J. Crew Extra 40% off SALE and Factory

July 16, 2012 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

40% off J. Crew Sale and Factory Sale items w/ OURTREAT

Code Expires Wednesday 7/18/12.  Careful with the items marked Final Sale.  You can’t return those.

A code worth an extra 30% off sale/factory sale happens with some regularity.  40% off doesn’t.  It’s rare and only happens a few times a year.  But now that we’re halfway through July, Fall items are starting to breathe down the collective necks of all the linen, seersucker, and lightweight summer stuff.  But thankfully, there’s more than just that purely summer stuff on sale…
.

J. Crew Factory Thompson Suit Jacket & Pant – $189.60 total (Low $20os – $318)
The obligatory car wash shot

You won’t find a better fitting, feeling, or looking suit for under $200.  Minimal shoulder padding and a great off the rack fit.  80% wool, 20% poly, 0% scratchy feel or cheap look.  Has a bit of a heathered look to the fabric which makes it interesting, but still completely conservative office/event appropriate.  The best affordable suit of 2011.  Full review here.  A favorite.

J. Crew Aldridge Italian Chino Suit Jacket + Matching Pant =  $207.60 ($456)
Aldridge = the Ludlow’s not as skinny brother.

More than a few of us still have a summer wedding or two to attend this year.  But leave time to get this thing tailored.  Comes in their more generous “Aldridge” fit, so you might need to get some work done on the sides.  Available in the khaki “wheat” color, or the much lighter “stone.”

J. Crew MacAllister Suede – $59.99 ($135) | MacAllister Oiled – $59.99 ($148)
Made in Italy and can be resoled.

Wow.  Under $60 for an Italian made boot that can be resoled.  That’ll do nicely.  The Suede has some size gaps (unless you have smaller feet then you’re good to go) but the MacAllister Oiled seems to have plenty of common sizes still available.  For now.

J. Crew Cashmere Crewneck Sweater – $59.99 ($225)
“Expected to ship 10.09.2012”

Your guess is as good as mine as to why this camel colored “heather toffee” is marked down to $99, but the other colors (like pink?) aren’t.  A warm honey colored camel/beige like this looks outstanding over a white OCBD with dark jeans and a pair of darker brown boots, like the MacAllisters above.  A final sale item, and one of those “doesn’t ship till October” things.

J. Crew Thompkins Pant in Slim Straight Fit – $47.99 ($98)
A change of pace for the denim addicts?

Watch yourself here if you’ve got some thickness below the knee.  Fit gets reportedly pretty slim down there.  5 pocket pant that could be the middle ground between jeans and work chinos.  They have done some serious washing/finishing to give them a vintage look.  Final sale on these.

J. Crew Secret Wash Lightweight Solid or Gingham Shirt – $23.99 ($64.50)
White still has some sizes, navy gingham all but sold out.

J. Crew shirts for Target prices?  Sure.  Might be something to toss in your cart if you’re close to the free shipping threshold but not quite there.

J. Crew Factory Point Collar Solid or Gingham Dress Shirt – $29.70 ($59.50)
From Factory. More dressed up.

Or, if you want something a little less rumpled, there’s these over at the J. Crew Factory site.  Not available in neck and sleeve measurements though.  Just the standard S, M, L, etc…

J. Crew Corded Cotton Ludlow Sportcoat – $101.99 ($188)
Pattern is real small on this one.

Down to just Medium and XL at post time.  Fabric could be a little less stiff, but highly versatile.  Pattern is small enough that you can easily wear it with other, larger patterns.  Great with jeans.  Off white pants in summer too.

The Extra 40% off code OURTREAT expires Wednesday 7/178/12, but know that at these prices, stock is going to be gone quick.  Like, bloody porterhouse in a shark tank quick.  As always, only items with a decent size selection at post time featured, unless otherwise noted.

Perfext timing. Needed to buy my first suit and was hoping this would drop down. Any tips for making sure I order it sized right the first time?

I bought the MacAllister oiled about a year and a half ago and they are still going strong. Would recommend them, especially at that price.

I bit on the cashmere sweater. Good buy.

Finally got that Thompson suit for my job interview on Friday. Ready to look like a million bucks!

Bit on the suit. Was ready to buy at retail, but glad I waited. Will look nice with some walnut laceups.

Never bought from J Crew before so I’m not sure about non-measured sizes since I’m usually in between small/medium (skinny w/ broad shoulders) Can anyone help? I’m normally a 15/32 for measured shirts. Should I go w/ a small or medium in J Crew? Thanks in advance!

