Quick Picks: J. Crew: 25% off $150 and up

BESTDRESSED = 25% off $150+ at J. Crew (exclusions apply)

The bad news? It’s a disappointingly high threshold, which needs to be tipped to get the deal. The good news? At least it’s 25% off, and not 20% off, and there are a ton of new fall arrivals that are up for the discount. Yes, as always, there are a ton of exclusions. 3rd party, almost all shoes, and Ludlow suits are excluded. (Some Crosby suits do get the discount though. And their incoming topcoats and fall fabric sportcoats aren’t up for this code either.) But, it’s early in the season. That’s not too unexpected.

Still some new goods that get the 25% off. Remember, BESTDRESSED only takes 25% off after you’ve hit $150. So some combining of items might have to be done. A few examples of those combos can be found below.

Sussex Jacket in Moss, Navy, or Charcoal – $148.50 ($198)

Well liked and for good reason. Unlike plenty of other quilted jackets, these are made from a cotton/nylon blend (instead of all synthetic). That means they retain their weather resistance, but they lack the garbage-bag shine and feel. They’re a garment you want to wear, and not a distant cousin to that silly plastic poncho your folks made you wear to school every time it looked like it might rain.

Summerweight Cotton/Linen Sportcoat – $126 ($168)

Well… we’re just about done with the season. But these sportcoats are that good, that they still get a mention when they’re up for a discount (they spent the vast majority of our warm weather period this year excluded). Lightweight. Great drape. Mix of cotton and linen. Go with the black/white stripe option for what’ll essentially amount to a very pale grey, easy to wear with anything, warm weather sportcoat.

SLIM Merino Cardigan + SLIM Merino V = $125.62 ($167.50)

Okay you truly slim and trim guys. The super lean and mean ones. The ones who often get swallowed in regular sweaters, even when they’re made by more modern leaning brands. These slim sweaters just might be what saves you this fall and winter. Yes, they’re spendy, but J. Crew’s slim is a true slim. So, while you’re stuck paying a pretty price (even at 25% off, and, you have to do a combo to trip the threshold)… at least you won’t look like a descending flying squirrel every time you layer up. More slim sweaters can be found here. You’ll have to double up / make combos though to hit that $150 mark.

Italian Cotton Sportcoat in Ludlow or Crosby Fit – $171 ($228)

Ignore the summery image above. This is a year-round sportcoat. Should look awesome with dark wash denim from now until it heats back up in 2017. Crisp Italian cotton. Lightly constructed. Nice to see they’re making these in a Crosby fit now as well.

Dock Peacoat w/ Thinsulate in Navy or Grey – $223.50 ($298)

If the past couple of years are any indication, the prices on these things (and all coats in general, across the menswear spectrum) will plummet in price as the season moves on. Plus, there’s always your local Army/Navy surplus store for a real, authentic version. But J. Crew gets a LOT right about their Dock Peacoat. A touch longer than most peacoats (good for protecting your blazer or suit jacket tail,) plus those chest high hand warmer pockets are extremely convenient.

Waxed Cotton Briefcase + Leather Boothorn = $114 ($152)

Why the boothorn? Because it just pushed the total north of the $150 mark needed to trip the discount. That, and they’re super convienant. And no, you don’t have to use it JUST on boots. It’s great for regular old dress shoes and loafers. Means you don’t have to bend down to put em’ on (can’t help you with the lacing though, if they’re lace ups).

Crosby in Grey, Harbor Blue, Charcoal,  or Navy Worsted – $487.50

Sorry Ludlow types. It’s just the wool Crosby fits that are getting the discount once again. Half-canvas, Italian worsted wool, and cut in a fit that’s much more accommodating for the strength training crowd. Shown above left is a 40R / 33×30 pant on 5’10” / 185. Full review here. Regular price is $650 on these things.

Textured Shawl Collar Cardigan + Wool/Silk Scarf = $122.25 ($163)

Shawl collar cardigan is cotton, but it’s beefy thanks to that awesome textured stitch. Scarf is lightweight, and, if it’s your kinda thing to take risks? Would really look sharp paired up with a suit minus a tie.

Water-Repellant Mac Jacket – $186.00 ($248)

These rarely go on sale. And while they look like a tremendously well executed basic, most of the reviews say they run almost a size large. Now, remember, it’s outerwear. So you have to be able to layer a thicker sweater or a suitcoat/blazer underneath. But still. Wondering what’s up with sizing here.

If they actually do run large, well… (wait for it)

I suppose you could call this particular, simple, (brace yourself)

oversized jacket from J. Crew a… (here it comes!)

Big… Mac

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
COMEDY ALERT! COMEDY ALERT!!!

GET SOME MR. HAMBURGLAR!!!

I’ll let you gather yourself. Good? Good. Back to the picks…

Goodyear Welted Kenton Bucks – $148.50 | Wingtips – $163.50 ($218)

Yes, you can wear bucks in the fall. Just don’t wear white or very light tan bucks in the fall. Those scream Derby Party. Not Halloween. Grey? That’ll be just fine. These come in a silhouette that’s trimmer than classic, bulbous bucks. Plus they have a Goodyear welt. Not bad for mid $100s.

Field Mechanic Jacket – $148.50 ($198)

Garment Dyed. Broken In. Pockets. Lotttttta pockets. All cotton. Looking forward to the kind of weather one would wear something like this in, which is just around the corner for most.

Crosby Fit In Italian Wool – $487.50 ($650)

Yep, the regular Italian wools, in the Crosby fit, are up for this 25% off too. Here’s an explanation of the difference between the fabrics. In my experience (take that for what you will), J. Crew’s worsted options aren’t quite as smooth and silky as their standard Italian wool which is shown above. Yet, the worsted options feel harder wearing. Big fan of the worsted. Looks great, wears great, you can beat the snot out of it. At least, I have.

Abingdon Waxed Canvas Weekender – $148.50 ($198)

Extremely well reviewed. And not some dinky thing either. 17 1/2″H x 26″W x 9 1/4″D = over four thousand cubic inches of space. So, it has room.

Two Pairs of Vintage Cords in Slim or Slim Straight Fit – $112.50 ($150)

$75 for a pair of cords? That’s asking a lot. And for plenty of us, so is $56.25 (which is what it works out to if you buy two then knock 25% off the top with the code). But some of you guys seem to swear by either J. Crew’s 770 (slim) or 1040 (slim straight) fit? So. Well, there you go.

Sporting Quilted Jacket – $201 ($268)

What is this thing, the Sussex on roids? Not sure how to feel about those clasp closures. On the one hand, they look cool. On the other, why do I feel like they’ll get caught on stuff and potentially rip off? Probably not, but. Still.

The 25% off $150+ (with exclusions of course) code BESTDRESSED expires on Friday, 9/23/16.
