Looks = drool. Price = tears. Filson Cover Cloth Umbrella – $95.00 – $98.00

Available direct through Filson, Park&Bond if you have some GILT credits, or Brooks Brothers.

Two things:

1. That is one undeniably cool looking umbrella
2. Almost one hundred dollars for an umbrella? This thing know any tricks?

Instead of nylon for the canopy, Filson uses their oil finished cotton in “otter green” to keep the rain off your head. The light wooden handle with the embossed Filson logo is just friggin’ fantastic.

But ninety five bucks? The Totes “gentleman’s” umbrella goes for $20ish online, and if you can find one in-store at Macy’s they’ll sometimes go for much less. That one has yet to let a humble dappered.com editor down over four years of use. But back to the Filson model…

Joe, I’ve owned two umbrellas that cost over $60 (it rains perpetually in the UK) and both have stood the test of time. However, the problem with these umbrellas is that they take up quite a lot of space. Where does the 3″ long, dripping wet umbrella go when you are in a cafe, supermarket, office, and etc.? I’ve taken to carrying around a briefcase Fulton umbrella. They’re around a quarter of the price and durability of a Filson.

Even though we don’t have the weather for it here in Texas, I like good umbrellas. The most expensive I’ve ever owned was $35 for an indestructible Sharper Image – one of the few things they ever got really right. I went through three because I kept losing them, and now I can’t find them anymore. I’m now on the hunt for another replacement.

Considering the lifespan of the average Johdus umbrella is 3.7 weeks before it is lost, I can never justify spending more than a minimum for these contraptions.

Exactly. I always have that problem with bigger umbrellas. Riding the train it gets in the way, then at the office – where to put it? A pain to carry. That said, it does look killer.

Get yourself a good Columbia/REI/insert big high end name outdoors wear maker name here, RAIN JACKET and your all set. My colombia rain jacket is breathable and packs in on itself into a pouch. ~$100. That umbrella is best saved for looking dapper on Thanksgiving when it should per chance, rain…

Same here – it doesn’t rain enough for me to justify spending that type of money on an umbrella. I only have a 20 foot dash to my car, so I don’t really need one. If it’s raining when I’m walking the dog, I’ll just use my oversized golf umbrella. It does the trick.
But that is a handsome umbrella though. I’d use that umbrella more often than I should if somebody gave it to me as a present. Wouldn’t buy it though.

I stay cheap on the umbrellas because ultimately it will get left in a coat check somewhere. Put that cash toward a nice raincoat instead, it won’t pay for the whole jacket, but a sizable chunk.

My experience with umbrellas in the past was that I always bought small, and inexpensive ones because I had always been prone to forget it on the Metro or somewhere else (plus the lifespan was always short anyway). I then found a nice umbrella by Leighton with a wooden, curved handle (which is essential because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hooked the thing over my wrist because I needed both hands) for $40. That was at least 18 months ago, and I still have it. It was just this automatic mental alarm where I realized I paid $40 for the thing, so I sure as hell won’t forget it somewhere. I actually went one step further and bought a second one. Now I have one at home, and one at the office so I’m prepared for anything. I would have easily spent well over $40 in the last year and a half constantly replacing cheap ones that I left somewhere or that completely fell apart because of wind gusts north of 20 mph.

I would pass when for another $25 you can get the unbreakable umbrella that the Phillipine secret service invented and carries. It works as a concealed weapon, umbrella, and you can use it to split open watermellons Gallager-style. This is steep, but I, too, am a devotee of the hook handle. I find it very useful to hang from my shoulder bag on the subway.

Being a native of the Pacific Northwest, born and raised, I’m culturally unable to use an umbrella. Can’t even bring myself to open one up.

I rarely have cause to beat the crap out of someone with my umbrella, but I like the idea of this anyway. Finally watermelons will respect me.

I can’t bring myself to drop real cash (like more than 30 bucks) on an umbrella because it’s the number one item I lose constantly.

I bought the Totes “Gentleman’s Umbrella” from a Totes store for $10. I keep it in my trunk for when needed. Excellent investment. If I ever needed another, I’d buy this again immediately.

If I’m going to spend that much on an umbrella, it damn well better have a wind vent (which this one doesn’t). Walking through New York on a rainy day one time the wind repeatedly turned my umbrella inside out, eventually snapping several of the support branches. I discarded it as I entered the subway, into a bin full of discarded, broken umbrellas.

When i lived in Chicago i tried out just about every umbrella around and the full size gustbuster brand was the best i came across. Never failed once. It looks good and cost about $40.