  8. Christopher Chan says

    July 16, 2012 at 10:37 AM

Picked up the suit and the oiled chukkas. Thanks Dappered!

  9. Christopher Chan says

    July 16, 2012 at 10:39 AM

I am a natural medium and wear a 15.5/32-33. Their shirts are cut generously (even the slim/tailored fits) in the waist but are usually pretty consistent in the chest/shoulders area. I’d go for a medium.

  10. Shawn says

    July 16, 2012 at 10:41 AM

I have a two-part recommendation, so it may not be the most efficient:
    1. Go to a tailor and get your measurements. Buy the suit online with those measurements.
    2. Call JCrew and ask where they have a suit with those measurements available for you to try on. If it doesn’t fit, try a new size until it does – then change your order accordingly.

  11. JJ says

    July 16, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Any idea what the deal is with the boot sizing? They list a 10 medium and a 10h medium. Does 10h mean 10.5 or something?

  12. Shawn says

    July 16, 2012 at 11:05 AM

Yes. Exactly that. The h stands for “half.”

  13. Jay says

  14. TrungH says

Every time there’s a factory sale, I curse the fact that the Thompson suit doesn’t come in a 36…

  15. NS says

    July 16, 2012 at 12:06 PM

How do these factory thompson suit pant fit (slim?). I am not able to find any information on them..

  16. Andrew Hasdal says

    July 16, 2012 at 12:28 PM

Been waiting for the j.crew suits to go on sale. It’s not the ludlow, but I picked up the aldridge for $220 after tax – steal. Even with getting it tailored it’s a huge savings.

  17. ThomasB says

    July 16, 2012 at 1:04 PM

Impossible to resist the Thompson suit at that price. Hope I like it as much as some of you

  18. Nate says

    July 16, 2012 at 1:21 PM

Great. Thanks. It’s probably going to be a buy, then tailor situation then.

  19. Christopher Chan says

    July 16, 2012 at 2:02 PM

Glad it helped. I bought their Baird McNutt linen shirt in classic fit and it’s got way too much arm room in the sleeves (picture octogenarian wing fat- on second thought, don’t; it might hurt) but was ok throughout the torso. I would say that isn’t typical of their shirting though, but I would avoid classic fit in any case if I were you.

  20. Ross R. says

    July 16, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Does anyone have experience with the size of their sweaters? With shirts, I size down and they’re perfect, even in the sleeves (they say they’re 33-34 but they’re more like 34-35). Wondering if the same sizing carries over.

  21. Tim says

    July 16, 2012 at 2:14 PM

Is it possible/advisable to self measure, or at least have someone else measure me at home?

  22. Kenneth Simpson says

    July 16, 2012 at 2:26 PM

Does the “code applies to final sale items” indicate that the Thompson suit is final sale? I’m a little concerned about buying it final sale..

  23. Frank says

    July 16, 2012 at 2:32 PM

Just bought that Aldridge suit last week during their 30% off sale and returned it because I was to swole for a 44R… Maybe I AM supposed to try the 46…

  24. Cyle says

    July 16, 2012 at 2:37 PM

if they only had a 40L for that Thompson suit…

  25. Shawn says

    July 16, 2012 at 3:02 PM

Self measuring is a recipe for disaster. A decent guide, if you have a partner in crime, can be found here:

  26. Adam says

  27. Jack F says

    40L doesn’t get enough love

  28. Christopher Chan says

    July 16, 2012 at 5:24 PM

It worked when I purchased it. I would guess that you could re-sell it on SF or something if it didn’t fit.

  29. rf says

    July 16, 2012 at 5:37 PM

Unfortunately the 38R jacket does not ship until 8/30. Bummer I was going to jump on this for a wedding in a few weeks.

  30. Tim says

    July 16, 2012 at 6:01 PM

Thanks for the tips. I only live 10mins away from an outlet, so I hopped down there and was surprised to find the Thompson there (swear they’ve never had anything but shorts and button ups there) in navy. Chest measured at 35 or 36 at home, and was surprised that a 38R seemed to fit there (was debating 38R or 40R at the neighboring BR outlet). http://i46.tinypic.com/20r6a11.jpg Threw on a spread collar shirt for the picture, so that looks weird, but any thoughts on fit from my one crappy pic?

If it fits, my next question is, navy or charcoal? Navy would come out to ~250 in store. This is my first suit/blazer so if there’s more utility out of one I’d love to know.

  31. Shawn says

    July 16, 2012 at 6:04 PM

I think that’s a great fit! It’s hard to tell if the arms are the right length (hands out of your pockets!), but if the R fits, wear it.

