AE runs two big sales every year. First is their Anniversary Sale in the spring, and this second one is their Rediscover America sale. It’s during these big events that their “icons” shoes actually go on significant sale. It’s not every day one can save serious money on a pair of Parks or Strands. So yes, while AE will run the occasional sale, this big one and the other big one in the Spring are the real deals. Below is our top 10 rankings picked and placed by way of a combination of factors like value, versatility, discount, and style.
#1. Fifth Avenue Oxfords w/ Dainite Rubber Soles – $289 ($475)
Timeless style and crafted in Port Washington Wisconsin. As we head into fall and winter, making the switch from leather soled dress shoes to something with a bit of traction is the way to go. The Dainite sole is largely un-noticeable. It’s not some big toothy, lug sole. Not at all. They look just fine with a suit. Perfect even. If you don’t think the Dainite sole is necessary, then the standard leather sole version is also on sale for $20 less ($269).
#2. Ridgley Chukka Boots – $429 ($525)
A new model. Dead simple, rugged and refined. Available in either dark brown, black, or a rich cinnamon suede. B, D, E, and EEE widths, which is a huge plus for those of us who aren’t a standard “D” width. Handcrafted in Port Washington Wisconsin. Goodyear welted to “Extralight injection molded outsoles” which promise lightweight flexibility. Somebody get Santa on the horn. It’s early, but these are at the top of the ol’ list this year.
#3. Rhett Cap-toe Oxfords – $379 ($475)
“New style who this?” The Park Avenue has been the King of the Allen Edmonds lineup forever. Could this new model, The Rhett, be an usurper? Check out that side sweep. And the suede option. Another one of the new models Goodyear welted to what they’re describing as light & flexible extralight injection molded outsoles. Built on the 2014 last, which is a modified version of their bestselling 65 last (Parks/Strands), and has “a refined toe profile, enhanced heel fit and increased arch support.”
#4. Park Avenue Leather Sole Oxfords – $349 ($450)
Speaking of the King.
$101 off for Park Avenues doesn’t happen every day. Full review here. The bedrock of the Allen Edmonds business. Doesn’t get more timeless and handsome than that. They DO make the Park Avenue with a Dainite Rubber sole, but for some reason they’ve limited the color selection on the Dainite sole version to just Black, Walnut, Dark Chili, and Coffee. Shown above in the darker brown leaning mahogany.
#5. Richards Double Monks – $379 ($475)
Return of the Mac Monks. Monk straps fell out of favor there for a few years because they just got… weird. Too pointy. Too much flash. These are a return to restraint, but they’re still double monks. So they’re interesting. Should look great with a suit, and should also look good with dark wash jeans and a tweedy sportcoat. Dark brown or black. Another new style Goodyear welted to those Extralight injection molded outsoles
#6. Higgins Mill Weatherproof Boot – $449 ($550)
Boot season is here. Spendy, but the Higgins Mill does it all. They’re simple, handsome, and have Dainite rubber soles. The weatherproof leather uppers are a feature that competing, heritage workwear/field-style boots rarely if ever match. Available in five colors, including a Burgundy Chromexcel with a bit of texture. Chili is shown above. Full review here.
#7. Carlyle Plain-Toe Oxfords – $349 ($450) now in burgundy
*New Color Alert.* For the longest time the Carlyle was only available in black, walnut, or dark chili. These take it one step darker than the chili. Modern in their minimalism, classy in their quiet style. That’s the Carlyle. Hard not to love. Full review here.
#8. Strand Oxfords – $349 ($450)
The Strand is the legendary, bit-of-flash dress shoe from Allen Edmonds. They’re often excluded from other sales, but the Rediscover America sale (and the Anniversary sale in the Spring) is usually when you can get them for a good chunk off list price. Nice to see that’s holding true again this year. $101 off. Available in Walnut (shown), Mahogany (in person review here), Black, or Dark Chili.
#9. Liverpool Chelsea Boots – $349.98 ($550)
Polo suede or dark espresso leather. Sleek but not Elf-ish/pointy. Dead simple design. Comfortable. Also made in Dark Chili and Black, but those are $449.
#10. Made in Italy Merino Blend Dress Socks – $18 ($24)
Made in Italy. Temperature regulating merino wool blend. Appears to be a mid-calf height? Not over the calf. You’d think they’d say so if they were. 65% merino wool, 33% nylon, 2% lycra.
BONUS Combination Cedar Shoe Trees – $22.50 ($30)
Gonna need those if you pick up a new pair of shoes or boots during this sale. Made in Wisconsin. Won’t ship for free on their own since standard free shipping doesn’t kick in until $100 these days.
