Ask A Woman: What colors to wear on New Year’s Eve?…

Beth:

I know this is a tad late, but here is my simple but mind boggling question: For New Year’s Eve do I go with traditional black/white/grey colors or bright colors?  I will be at a moderate scale bar (not too fancy but not t-shirt either).  Traditional or Peacock?

Hi Chris,

Last minute planning has so many bad outcomes–flunking a final, picking your mother’s Christmas present from a clearance rack, wearing blue polyester to your own wedding.  When will you learn?  Well, not today…because when you write into Ask A Woman with such a timely question, we will reward your sloth!

New Year’s Eve out on the town is for tradition–champagne, confetti, Auld Lang Syne, puking in your boyfriend’s new NFL trash can that he got for Christmas, etc.  It also takes place in the middle of winter.  For both of these reasons, I favor dark or neutral colors (black, gray, white, navy blue, dark brown) in classic lines, cuts, and fabrics.  If you want a splash of color or a nod to trends, no problem, as long as it’s in a detail of your ensemble, not the base of your ensemble.

Place a bold red tie against your dress shirt; wear a patterned button-down under a classic sweater; pair wild cufflinks or risky wingtips with an otherwise reserved outfit.

Think Frank Sinatra as your foundation, LCD Soundsystem as your accent.  NYE is not the night for man-leggings or the rainbow-colored hat you bought in Guatemala.

Happy New Year’s to all, and remember that having a designated driver never goes out of style.  (Could I be any cornier?  No.  Could I be any more sincere?  No.)  See you in the New Year!

Need a few basic outfit ideas that you could easily add a small amount of bright color to?  Try any of these three from the holiday party series:  Dressed up, somewhat dressy, and casual.
