In Review: The GAP Cotton/Nylon Mac

GAP Cotton/Nylon Mac Jacket – $89.60 w/ DEAL ($128.00)

Note: Code above appears to be one of those “select customer” codes, so you might get 25% off, 30% off (price reflected above) or 35% off. Also, this particular item might hold the record for shorest time from introduction peak saturation on Dappered. This is the third time it’s been mentioned in as many days. Sorry ’bout that.

As minimalist as it gets. In terms of both it’s design, and it’s construction.

And for plenty, that’s gonna be good.

If a trench is like a Katy Perry Half Time performance*, with all its doo-dads and flashy visuals like epaulets, a belt, & cuff buckles, then a mac is like a marching band… without the marching.

Size shown: Medium. Runs true to size. Barely lined.

Single breasted, plain shoulders, regular collar. That’s it, that’s the list. And GAP, to their credit, sticks to that formula here.

The fabric is a 63% cotton / 37% nylon blend that repels water well. Almost has a waxed or coated feeling to it, but doesn’t appear to have any sort of extra finish put on it. It’s also barely lined in cotton chambray. The sleeves aren’t even lined. No insulation of any sort either. This thing is not warm. BUT… it is lightweight, and would be a perfect 3-season coat to travel with. Layer up underneath if it’s under 40 and you should be fine.

One drawback, it does wrinkle. Especially if the sales associate smushes it into a bag** post purchase.

The arm holes are wide enough that it’s easy to slip over a suit jacket or blazer (a medium did just fine over the 40R J. Crew Crosby seen above). And that’s key. Outerwear with high armholes and tight fits might look good in catalogs, but they’re close to useless if you have to fight like hell to get them over a blazer or sport coat.

It’s pretty much a straight cut from armpits to hem, but it doesn’t poof out at the sides either. Collar stays up when stood up, so it’ll keep the wind off your neck. Center vent, and the length is about mid-thigh. Not quite to the knee, but covers a suit jacket easily.

So simple that it might not catch many eyes hanging on the racks, but in a retail world where so many items try way too hard, the simplicity here is refreshing. And if you’re the type who carries himself with some quiet confidence, a smart looking coat like this will only accentuate that quality.

*There’s a double-breasted joke here that can be left unmade.
**A Baby Gap bag no less. Musta run out of the reg. Gap bags. But at least I now know this coat was “made with love“!!!!:)AWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
