Sure grey might be boring. But it’s versatile as all hell, clean, and delivers a much different impression than bright red or lime green pants. Grey’s not just for jackets anymore. Five suggestions on how to work it in follow…

Especially at this time of year when it’s still very much summer, but plenty are itching for fall. Instead of sun absorbing deep dark denim, find yourself a pair of medium to lighter grey jeans. They’ll be extra nice if you can find them in a mid-weight fabric as opposed to something rigid. Wear them with a blue cotton blazer to work or with a white polo when it’s hot. And when fall does finally get here, you won’t have to shelve them… unlike your almost white pants.
Born to be worn with (blue) jeans, but could also pull some duty with deeper brown chinos or cords. Grey suede chukkas/desert boots can be a go-to weekend favorite that’ll keep you comfortable but still look a little more interesting than a standard brown. Don’t discount loafers or wingtips in grey suede either.
A grey chambray pocket square is a quick and easy way to break up a solid suit when going tieless. That, and if your sans tie, the chambray keeps it dressed down even if it’s a darker color. Headed somewhere more casual and can’t stand the tieless look? Put on a matte tie and keep the grey in your pocket. Striped budget option available through thetiebar for eight bucks.
“But do I have to match my shoes to it?” There is some leather or leather like fronts on belts like these, but even if you go with a solid grey web or suede belt… well, you probably weren’t matching your shoes to those brighter summer belts that got so popular were you? Same rules, or lack thereof, apply here.
Got a friend who’s gone grey and has said a few times that he just doesn’t like it. Can’t understand why. It looks great on him. In fact, it’s hard to come up with a man that grey hair DIDN’T look good on. Sorry ladies… it’s one of the unfair style advantages us guys get as we age.
Smart choices, both in style and practicality, for rainy fall days.
