Macy’s One Day Sale
Picks – May 6 – 7, 2011
As always, it’s incredibly tough to peg when Macy’s will launch a One Day Sale. Sometimes a month and a half will go by between them, sometimes only a few weeks will pass. One thing is certain: These are sales worth paying attention to. The one-day sale prices are some of the best mark downs in the retail industry. Here’s some of the best from the One-Day-Sale which runs Friday May 6 – Saturday May 7th. Items marked with a * are “Web Busters.” In store prices may match up, and may not. Selection on all items (especially shoes) in store can vary greatly.
.
Alfani RED Cotton/Silk Suit Jacket – $99.99 and pants – $49.99 (reg. $350)

WARNING: Haven’t seen this in store yet. Cotton/Silk blends are often a terrific way to get a smooth summer ready suit. But the sheen can be an issue. This could have some serious sheen. And if we’ve learned nothing from these last few months, too much sheen is an awful, awful thing. Really. Depending on shine, this thing could be a bargain if you’re into the light-grey suit thing, or, an absolute catastrophe. Ships free, returns are free in store.
.
Alfani RED Bar Stripe Knit Tie – $19.99
* (reg. $45)
Well look what’s back and on sale. $20 is a fair price for one of the more casual, versatile, knit ties you’ll find. Ties a pretty decent knot too. Pretty trim in the width so steer clear if you don’t like that look.
.
Ralph Lauren Custom Fit Striped Rugby – $36.99 (reg. $89.50)

Probably the lowest you’ll see these go for. The custom is an honest-to-goodness trim fit (and could be too trim for some) that eliminates all that extra bulk you usually get with Rugbys. Not a ton of color options, good size selection.
.
Calvin Klein Textured French Cuff Dress Shirt – $38.99
(reg. $65.00)

The texture is thin and runs north to south, making this one of the best dress shirt options for wearing with a tux. If you don’t like that entire winged collar pleated front tux shirt look, this is a great affordable alternative. Plus, it’s just flat out a nice dress shirt. Absolutely wearable with suits.
.
Hilfiger Trim Fit Tuxedo Jacket – $149.99 ($375) & Pant – $74.99 (reg. $175)

Speaking of black tie, wedding season is almost here. And despite the temperatures, a lot of couples like to throw black tie late afternoon into the evening weddings. Don’t get caught having to rent a tux at the last minute. The Hilfiger Trim Fit isn’t too skinny, isn’t traditional fit either, and can be tailored to fit your body shape.
.
Tallia Orange Check Houndstooth Sportcoat in red – $149.99
(reg. $250.00)

A word about moderation. One item that pops is good. Two is pushing it. This dude above looks like he’s showing up for graduation day at his local Clown College. Tallia Orange is the mark (like Alfani RED) and they’ve got an updated fit. Been mentioned in Esquire/GQ as well. Risky, not for beginners, and for God sakes keep the rest toned down.
.
Timberland Earthkeepers Desert Canvas Chukka – $69.99 (reg. $80.00)

Not bad looking for a ready to get beat up Chukka. A weekend or beers at the bar shoe for sure. Nice contrast sole, and from the Timberland Earthkeepers line.
.
CR by Clubroom Fitted Iris Gingham
& Fitted Aqua Check – $19.99*
(reg. $45.00)

Good on Macy’s for expanding their usually old and boxy Club Room line to the new more fitted CR. $20 for a colorful checked shirt isn’t half bad. Especially if you’re going for something like this look.
.
Diamond Flower Cluster – $119
(reg. $300) Diamond Round Stud – $199 (reg. $500)

A reminder guys, Mother’s Day is Sunday. These aren’t real appropriate for your actual Mom, but if you have kids? You best not forget about she who carried your offspring. Diamond Studs that are a little more intricate than just one stone are about as safe a play as it gets. Plus, she can wear em’ just about anywhere. Department Store diamonds can vary greatly in quality, so if you’re looking to buy, head in store and ask to see multiple options side by side. Pick the pair that the light bounces off of the best.

This current Macy’s One Day Sale ends Saturday 4/16.
That Talia Orange Sports Coat is pretty nice looking. Despite my thrifty tendencies, if they actually carried it in my size I’d consider dropping the $150 on it. Those check and gingham shirts are perfect for the upcoming season as well.
Lastly, thank you for recognizing that there is potentially more than one ‘mom’ in your life for whom you should do something nice this weekend!
I’m tempted buy the Alfani piece. I just purchased my first Alfani Red jacket 2 days ago (in store, 50% off so 162.50) and I like it except the 2 things you noted in the review: the arm holes and the shoulders).
Other than that, the Alfani Red jacket that I purchased may be the best fitting off-the-rack jacket I have EVER purchased.
I’m very much on the border about buying another one. On the one hand, the fit is almost perfect, but the armholes are (or almost, at least) a deal killer.
Hmm…decisions.
Also, what do you think about the Club Room Corded Cotton Sports Coat?
I tried one at Macys 2 days ago and I thought it was ok. Not great, but ok. Not good enough to pay the marked price ($165 at the time) but perhaps at the current 69 I could make it work.
I was in a rush, so I didn’t really pay too much attention to it (quality and fit) so I’d like to hear the opinion of anyone who has worn/owned it.
Anyone know the fit on the Rugby, specifically the sleeve length? I’m 6’2″ 190lbs and wear a 16 34/35 in dress shirts. Not sure if I should grab a M or L.
Thanks for the Mother’s Day tip.
great picks. already had the alfani red jacket so picked up the pants.. and the RL rugby this time around.
Um… the tie is polyester. Pass.
Large. I’m 5’9″-10″ 165-170 and a medium is pretty fitted on me.
You ever see it in person? Ties a great knot and looks good.
I too was a bit hesitant to pick up some of the Macy’s knit ties due to the polyester composition. I gave it a shot though and I can vouch that they do look pretty nice and tie great knots. In fact, I’m wearing one right now.
Thanks, Joe! Just grabbed a large.
I’d definitely check out the “cr by clubroom” fitted polos. I got two of the “montauk jersey” today in store; at just north of $10, I think they beat out the mossimo polos, with the pocket (that I wouldn’t have guessed I’d like) and the sewn wasp logo. I have large arms and shoulders, and while the shirt is a little short in the arms, it just looks more like an outershirt, and not a t-shirt with a collar, as the mossimo does in comparison. ymmv, of course, but while I needed to move up a size to XXL to get the RL custom fit polos to not look “baby gap” on my arms, these club rooms look great at an XL, and the tail isn’t too long to leave untucked.
Similarly, the other club room fitted shirts fit me excellently, all in XL. Some of the Tasso Elba fitted are great; the Tasso “fitted solid slub,” while not an endearing name, is a slick shirt. Looks like chambray, with an accent fabric inside the buttons and collar, but is a little rougher than a regular chambray–read, too sandpapery (pre-wash, this is) to be worn w/o an undershirt, unless you have nipples of steel.
I wear it with my pimp-step tommy patch madras. Oh. Yes. I. Did.
I am in love with that Tallia jacket…
I am totally digging that Tallia jacket. Any word on fit, shoulders, and/or armholes?
I recently purchased that Alfani Red jacket and pants set except it was the silk-poly blend. It has a nice structure and the sheen is conservative with enough volume to make noise. The jacket also has a trim fit off the rack, however, it’s structure can cause the lapels to peak in the middle. I would suggest tailoring which, after the sale, only added up to about $235 in my case.
Regarding those Polo rugbys, there were many colors available at my local Macy’s. It was indeed a perfect trim fit. I was on the fence about it (impulse buy considering I was going for a suit) but I’m now kicking myself for passing up a great deal.
