Bonobos Facebook Deal – Will 50% off Happen?

September 16, 2011 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Bonobos Facebook Page – 50,000 “likes” by September 30th = 50% off

If you “like” Bonobos on Facebook, come October 1st you’re going to be rewarded with a code for at least 30% off.  That number is also rising, and that code could potentially be worth up to 50% off.  It all depends on whether or not Bonobos hits 50,000 Facebook likes by the end of the month.  If that happens?  Half off for their facebook fans, with a few stipulations.  Here’s the fine print:

Promotion only open to consumers who “like” Bonobos’ Facebook page. Maximum discount for the promo code distributed through this promotion is 50% off purchase. Promo codes valid for one purchase of up to $500. Promo codes may be redeemed from October 1, 2011 at 12:00am EDT to October 2, 2011 at 11:59pm EDT on Bonobos’ Facebook page. Limit one unique promo code per customer. Customers must provide their email address to receive their unique promo code via email. Each promo code is valid for one purchase made on Bonobos.com on October 3, 2011 from 12:00am to 11:59pm EDT.

Couple of sticking points here:

  1. You’ll have to give them an email address in addition to liking them on FB.
  2. There’s a limited window to GET the code (October 1st – October 2nd)
  3. And this is the big one… it MUST be used on October 3rd.

This promotion is a bit of genius by Bonobos.  A facebook “like” is gold to retailers.  Not only do they get access to you in another much more personal & detailed way, many of your friends will see you’ve aligned yourself with the brand.

That, and the way they’ve set it up just looks slick.  Nice old-school flip counter.

At this rate they’ll cruise past 50k no problem.  What say you.  You think they make it?  And are you in w/ a like?  Also, looks like they’re doing another round of Living Social deals.  Here’s the one for today (credit Max with the tip)

I’m slight confused about how I give them my email address. Are they going to send me a Facebook message and then I supply them with my email address?

  2. Anonymous says

    September 16, 2011 at 10:14 AM

Yeah, same problem here. I liked them but there’s no option for e-mail address. A bit of help?

  3. Chris says

    September 16, 2011 at 10:41 AM

You go back on the 1st and they will provide instructions on how to redeem it then.

The truth here is search engine marketing.  Google recently changed their search engine from solely keyword searching to querying your whole online presence.  Searches now consider your whole social media fan base.  This is why more and more retailers are asking people to “like” them.  But yes, it also gives the company a direct marketing channel to its fan base.

I’d do this but I’m not feeling Bonobos so much anymore.  My first pair of Bonobos slacks had poor stitching.  Second pair I had to let out but found that there was no dye where they pressed the bottom of the cuff.  E-mailed their “ninjas” twice about assistance, no response.

  6. branxini says

    September 16, 2011 at 12:58 PM

Not for me. I feel like Bonobos have peaked. Not such a great value IMHO, even at a hypothetical 50% discount.

  7. branxini says

    September 16, 2011 at 12:59 PM

Although i can’t help but wonder – what if they get the number of likes over 100k? Then what – give away shit for free and pay me to take it? If that’s the case, I’ll take it!

  8. Brad Dolan says

Unsure of a few things, such as whether it can stack with the living social deal or the first time 50$ off

  9. branxini says

    September 16, 2011 at 1:05 PM

My sentiment exactly. Basically, over-hyped (admittedly well done, while the hype lasted), run of the mill  mall-quality crapola.
$150 for a flannel “work” shirt? $185 pants? Puhlease. I have 30$ pants of the same quality that fit me better. The khakis are no better than any gap or LE pant at a quarter of the price . etc.

  10. Phil L. says

    September 16, 2011 at 1:22 PM

FWIW, I looked for about 1.5 years for the fit of khakis/chinos that fit me well (i.e. slim, but not like skinny jeans which is what I find a lot of the slim khakis cut as) and the Bonobos fit me almost perfectly. I am actually slim enough that I could even take out a touch more in thigh area.  But the waist, knee, and below are perfect.  I would say most of their stuff is overpriced by about 15-20% all things considered, but I just wait for coupons, sales, 1/2 price GC etc.

  11. BenR says

    September 16, 2011 at 1:36 PM

Read the fine print. They cap the discount at 50%.

