The INC Ultra Light Blazer – Version II and III

Macy’s INC Ultra Light Blazer – $41.20 SHIPPED w/ code MACYSFF (reg. $59.00)

$22.49 UPDATE: $30.74 post code and pre-shipping.  (They just raised the price.)  Code expires Monday 5/2/2011  Credit to Marcus for sending in the style tip about the striped unlined blazers that are now available online.

Bad shoulder pads and lining with poor movement are often the downfall of inexpensive blazers.  The Macy’s house brand INC might have stumbled across a solution.  Strip the blazer of those troublesome shoulder pads and deconstruct it down to just over shirt-weight, and there’s less to screw up.

Plus they’re cheaper.  By quite a bit.

Their wrinkled gingham was the first version of these ultra-lights to break out of the gates, and it was popular enough that it’s still tough to find online.  A few more patterns in this same actual trim fit have now worked their way into Macy’s and onto Macys.com, and when combined with the Friends and Family code MACYSFF these sportcoats drop to $30 a piece pre-shipping.

The new ones aren’t wrinkled like the gingham, the fabric feels a touch more substantial, and they’re still pure, unstructured, featherweight sport coats.  Selection is limited online to just black or grey stripe versions, but in-store you might stumble across a Glen plaid or navy stripe.  Look for the tags that have the original price of $59.00.  Those should be them.

A Warning:  Some Macy’s are just fine with price matching Macys.com if you can show them the price from the web, but others just won’t.

The code MACYSFF is good for 25% off site wide with some exclusions.
.

Same lapel width, button stance, and fit.

Too bad the glen plaid isn’t available online. I’ve been hunting for a slim-fitting glen plaid sport coat for ages.

As far as I can tell there is no tall size available. Any idea how this would fit someone over six feet in hight? I’m somewhere between 6:1 and 6:2. I’ve had luck wearing the gap blazers in just a plain size large with sleeves just barely long enough.

Great call out. But help me out a little – how do you get this “when combined with the Friends and Family code MACYSFF these sportcoats drop to under $30 a piece” or even “$22.49 post code and pre-shipping”? My online says $40.99 and then with the code, it would drop to $30.75 pre-shipping. Am I not applying another code or something?

Nope, you’re right. They must have just raised the prices a bit. Trying to figure out when Macy’s lowers and raises prices must require a doctorate in Black Magic. Updated. Thanks for that Mike.

I’m not sure if it’s the same one you’re referring to, but I found a slim-fit INC glen-plaid blazer at my local Macy’s last night for around $40. It fit well enough but it was about 70% polyester. Thinking back on it, I believe the one I saw was lined, whereas the picture you show of the glen-plaid seems to be mostly unlined. Do you recall the fabric composition of the one you found?

Looking at the tags now. These are all 100% cotton, and 100% unlined.

Same here. I’ve been searching for at least a few years now. Between my difficult to find size (35s/36s), the difficulty in finding a good slim fitting blazer and the seeming rarity of glen-plaid … well, let’s just say I’m not holding my breath.

I don’t believe they distinguish between lengths. I’m about 5’8” and the INC blazers in size small are just about the right length on me. I’m not sure how much the length varies between sm/med/large, though.

I’m 6’2″ and ordered a large in the gingham blazer posted the first time around. Fits me perfectly, IMO. The sleeve of the blazer hits at about my wrist bone while at rest. Hope this helps.

Oh, and I just ordered the black stripe one. Nicely done, Joe!

Woohoo! Great find Joe! Something to add to my to do list for this weekend!

If anybody finds a glen plaid in size small (the unlined cotton one) and is willing to proxy I’d be more than happy to pay the cost plus shipping along with a small finders fee. I checked my local Macy’s but no luck.

  12. Jed says

    April 30, 2011 at 12:29 AM

This really seems to be exactly what I’ve been looking for. If only I could find one of those around here. I’ve called both Macy’s within 30 minutes of me and neither one had anything other than the black or gray stripe.

    Darn.

I just picked up the glen plaid. Had to size up to a large. Speaking of which. I read that some people are having a hard time finding this one in other sizes…well, the reason might be they sent them to Sunnyvale, Ca…because they’re falling off the rack.

Anyway, after a bit of banter with the sales rep, I got the online price and the F&F discount. All told about $33.

I know I said I had a hangup on the wrinkled INC…so I’m glad they did a non-wrinkled one (shame its not the micro-gingham).

So, I’ve decided to go back on my word and have this one tailored. Joe’s right, for the price, why not? My Tailor’s just going to have to look at it as less work to do (no lining) rather than a crappy jacket.

If you’re willing to do all that. Get your local macys to ship it. Find a savvy salesman (or woman) and ask them to locate it in another store. Yes, not only can they do this, but they can print out a receipt and tell you how many that store has in stock in that size.

    That’s how I found my Timberland side-zips.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely give this a shot.

I just picked this up at Macy’s in-store. They price-matched their website (40.99) *and* gave me a 25% off friends-and-family discount for a total of 30.74 pretax.

I live in Texas, so this blazer will be getting a lot of use this summer…

I’ve been going through a few different stores, trying to find a decent summer-weight blazer. I’ve got one from H&M but it’s got pinstripes (yes, pinstripes on linen) which makes it a little less versatile than it could be. Tried on the linen blend blazer at Old Navy – too boxy. The tan cotton blazer from Gap – sleeves way too long. Cotton blazer from Express – sleeves slightly too long, and just doesn’t seem worth the money.

Finally I headed to Macy’s and checked out a few INC blazers… I ended up walking away with the navy pinstripe blazer mentioned here, as well as a fully-lined off-white linen blazer, for about $100 total (including tax). I’m 5’9″, 140 lbs and pretty slender up top, and the INC small is a better fit for me than most 36s. Now if only they would start making 100% wool blazers rather than that poly crap….

Agreed. I talked to one of the salespeople in the menswear section and he gave me attitude when he looked up the item. He said something about how it was only a “60 dollar coat’ and wouldn’t be in his section. I told him I preferred the $60 cotton sports coat to the ones he was offering for $200-300 (which were about 70% polyester).

My Macy’s is having trouble locating the glen plaid blazer in other stores without the UPC code. Does anyone still have the tags with the UPC code attached?

Got the gray and black stripe. Shirt suggestions? Kind having a bit of trouble deciding what to wear them with. Jeans and a ….. shirt. Fill in the blank, please. Open to any suggestions.

  23. Jed says

    May 4, 2011 at 5:32 PM

A button-up shirt would be fine. With the pretty neutral setting of jeans & black/grey blazer you could really pull off most colors. Solid would be best as to not overwhelm in combination with the stripes on the blazer.

I’ve never been a fan of t-shirt under a blazer but I’ve seen some people pull it off w/ dark jeans. If this is your thing be sure to keep the shirt fitted and plain (no obnoxious graphics.)

Thanks. Wore the black stripe w/ a white button down today.
Anything other than solid would definitely be too much.
When the Mrs. saw them in the box her first comment was “You bought a zoot suit?”.
So, yeah, the stripes are much more prominent in person the pics on the Macy’s site would lead you to believe.
    Really like them, personally.

It seems to be off the Macy’s site at the moment? Not out of stock, the product doesn’t exist on macys.com
