Style Scenario: Early Fall Coffee Date

What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. Getting coffee. Perhaps not the most imaginative date, but, it can still be a fun way to get to know someone new (or, spend some down time with your partner). Especially on those cold and rainy fall days when sinking into a deep couch, or, getting close at a small table can generate sparks. Thing is… it’s a coffee shop. So it can be easy to overdress. Skip the jacket (gasp, yes, this website is saying skip the jacket) and go with a top layer that’ll still keep your lines clean, and still be super breathable. Our pick? A lightweight, merino cardigan.

The Cardigan: J. Crew Factory Merino Cardigan – $49.50. Thin but strong. Super breathable. Muted colors. And even though it’s not in their “slim” fit, it’s fitted enough to keep from billowing out on most frames. Also: No pockets on this one. That helps keep those lines super clean. No droopy patch pockets jutting out in the front. Like an waistcoat/vest, make sure you leave the bottom button undone. Top button can be undone too, if you prefer.

The Shirt: Old Navy Slim Fit Poplin in Grey – $15.00. A bright white shirt here might add a little too much contrast. Light blue? Sure, that could work. But a grey poplin (or chambray) keeps the color palate looking awfully autumnal and masculine. Which isn’t always easy to do in a cardigan. And stick with poplin or another lightweight fabric. OCBDs can get warm in a hurry. Especially in a coffee shop that might be making baked goods. Shirt at the top of the post is actually GAP’s “clean” chambray from last year. Doesn’t seem like they’re carrying them this year.

The Sunglasses: Suitsupply Round Sunglasses – $79.00. In case it isn’t a rainy day. Persol like, throwback good looks, minus the exorbitant designer price. Ships and returns free, which is key with sunglasses.

The Watch: Standard Issue Instruments Pilot Mission Timer – $199.99. Big fan of these things. Huckberry exclusive. Yes, it’s a quartz, but the oyster shaped, rugged matte case, and flight inspired dial will also help prevent you from looking like you’re about to break into “won’t you be my neighbor.” (Sidenote: Rest in Peace Mr. Rogers. They broke the mold with you. Our world could use more of your kindness.) Watch at the top of the post is actually the Deep Blue Master 1K. Tough to find these days, but the Standard Issue Instruments is a mighty fine watch in and of itself.

The Shoes: Nordstrom 1901 Barrett Chukkas – $125. Been wearing these for about a week now. Love em’. Full review here.

The Socks: Nordstrom Wool Blend Over the Calf Dress Socks – $14.50. Still. Always. Forever.

The Jeans: Levi’s 514 in Tumbled Rigid – $39.99See above.

The Belt: J. Crew Cotton Web Belt – $34.50. Dark leather to match the brown suede of the shoes. Stretch around the backside for comfort.

The Suggestion: Pay for the both of you, in cash. Cash is classy. Plus, it’s just coffee. Not a trip to Belize. If you can’t step in and pick up the tab now, when can you?
