Armogan Le Mans Chronograph – $194.98 ($225)
Is it that different from their handsome as heck Spirit of St. Louis? No. Have they perfectly executed all of the design tweaks to give this new, motorsport inspired watch it’s own, unique, drool-worthy look?
Absolutely.
Same domed crystal. Same retro style pushers. Same fantastic font. But there are a few differences. Most notably, the size. This one has been sized down just a touch. The Spirit of St. Louis runs 44mm, which is on the larger end. This is an easy to wear for most 42mm in diameter.
The other main difference is the reduction of subdials (from three to two) and the overall focus on symmetry. The two sub dials are perfectly proportioned and placed at three and nine o’clock, with the date window anchoring the south end of the watch at six. The Armogan logo is at noon, which drives home the classic, evenly placed features. The designers also smartly knocked off the day of the week window, leaving just the date. Makes for a much, much cleaner look.
The subdial at three is a 24-hour time indicator, while the 60 minute chrono time is kept at nine. Would it have been perhaps more functional to have a twelve hour chrono subdial instead of the military time option? Probably. But frankly, the watch looks so darn good it’s hard to argue with the choices the brand made. And note that the dial isn’t as stark white in person as it looks in some of the shots on Huckberry. It’s more of a silver, with some sandy tones to it depending on the light. Really helps give it a vintage look.
The motorsport styling is driven (ha! get it?) home by way of the wheel spoke design on the back of the case, as well as the perforated strap with contrast stitching. Well, the strap is kinda perforated. Those holes don’t go all the way through to the back. So if you’re truly looking for extra ventilation while carving up turns, you might want to go with something aftermarket. But the strap is nice, soft, and pliable right out of the box.
Available in a multitude of color combos direct via Armogan, as well as on Huckberry. But if you want this panda-style? With the deep navy blue sub dials? You’ll have to go through the guys at Huckberry. It’s an exclusive design partnership they’ve made with Armogan. And boy has it ever worked out.