  12. the new transported man says

    September 16, 2011 at 1:50 PM

The fit is exactly why I have anything from Bonobos, that much they do right.  But I’d only buy on super-deep ultra mega-discount, & now I’m less inclined to do that.

Interesting business model, though.  Make clothes with a marked uptick in fit & style.  List clothes at ridiculous mark-up.  Sell clothes at ridiculous mark-up to people that have no concept of the value of money.  Sell more clothes at more reasonable price to patient, social media-savvy shoppers.

“Customers must provide their email address to receive their unique promo code via email.”  There are a few hoops.  You like em’ now, you go back on October 1st and then give them your email at that point.  They send you the code, and you have to use the code on October 3rd.  Lotta hoops.

  14. Joe says

    September 16, 2011 at 2:01 PM

Oooh.  Damn, this is interesting.  This is the first time in recent memory that anyone has said something negative about Bonobos.  And the fact that you emailed the ninjas and got no response?  That’s something.  I wonder if this is the start of a dip in the Bonobos love?

  15. Matthew Nichols says

I imagine it will be a promotional code, like the $50 first time buyer or the current 20% off code. Should stack with the LivingSocial deal since that is a gift certificate.

I’m a Bonobos virgin – never bought anything there, though I have looked at the site a few times. I guess their stuff looks ok, but it’s hard to even consider buying it when I could get something (at full price!) from J.Crew for less. I mean, come on, Bonobos – $600 for a corduroy blazer?! $100 for a dress shirt? Even if their fit is as awesome as they say it is, it can’t possibly be worth that kind of markup. All a 50% discount would do to the price is bring it back within the realm of “reasonable MSRP.” $300 for a jacket, $50 for a dress shirt, $90 for a pair of wool pants… those prices still don’t tempt me.

Maybe if all their stuff was made in the US at their own factories from predominantly American materials, I could see some justification for the high prices. Given that they don’t provide country of origin details on the website, I’m going to assume they manufacture in the same countries (and possibly the same factories) as J.Crew, Banana Republic, and all the other higher-end “mall shops.”For now, I’ll keep my $75 J.Crew Factory cord blazer and my $20 Merona dress shirts, thanks.

  18. Lsufuse says

    September 16, 2011 at 2:55 PM

Last I remember their stuff is made in New York, the pants at least. As for the cost, the more expensive stuff is from outside designers (Gant, Jack Spade, Grenson) and most of their wool pants are made from Italian wool. I like their stuff and feel that the quality and fabrics are a step beyond J Crew, you just have to stay with the house brand stuff and stay away from the “curated” stuff.

  19. Joe says

    September 16, 2011 at 3:08 PM

Last time I checked, and its been awhile, their oxford shirts were made in the USA (Philadelphia to be exact), but their pants aren’t anymore.

  20. Matthew Nichols says

    September 16, 2011 at 3:14 PM

I jumped on the JungleCents/DailyHookUp deal and regret it. Now I feel like I am spending more money to fix the problem because I just bought the LivingSocial dea so I could shoot for something nicerl. My first purchase was a blazer that was both a weird fit and was a hassle to return (exactly the opposite of what I’d read, maybe they are getting so much traffic from these deals). More importantly though, the quality didn’t seem worth what I paid even with the discounts, let alone the retail price.

So I’m sitting on $250 (store credit from returns) + $70 LivingSocial and I guess I’m gonna try their pants out. I think I only have $135 into it… but I forget how much I paid for each exactly. LivingSocial sent me the certificate code but it won’t accept it yet. I just want to order a few pairs of pants since thats what everyone seems to recommend from them but now it sounds like people are jumping ship on them.

  21. Phil L. says

    September 16, 2011 at 3:53 PM

Definitely give the pants a try, I think the difference in fit between their pants and competitors pants is much bigger difference and more worth it than the difference in their shirts/blazers, etc.  Their chinos at ~$60 a piece after discounts have been worth it for me without a doubt.

I can concur about seams coming apart at the leg on two pair of bonobos pants. They were small. I took pics and called them back. Fortunately, the cust service was good and the gave me store credit in exchange for my tailor to stitch them up. A word to the wise, email responses will get you nowhere….you have to call for something to happen.

