STORE WARS: Macys vs. Target
Starting March 15th and running through April 4th, Dappered.com is hosting a bracket based tournament with the purpose of eventually crowning the all around Affordable Men’s Style Retail Champ for 2011. For a full introduction see this post. For the full bracket, click on the image to the right. Feel free to make a case for your preferred competitor in the comments section, but don’t forget to vote at the bottom of each match up. On with today’s showdown:
.
Strengths: Versatility. Accessibility. Balance of affordable yet still nice. Their One Day Sales. Their strong in-house brand Alfani Red. Good sub $300 suits. Levi’s that go on sale a lot. Some INC offerings. The 20% off monthly coupons they send card members. Decent watches. A good place to find your significant other a gift.
Weaknesses: Their shoe department. Macys.com can get a little clunky and shipping can be steep. Sometimes those coupons come with a boatload of exclusions. And seriously, when are they NOT having some kind of sale?
Strengths: Incredibly inexpensive but still has some good looking stuff. Their Mossimo tees and polos. Their Merona dress shirts aren’t half bad either.
Weaknesses: Lack of quantity and variety in fitted clothing. Quality can be an issue. Can feel like an upscale WalMart. Most have a weird snackbar. Lots of kids running around.
Your votes determine who moves on to the next round. Cast your ballot below:
UPDATE: And Macy’s moves on with a convincing win.

Store Wars: Macy's vs. Target
- Macy's (73%, 454 Votes)
- Target (27%, 164 Votes)
Total Voters: 618

Voted target. Inexpensive basics that look good and (generally) fit decently.
Macy’s has one thing Target or most other stores on the chart can’t match — a real Big & Tall department (albeit by mail order) — because not every body can do the slim fit. (And sorry, XXL is not Big & Tall.)
Definitely Target. Macy’s may carry more upscale brands, but most of those brands carry a price premium not matched by their quality. Target is a much better value for the money.
Macy’s and I haven’t been getting along like we used, but I still remember the good times: $160 Hugo Boss Suit, $99 Kenneth Cole New York, $9.99 Designer Dress Shirts. I’ve got to give it to Macy’s. I’d never wear a Target suit, and I can get much more than simple staple clothing at the star. (Also, I’d like to throw a little empathy to “fit-challenged.” I know sizing will certainly sway my opinion for some of the match ups. – Talking to you J. Crew.)
I voted Target. Last winter I picked up quite a few good deals on things like their merino sweaters, fitted dress shirts and winter coats. Macy’s has a lot of crap at high prices mixed in with known brands.
I wouldn’t buy a suit from Target because I can’t get with the polyester. Nor would I buy one from Macy’s, the poor service (the people that work there are idiots) and high prices have lead me to find a better fitting suit from Indochino for a whole lot less money.
Whoaaa, tough choice. I think the losing store (whichever it is) could have gotten farther in the tournament against a difference first round opponent. But – that’s why we call it a competition.
Anyway, I vote Macy’s. While Target has some pretty awesome and affordable stuff, they can’t hold a candle to the sheer volume of men’s apparel Macy’s offers. So even if you like only 20% of what you find there, you’re likely to have more options over smaller stores. Quantity rules over quality, at least in this case.
The problem I have with Target stems from when I registered there for my wedding. They deleted my registry before the reception we had in my wife’s home town and were terrible when it came to returns. Then their gift cards failed to work because they were scratched causing us long multiple phone calls to customer service.
That said, it’s still one of my favorite places to shop; I just make sure I am not planning on returning anything, ever.
Macy’s.
Target has some great deals but it is really hit or miss. Macy’s is so versatile and has so many brands that I can walk into a store and know that there will be stuff that I want. Plus, their sales can be crazy. I’ve gotten $300 coats for $50 and $50 shirts for $10.
Target could have my vote if they would just give me those Mossimo polos in a tall size. But they won’t. So they can’t.
Macy’s in a Route. The best looking selection of duds along with the best deals. Although in fairness I’ll probably vote Macy’s against nearly all-comers.
My vote goes to Macy’s, by a mile.
For me personally, Target is a place to shop for a select few items, like polos or socks, maybe an occasional button down shirt. Am I gonna buy a blazer or a suit at Target? Probably not. It seems like the deciding factor for just about every purchase I make at Target is cost, never quality. Sure, Mossimo makes a decent product, but its the price that really motivates the purchase for me. If I want a high quality polo and don’t mind spending an extra $15 – $20, Macy’s is going to offer a lot more options.
