The Ultra Light Ultra Cheap Summer Blazer

April 13, 2011 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

INC International Concepts Wrinkled Cotton Gingham Blazer – $23.99 (reg. $60)

Was $29.99, now an extra 20% off on top of the sale.  Totals $33 – $35 shipped.  No code needed.  Credit to Simeon in the comments for noticing the extra 20% off select men’s purchase sale.  Thanks to Akshay for the style tip.

There’s light, there’s deconstructed, and then there’s ultra-thin.  This is the last one.  It’s Calista Flockhart thin.  Barely there.  It’s more shirt than sport-coat.  If the number of words in your standard Dappered review/feature were based on the amount of weight to the garment, this one would go something like this:

It’s shockingly nice.

And that’d be it.  But bear with me for a few more sentences.  The local brick and mortar Macy’s didn’t have it, so I got it off the web.  When it showed up and I pulled it out of the box, the first words out of my mouth were: “What the hell is this?”  There’s really nothing too it, and I thought there was no way it was going to look good.

Then I put it on.  Armholes are good and high.  Fit is nice and trim, but still airy for summer.  Micro gingham pattern looks great with jeans, and it’ll look good with chinos too.  The online description reads: “Cotton/nylon/polyester.”  That’s wrong.  Tag says 100% cotton and it certainly feels and breathes like it too.

Not everyone will love the second-shirt weight of this sport coat.  But many will.  I’m one of them.

See the pattern up close here.  Also, proof that the inside has little to no construction.

    To make this more awesome?

There is an extra 20% off for “select” menswear. This is included and the final price comes to 33.79 shipped. Unbeatable.

From the photo that actually looks like it has a pretty good fit. That without any extra tailoring?

Looks great and is a great option for Miami summer weather. Its already starting to feel too hot to wear clothing, period, but this is a great lightweight option. PS. I like the use of the lightbox (or alternative) for the photos!

Does anyone know the chest measurement for S or M?

  7. Rich says

    April 13, 2011 at 1:28 PM

    Ditto for sleeve measurements.

Doubt this will work for a tall slim guy, but would pick it up in a second if it did.

Yep, that’s a Medium. I’m between a 38-40. 5’9″-10″, 165-170. Fits me pretty close to perfect. Maybe a touch loose off the rack, but, that’s great for this kind of material.

I’m showing 25″ from shoulder seam to end of the sleeve on a medium.

  15. Bryan says

Boo they don’t have size small. I like this blazer a lot, but I don’t think medium would fit me well.

  16. Lance F. says

    April 13, 2011 at 4:06 PM

I’ll be checking my brick and mortor to see if they have this. Seems like the right blazer for a hot and humid New Orleans.

  17. destroyideas says

When it gets over 115 here, I think a light weight sports coat would be great. But that button looks extremely high. Like, middle of the chest high. What’s up with that?

  18. AJ says

For 33 bucks, I couldnt pass it up…good find Joe…should arrive in a week and will be put to good use

They must have run out due to traffic then; I was able to put in an order this morning for a small.

I missed my opportunity. Medium is sold out now. The power of Dappered.

  21. Joe says

    April 13, 2011 at 4:59 PM

I can vouch for the fact that that’s not the middle of my chest. Button stance seems great to me.

Damnitt, my fellow Dappernites have beat me to the punch, no more M left…ugh, and i saw it this morning…

  24. Andrew B says

    April 13, 2011 at 6:36 PM

Ok, 6 ft tall skinny bitch here, 140 lb, 36 in chest, and the small fits me perfectly. This blazer is labeled “slim fit” and it definitely is. Very well fitting, and contoured on the sides.
Here’s the kicker– even though the smaller sizes are sold out online, go to your local store and if they have the blazer politely ask a sales associate to look it up online and match the sale price for you. The lady in my store was very nice and took lots of time helping me out to get the online sale price in store.

  25. Andrew B says

    April 13, 2011 at 6:45 PM

Just tried it on again, and it’s not quite as tight as I make it out to be, you could fit another inch and a half of chest size into a small without it looking silly.

I have the S and I fall usually between a 35-36 chest size. It feels like a 36.

I’m glad you liked it, Joe!

By the way, you might still be able to find these in the Macy’s B&M stores. I picked up this one online, but they had a blue seersucker stripe version that I picked up at my mall.

There’s plenty of smalls and medium of this jacket at the valley fair mall if you’re in santa clara. The only thing is, at the store it’s full price so be ready to show proof of the jacket on the Macys.com website if u want it for $29.99 (good luck asking for the extra 20%). Also, everyone should know that it has the word WRINKLED in the description. That means, you’ll have to be ok that you’re probably not supposed to iron it, even if it feels like it needs it.

