it’s heating up. Silky, lightweight, and super-breathable. 97% engineered poly and 3% spandex. So springy and flexible too. Think of these things as budget Under Armour polos without the sporty logo. Micro mesh/pique texture that doesn’t stick or feel squishy/bulky like cotton pique polos. Size shown is a medium on 5’10” / 185. Available in solid or stripes. Are they the favorite polo in the closet? No. When it’s friggin’ hotter than blazes will they be the go-to? Absolutely.
Most underrated poll candidate: Turtles
Never underestimate turtles. A lot of people like turtles!
Best looking, lightweight layer for the summer: J. Crew Shawl Collar
Perfect for a weekend away when you want to pack just one, versatile layer for when the sun goes down. J. Crew really has been nailing it on the lightweight sweater front as of late. Currently on sale for 30% off.
Best Use of Burgundy: Gustin’s Horween #8 Weekender
Good heavens that’s a lot of great looking leather. Got funded so quickly during the first run that Gustin brought back this color (and only this color) for another campaign. Half a grand+ is no small asking price, but honestly… with this much Horween leather, you’d think the asking price would have been a bit more (but don’t get any smart ideas Gustin…) Too pricey for your budget? Understood. I hear you. More weekenders, some starting under $100, can be found here.
Dopiest looking photo shoot: TIE = Ninja Kicks & Wearing 5 Neckties
At least the neckties could be done in private (also, hard not to think of this, then this, when wearing multiple ties at once). Crane-kicking for photos to demonstrate the flexibility of super-stretch jeans on the other hand… I mean, what would you think if you saw some jackass doing that while walking down the street?
Best Life Advice: Don’t be the Guy in the movie theater bathroom
There’s a whole big wide world out there that doesn’t give a damn about your mop.