Target do have some nice stuff… the Mossimo polos. That’s about it. Yeah, you can buy your undershirts, socks, and underwear and other under-what-nots there, but it’s not really a clothing store. Or even a department store with a clothing department. It’s like an upscale Walmart. I won’t say that Target isn’t a great value buy place, but Macy’s destroys Target in this matchup.
I also did a registry there for my wedding and had absolutely no problems – especially with returns! They were willing let us return things that weren’t even purchased from our registry (as long as they were purchased there) and we didn’t have to have gift receipts.
Target all the way!
2-3 weeks ago I bought 2, one hundred percent wool suits from Macys. The wool was of good quality, the suit pants were pleatless, and the jacket and well fitted, and I did it for a total of under $400. When Target can offer me that, I’ll switch over, but right, it really is just an upscale Walmart.
I had to vote for Target because I have never been sprayed in the eyes with cologne that I didn’t want. It happened 3 different times at Macy’s. To make matters worse the scents were Drakkar, Polo, and Obsession.
I voted Target based on availability and affordability.
The perfume department at Macy’s and their shoe department are definitely marks against them. However, I don’t feel like I will catch some schoolyard virus when I am at Macy’s, so that is a huge plus. Target is often a better deal, especially for accessories like belts and such. I have dropped 40 pounds over the last 7 months and my skinny jeans are now baggy, so I went to Macy’s for a belt. They had hundreds of “Genuine Leather” belts that looked and felt like plastic or used a cheap split hide. Target had fewer belts, of the same quality but roughly $10 cheaper. I ended up ordering off Zappos, because they had real leather belts, albeit for a bit more money.
I’m not surprised that it looks like Macy’s is going to take this one. But I voted for Target anyway. I simply rarely get items at Macy’s while Target always has some things that I can use for cheap, even if they aren’t high end. And what’s more, I always get compliments on the items that I wear from Target which speaks volumes I think, given the kind of store it is. Macy’s primary business is retail clothing sales, Target’s is not. Yet Target still does a great job of selling clothing that are suitable for those on a budget and those who have some extra ends to burn. And that’s worth my vote also. My two cents.
I voted Macy’s. Just got a great deal on an Alfani Red three piece suit for my wedding.
Voted Target for store accessibility – I’ve always been able to get to a Target easily, no matter where I lived. They’re laid out generally the same, and I can get in, get what I need, and get out.
Macy’s are generally anchored to a mall, so you have to deal with parking, mall rats, white trash, and all the other fun that come with going into a mall. Also, they’re multi-floor layout has always prevented me from understanding what’s going on. Within the men’s dept, there’s no good line-of-sight for me to spot what I’m looking for, and stuff is invariably in 5 different places. I don’t acre who makes it (other than advice from here & elsewhere); jeans should be in one place, not broken up by the designer’s floor rental space.
I’m wholeheartedly surprised that Target got 98 votes somehow. I feel like these are comparing apples to oranges, but that aside Macy’s is infinitely better.
Macy’s has a giant clothes section and, while somewhat weak, a respectable shoes section. They have all sorts of brands ranging in price and quality, and have deals often.
Target has mossimo polos and a bunch of Converse All Star shoes.
Target should have been paired with Goodwill; these matchings are sort of odd.
Target, Just because even know the pickings can be slim. I found some real gems there for next to nothing you just gotta hunt a little bit.
I will say that in terms of clothes, Macys is a better company. That being said (I know, not the point of the match ups) I voted Target because they are a pretty great company.
drakkar? smh
how did your day go by after that drizzle?
I’d have to go with Macy’s though I will admit that I have never bought anything there advertised at full price. The clearance racks are pretty good when you know when to look. Was able to get a couple of peacoats for fifty bucks that I always get compliments with.
Easily Macy’s. You’d be in serious trouble if you had to only wear clothes from Target for the rest of your life. You’d be quite fortunate to only wear clothes from Macy’s for the rest of your life.
Macy’s. I did’nt want to use my Macy’s card nor did I have a 20% off coupon. The cashier procured a coupon from under the register and voila! Twenty percent off.