  34. Glen says

    April 14, 2011 at 6:56 AM

Thanks for the update. I actually saw this last night and didn’t bother trying it on. Wasn’t worth it to me for full price. But, if they do indeed price match online, I might give it another look tomorrow.

  35. Steven Casado says

    April 14, 2011 at 7:05 AM

Shoot. I want one of these so bad! …but alas, no smalls left. Why didn’t I check the site this morning? Never again, lol. I’m going to roll out of bed and flip on the computer from now on.

So, I bought this for $32 and I took it home and tried it against a few shirts, while I can see its potential, I noticed that I’m going to have to get the arms altered by my tailor, which is pretty much the cost of the jacket itself.

So, for now, its sitting in my closet with the receipt in the pocket until I come to a decision. I may return it in favor of something like this for the summer:

    http://m.us.allsaints.com/product/?page=1&category_id=501&prod_desc_id=0885324312776&position=0

I also can just imagine the look on my tailor’s face if i bring this to him. It’ll probably be alog the lines of: “What the @&$# is this?”

Was so digging this jacket, I stopped by my local Macy’s to see if they had them. The good news: they did! In my size, no less. The bad news? The material looked and felt every-bit of something you’d expect to buy for $25 at Target/Walmart. Was so disappointed.

  38. Joe says

    April 14, 2011 at 4:37 PM

Sorry to hear that you were disappointed. I too had the same sort of reaction when I first pulled it out of the shipping box (that, what in the world? kinda reaction). But after I put it on? It’s honestly one of my favorite new articles of clothing. I don’t think it looks or feels cheap. It’s just thin and extremely, EXTREMELY light. Some will love it, some won’t. I think it’s like eating a veggie burger. If you go into it expecting it to be like a hamburger, you’ll hate it. If you expect this thing to be like a standard chino blazer, you’ll be disappointed. My two cents.

  39. Anonymous says

    April 14, 2011 at 5:10 PM

I’m still on the fence myself when I got this thing home too. But for me, its more about if it is worth the alteration. That’s where I agree with butch, but I did try it on against one of my 1MX shirts, and you’re right, Joe. I can see this being nice when the weather over here finally gets past 80.

  40. MaxMan says

    April 15, 2011 at 11:20 AM

I was liking this thing so much that I had to go to the BM and grab one up immediately. So I walked into the store and saw it and thought to my self “is this it”. Not thinking much of it at first. After I tried it on, I changed my mind, this thing is fresh and so worth it. It’s not cheap material, I think the weight and the wrinkledness gives that feel. When my fashion forward wife likes it, you know it’s a keePer.

I was in such a good mood I went to my local LEC store and grabbed a Harrington Jacket for 27 dollars. Saleswoman said for some reason these jackets have been sent to clearance a week after they came in.

  41. MaxMan says

    April 15, 2011 at 11:26 AM

Btw Joe, we have almost identical dimensions. 5’10, 168lbs, and larger than average thighs. I’m curious what sizes do you generally fit into? I’m a medium, 38/40 jacket, 32×32 pant, 15 34/35 dress shirt, and 10.5 11 shoe. This goes for anyone else in this same range?

  42. Joe says

    April 15, 2011 at 4:57 PM

Yep, that’s about dead on. My dress shirt measurements are more 15.5 – 16, leaning towards 32/33 (33 is perfect). Thicker neck/shorter arms I guess. But yeah, you and I are cut from the same cloth. Or, the cloth of our clothes would be cut almost the same.

  43. Lance F. says

    April 16, 2011 at 1:38 PM

I was able to find the last small at one of my local B&M’s. I liked the thin construction so much I also got the Weiler Sportcoat as well. It’s just as thin but a little more structured..if that makes sense. It’s a nice light gray stripe.

  44. Ryan N. says

    April 21, 2011 at 2:40 PM

Missed out on the sale – went to the local B&M and they had one, tried it on and liked it a lot, but the price was the full $60 and I couldn’t stomach it. They do have a lot of variations on the super-thin blazer, though. Many different styles and colors to choose from.

  45. Alex says

    April 22, 2011 at 2:55 PM

I finally had a chance to wear this jacket out & I have to say that it is fantastic. The fit is superb (although I have somewhat long arms) & I received several compliments on my purchase.

    Thanks Joe!

AH! Im bummed that I missed this! But Im VERY stoked to have found this website. I’ll be here next time there’s a catch like this.   Im surprised GQ and Gilt manual don’t talk about this site cause they talk about fashion sites a ton like valet and such and i luckily found this site and its BY FAR the best.
