Club Monaco Suits, Bonobos Sale, & More | Thursday Handful

April 25, 2013 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier.  Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look.  Those are what make up these handfuls.  Expect these things when necessary.  Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below.  Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

Club Monaco: Extra 30% off Sale items w/ SPRING30

Tropical wool, and canvas pants.
Tropical wool and canvas pants.

The Picks: Grant Suit Jacket + Pant – $299.60 ($620), Five-Pocket Canvas Trouser – $34.30 ($79.50), Striped Crew in navy/red stripe – $41.30 ($79.50)

Anyone have direct experience with Club Monaco suiting? Fused? Half-canvas? Jackets look a little on the short side… but for $300, it’s an Italian tropical-wool that appears to have a bit of marl to the fabric. Available in grey or navy. Sleeve buttons do appear to be functional. Five-pocket canvas trousers come in other colors, and while sizes are scattered… well, grey jeans! Shipping is free on these.  You’re on the hook for return shipping to the tune of $5.

Lands’ End / L.E.C.: 25% off everything + free shipping @ $50 w/ HAPPY & 1610

Contrast collars and welted bucks.
Contrast collars and welted bucks.

The Picks: Contrast Collar OCBD – $33.00 ($45), Archer Suede Welted Bucks – $89.25 ($119)… and also available in navy for the same price over here.

Few exclusions on this one (Allen Edmonds, Oak Street Bootmakers).  And with the ongoing self destruction of the jcp brand, the LEC OCBD now becomes tempting.  Gonna miss those jcp OCBDs.  Anyway, nice change of pace with the collar on the Lands’ End Canvas option.  Looks like the blue shirt has stripes on the collar.  For the suede bucks, they don’t look as trim as the welted options from J. Crew, but they’re much more affordable.

Macy’s: 25% off Friends & Family sale w/ code FRIEND

Dependable, workable... one hundred fifty bucks.
Dependable, workable… one hundred fifty bucks.

The Pick: Kenneth Cole Pincord Suit Separates – $149.99 total

CHEAP.  But totally workable by your tailor.  Kenneth Cole suiting is usually trim, but not super skinny.  Lots of sizes, a cotton/linen/rayon blend, and a safe for summer light grey.  Also worth a look, the Bar III blazer and Bulova automatic from yesterday’s style scenario.

Bonobos: New Items Added to Sale

No extra 30 off code yet.
Used to cost your first born.  Now, just a kidney will do.

The Picks: Cashmere V-Necks in Grey, Green, or Navy – $128.00 ($238).  Trafalgar Squares Checked Shirt – $58 ($78), Guernsey Clipper Crew – $48.00 ($78)

Yo moneybags.  Cashmere… on sale.  Plenty of us are just fine with humble merino, but if an extra 30% off code pops up, well, that’d still be ninety bucks for a sweater.  Get ready to search by your size.

Amazon:  20% off select clothes $100+ w/ APR20PCT | Same for shoes of $100+ w/ 20SHOE13

We might have something here...
We might have something here…

The Picks: Joseph Abboud Soft Construction Sport Coat – $138.60 ($495), Joseph Abboud Super 120’s Navy Blazer – $159.98 ($495),  Two Woolrich Moccasin Run Crews – $87.20,

Hat tip to Ryan N. for sending this one in via style tip. The shoe selection is pretty much a bust (no Allen Edmonds, very limited brands, etc…) but there’s potential on the apparel side with that APR20PCT code. Amazon has struggled making a dent here on Dappered when it comes to clothes.  They get slaughtered every year in Store Wars because of it.  The selection is almost overwhelming, and not all of the brands are worthwhile.  So, be ready to search.  Lots of Hilfiger, Penguin, etc…

The real steals might (might) be with the Joseph Abboud stuff.  Much of it is made in the USA, and their “soft construction” sport coats might be outstanding.  I have something that sounds like it’d be similar in my own closet, and it has little to no construction to it.  It’s like a wool version of the ol’ INC ultra lights. Stand by for an in person with this soon.  Code for the clothes expires 5/1/13.  Returns are free as long as you’re ordering from Amazon, which you have to do anyway in order to use the code.

