Bulova 98A102 black strap – $105 | Citizen Eco-Drive – $123.75 | Seiko 5 Auto – $72.95
Think of a canvas strap watch and you’re almost sure to think of something with a green or brown strap. That is after all, the most common color of canvas. It was the color and fabric that made up our backpacks and anchor-heavy tents when we were kids. Back before lightweight nylon became the fabric of choice (shakes fist at sky in feigned moment of nostalgia). But a black canvas strap can look just as good. See the three watches above as proof.
For the Bulova, who knew they made a black on black version? The natural canvas color w/ the black dial is a bit cheaper, and the really smart thing to do would be to buy that one and pick up a separate black strap. That way you have two straps you can switch out with one of these tools, all for the price of the one Bulova black strap version.
The Citizen Eco-Drive brings a unique green dial, and it’s much larger than you’d think. 42mm isn’t off the charts beefy, but it looks bigger on your wrist than almost any other canvas strap watch. The Seiko 5 is a classic. Automatic movement too. Cheap at around $70.