I have $350 worth of credits at B — all of it due to the fine folks here using a link of mine that gave me $50 per referred purchase; thanks all! — and haven’t been able to find a thing to spend it on.  i have three pairs of their cords, and like them, but i see nothing else that fits my style.  not even the watches.  sigh.

I bought the Living Social deal and plan on using that, plus the $50 off first purchase to buy a $120 gift card, then hopefully they get to 50,000 fans, and I will be able to get $240 worth of stuff for only $35.

So they are going to fulfill potentially 50,000+ orders in one day? Let’s hope they stock up on common sizes, and have a backup server!

I’ve been very pleased with the fit of my two Bonobos pants. I picked up a shirt that was OK…not very slim fitting and material was comparable to a JCrew or Banana Republic soft wash. Definitely would never buy anything from them for less than 50% given their ridiculous sticker prices.

  28. Linter says

    September 16, 2011 at 7:31 PM

hey — i’d give you $25 in B credit if we can figure out a way to do it.  like, seriously!

now, don’t all the rest of you who bought through my link start trying to horn in on Jason’s good fortune.  this is a one person offer … if it’s even possible!

  29. A.M. says

    September 16, 2011 at 7:55 PM

Grenson shoes for 25-50% off is pretty, pretty, pretty good.

The pants on sale are not badly priced. $68. Use one of these social deals, and it’s $34. And this Facebook deal might even bring them down to $17, if they don’t take away the sale items on October 3rd.

If you know of any where else where you can get pants of equal or better fit, fabric and finish for $34, do tell. The curved waistband and contoured seat is still unmatched at this price point.

The casual jackets are overpriced. The blazers and suits have a horrendous shrunken look to them, and the waist is far too high – the top button a two button jacket should be at the waist, i.e. just below the navel, not at the bottom of the ribs. Eg http://www.bonobos.com/river-street-suit

Your experience is so unlike any experience I’ve had with them it’s almost like we are talking about different companies.  This thread is also the first time I’ve seen so much criticism of them.  Different strokes, I guess.  They are pricey, which is why I wait for deals and such, but they are about the only pants that fit me well, even the shirts I’ve bought from them have fit exemplarily.

  31. Phil L. says

    September 16, 2011 at 8:36 PM

This is sounding more and more like not a completely thought out business plan for Bonobos within these past 2 months. All of my purchases and e-mail correspondence was between May and July. I had no problem getting a response to e-mails within 24 hours, many times with the same day. No issues with an exchange in June. So I wonder that if they are just getting to much traffic for their small company to handle, and they didn’t have it in their business plan on how they would handle this much traffic. Again, for me their pants are most definitely worth buying at a slight discount, but other stuff, not so much.

  32. Matthew Nichols says

I like Bonobos. Emailed a few times and got responses within the hour. Shirts and pants fit better than any company I have seen. Their sweaters and golf pants seem like they were custom-made for me. Have a couple more gift certificates from them and love the half-off deals. Great company in my opinion!

Say what you will about the quality of the products and their prices–frankly their pants, while pricey, fit like a dream–but the real reason I will continue to support them as much as possible because their customer service is the best I’ve ever seen.  Their dedication to service is simply phenomenal and they exemplify a model of what all companies should be.  Multiple times I’ve emailed them and received very detailed personalized responses, and what surprised me most was last Sunday when I couldn’t get my giftcards to work after they swapped operating systems I called them up on a Sunday evening and was shocked to get a human who actually was able to take care of everything, applying store credit to my account instantly–left me truly impressed.  Will continue to patronize Bonobos as much as possible.

I actually received great responses to emails not two months ago.  They also knocked of ~$15 from the price of a pair of shorts (already on sale) since the original pair was a bit large in the waist.

One other thing about the high prices to remember; no shipping costs ever.  Obviously most companies cannot afford to just eat the cost, but I personally enjoy being able to know the actual cost of something before getting to the point where I need to enter payment information & the cost has gone up $10-$20.

I am similarly new to Bonobos, and I emailed the ninjas about country-of-origin information earlier tonight.  The response, for anyone interested, was this:  Our clothes are made all over the world (USA, Canada, Egypt, China, India,
Bangladesh, etc.), but we’re extremely picky about only partnering with socially
responsible factories, so there’re no worries there. We send over one of our own
a few times a year to check on things and make sure everything’s still as
    stand-up as it ever was.