Personally, I’m more of a fan of charcoal because i wear more neutral colors. The navy can look great, especially if you decide to pair it with colors that pop (
    http://www.thesartorialist.com/photos/pitti-uomo-recap-bold-solids/).

Joe might be the best guy to weigh in here if he’s still looking over the comments.

  32. Tim says

    July 16, 2012 at 6:42 PM

Just saw now what someone saw earlier, the charcoal jacket isn’t scheduled to ship until the end of August. Decisions decisions. Buy and see if it ships, but risk missing navy. Buy and return to store, buy both. Hmmm

  33. Longshanks says

    July 16, 2012 at 6:58 PM

Hey Joe (and all others interested),

I’ve had a job with J. Crew Factory since earlier in the summer and hence can give you a breakdown on how the standard sizing in Men’s Long Sleeve shirts like the Point Collar or the Gingham above work.

A Medium is a 15-151/2 in the neck (in at least the Haberdashery shirts, the neck size is listed on the tag but as far as I know this rule applies to all Men’s long sleeve Factory shirts that come in standard sizes) and a 34-35 in the sleeves. To know any of the sizes add or subtract an inch in both neck and sleeve. So, a Large is a 16-161/2 Neck and a 35-36 Sleeve and a Small is a 14-141/2 Neck and a 33-34 Sleeve.

I apologize if you guys happened to know this already, but I figured I’d toss it in, in the off chance it helps anybody out.

  34. Shawn says

    July 16, 2012 at 6:58 PM

In my opinion, go for both and return one (if your credit card can handle it). I’ve never had problems returning to J. Crew. I’d recommend you just check out the terms of the sale to make sure that none of it is final sale only/no returns.

  35. bryclops says

At a stocky 40S, I can hardly wait for that Aldridge to show up. Thanks for the tip on the sale.

  36. Isaac says

Nope and customer service says there is not enough fabric to extend by tailor

  37. JRob says

    July 16, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Anyone know what the hem is like on the Thompson pants? As in, I assume it’s unlikely that I’ll be able to let out 1.5 / 1.75 inches?

  38. Nicholas Crawford says

    July 16, 2012 at 11:54 PM

If a man’s “thickness” extends below the knee…wow…just wow.

  39. Senor Boeuf says

    July 17, 2012 at 7:08 AM

I don’t think the promo code works on the Thompson suit now, as it’s not a sale item. Must have changed it overnight or something. Bollocks.

  40. gary says

    July 17, 2012 at 8:07 AM

Lots of great stuff. Unfortunately, I’ve never shopped at J. Crew before, so I’m hesitant to make online orders. The line between wearing a medium or large for me is blurry, and it varies from brand to brand.

  41. jose_jackson says

    July 17, 2012 at 8:13 AM

Can anyone give me some tips on J Crew numeric dress shirt sizing? Like, if I am 15/33 in Brooks Brothers, I would be __/__ in J Crew.

  42. the passenger says

    July 17, 2012 at 10:13 AM

I’m 6 ft, ~200 lbs, wear a 44 jacket and 36 waist. I buy all my J. Crew button-front shirts and sweaters in XL, otherwise they are too tight. With a sweater you can sometimes get away with going down a size due to the stretchy nature of knits, but since I always wear the sweaters over shirts I prefer the extra bit of room.

  43. JS says

    July 17, 2012 at 10:33 AM

I went to buy the Thompson two Button Suit, however, the promotion code would not apply. Has anyone else noticed the same thing?

  44. spedwig says

    July 17, 2012 at 11:39 AM

Looks like J. Crew caught on; the Thompson is no longer listed as being “on sale” tho the price is the same… but the code no longer takes 40% off (since it’s not on sale).
Should have bit yesterday, I guess.

  46. Phil says

I called and the local factory has this navy suit in my size. I just recently bought the charcoal suit. I like it and the way it fits, but am also curious about the navy (and I probably wouldn’t keep both-it will be a first suit for me, also). The navy is supposed to be 100% wool, but the woman I spoke with on the phone also said it has a kind of visible pattern or weave. Did you notice this? It is hard to tell from the picture. Also, the charcoal suit does have the slightly weird (to me at least) habit of keeping its creases and developing them if it is bent for any length of time. In fact, I still haven’t gotten them out. Curious if the navy feels similar. Or perhaps someone else on this site may know.

Oiled McAllister boots got here today. I guess I’m a size 9.5 in their boots since there’s a thumb’s width left. It works though.

Follow-up: the button stance was a little low and the jacket was a little too long, even for a short size. Pants were also pretty billowy. Returned.
