It’ll be here before you know it. So if you’re in need of a few ideas on what to give (or in some cases, what to put on your own list) this year, this is the place to be for the next couple weeks. Our annual 12 days of Dappered covers one item each week-day between now and December 11th. That’ll leave some time for shipping if you’re the last minute type. All will be reasonably affordable. See the growing archive here.
The excitement level on this gift has a bit of a time-release factor. It’s not the sexiest gift in the world, but they’re a necessity that most guy’s just don’t keep enough of on hand.
Like a bra, a hanger offers proper support. Proper support reduces the unfortunate effects the earth’s gravitational pull can have on a vulnerable shape over time. Hanging your blazers, sportcoats, and suit jackets on these wide-end hangers keeps those shoulders… “perky”. This is what these hangers are made to do. And most of us fellas are almost always limping along with one or two flimsy substitutes from the dry cleaner (y’know, the standard wire pants hangers with the floppy plastic shoulder “roof” on top.)
Look at those delts. Beware. Some hangers say “suit hangers” but they don’t have wide ends like these.
Try Bed Bath & Beyond (what a nice little Saturday), Amazon, or even off-price department stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, & Ross. These wide shoulder things run between $5 and $10 a pop.
Meanwhile, if this person is firmly atop your “nice” list, and he’s the type who likes to plan ahead, consider a classic Men’s Valet. Holds all of his gear for the next day neatly, so he can set it out before he turns in.
Winsome – $61.99 (via Amazon) Brooks Bros. USA Made Cedar Valet – $105, Kings Brand – $52.99
(via Amazon)
I’ve had a valet for over a decade now. Very useful! If you wear a uniform to work, I consider these a must.
Also, Amazon has that 100 Target valet for 61.99
I got a valet at Goodwill for dirt cheap, but I need to get a replacement for the top hanger rack. Any suggestions?
Got it. Annnnd updated.
Great call on the thrift store route. Saw one the other day at a thrift store and I’m kicking myself for not getting it. Maybe get a wide shouldered hanger w/out the pant bar and do some minor sawing, drilling, and gluing?
Yeah, I totally jumped out of my skin when I saw a $200+ valet going for $7.95. One of my best thrifts ever! I might have to do the “do it yourself” route since I couldn’t find replacement parts for it.
My wife would love for me to have one of those valets. I always prep for the next day by pulling stuff out and hanging it on dresser drawer knobs.
Of the three above, I think the Winsome is my favorite because it has that convenient tray.
The Container Store also has a wide selection of hangers.
Including ceder non-finished hangers that help take moisture out of jackets in the summer
I use wide-ended suit hangers from The Container Store, but my problem is the hanger seems too wide for the jacket. The ends of the hanger are wider than the shoulders on the jackets. I haven’t noticed any permanent deformation (like you’d get from hanging a sweater) but it worries me greatly.