Also worth a mention: J. Crew is now doing free shipping + 25% off almost everything (suiting & 3rd party are excluded) with the code SPRINGBESTFB. Original picks are here. There’s new arrivals at J. Crew too, including… wait, what is going on here? Ralph Lauren has launched a sorta secret “Private Sale” that isn’t visible on their main site. Through 5/1 they’re also taking an extra 15% off at checkout  Allen Edmonds is still taking an extra 15% off their clearance styles. Banana Republic is 35% off through 4/27 with BR35TREAT, but the normal exclusions (suit jackets/blazers) are there. Meanwhile, even though the code won’t apply, B.R. has dropped the price on a few of their tailored fit blazers, and there’s a good amount of other items marked down.

Regarding the Amazon sale: it also applies to most athletic socks, which is great if you’re a runner/CrossFitter/etc who likes compression or other specialty socks.

Thinking about that Joseph Abboud navy blazer. I’d probably switch the buttons for some gray MoP or brushed pewter ones, but still. Made in USA navy blazer for $160? Winning.

What would one wear with the canvas trouser? Is it like a chino? Between jeans and a chino?

Club Monaco Suiting, for what it’s worth:

A couple points of feedback from a suit I purchased and then returned the jacket. Notice in the photo how the bottom of the suit ‘pulls’ away from itself. The button stance seems high and then it’s cut sorta like an old Charlie Chaplin jacket…sorta smallish with this pull. Forgive me if that doesnt make sense…not sure of the proper terminology here. The picture tells the story. As to the other concerns, I’m not sure. It just didnt look good on me but I’m sure on a slimmer dude it would be cool.

The pants I loved. A little ‘roomier’ than typical suit pants yet still tapered…very comfortable! I will buy a couple more pairs today with the sale. ‘Wright’ fit.

Returns are free if you return to a store.

I got that Kenneth Cole suit at a Burlington Coat Factory at the end of last summer. It’s fully lined, which makes it run hot, and it’s a bit stiff, but otherwise I really like it. But also take a look at the Lands End pin cord suit — sizes are limited, but it’s unlined and the fabric may be nicer. Here’s the jacket: http://www.landsend.com/pp/StylePage-411753_WD.html?amp;CM_MERCH=REC-_-LIPP-_-GGT-_-2-_-411753-_-416108

I also tried on just the jacket and it fit me dead on as most of Club Monaco’s clothes do. Joe you’re right it is a bit on the shorter side. It’s like Club Monaco took my skinny boy and said make clothes to fit this guys body haha

Hey guys I’d check out that Banana Republic up to 50% off sale a little more. You can stack it with the 35% off BR35TREAT code and I bought a couple polo’s for as low as $16!

im looking to start replacing my buttons on some of my jackets, too. wheres a good place to get a nice set of MoP or nice tortoise shell buttons?

I got that blazer a year ago, it fits kind of wonky [i think the reviews mentioned this], and i tried to have my tailor salvage it and it came out so-so. i think i ended up getting it for $18, so its pretty low risk, but its a bit thicker than i would have liked for a summer blazer. but hey if youve got a sears nearby, its worth a shot

Yeah, I purchased this, a year ago… or more. If you workout at all, good luck fitting into the sleeves. I had to return it. I loved the look and style though.

    Joe,

I have the Club Monaco suit (Grant fit) in both gray and blue colors.
I got the blue one last week. Color is a VERY dark navy. Jacket has functional buttons and, as you rightly said, is on the short side. Regarding the construction, I did the pinching test and seems like it is half canvassed. The fabric is also very nice.

And congrats on the new banner!

  20. Ryan N says

It definitely fits wonky. Arms too long (with functional cuffs), stance slightly too high, tight shoulders. Still need to return mine.

Lands End has a new 40% off code for full price items. Brings those bucks down to $71.40.

Promotion Code BRIGHT and Pin 4520

    Expires 5/1

Surprisingly, Amazon has some really nice-quality ones for pretty cheap. I bought a ton from a seller in Asia for about $3.00. The hardest part about the whole thing is forcing myself to sit in front of the tv and actually switch out the buttons. Oh well, at least it’s less painful with season 2 of the Simpsons on.
