Style Scenario: Off to the races

What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. Horse racing season is underway. Heading to a local track with some friends is a great way to spend a warm evening, or even a great place to take a date. Lots of fun for minimal money, as long as you keep your betting under control. 

 

The Shirt: Old Navy Classic Slim-Fit Shirt – $15.75 w/ ENJOY. A plain short sleeve cotton button down will serve you well here. Short sleeves will keep you cool as you watch the ponies do their thing. Not big on short sleeve button down shirts? You could always go with a polo, like the ever popular Dry Shirt Collar Polo from Uniqlo. If you’re concerned about a white short sleeved shirt being too transparent, try a grey tank underneath.

The Pants: J. Crew Factory Thompson Suit Pant in Seersucker – $70.40 w/ EXTRA20. If seersucker is appropriate anywhere, it’s at the race track. But if the idea of light pants doesn’t sit well with you, try the navy option instead. They just won’t deflect the sun’s rays like the lighter version will, but if you’re parked in a shady spot, that won’t matter.

The Belt: Nordstrom Leather & Canvas Belt – $49.50. You’re going for a laid back yet still tailored look here, and the canvas in this canvas/leather combination belt lends itself to the “laid back” portion. Plus the warm tones of the belt infuse some color.

The Shoes: Joseph Abboud ‘Jared’ Slip-On Penny Loafer – $89.95. The penny loafer is an easy way to give a casual look a put together vibe. The ‘Jared’ comes in a matte finish, making it appropriate for casual attire, but they can just as easily be worn with a suit. Review here, with more suggestions on how to wear it.

The Socks: Sperry ‘Skimmers Feed’ Socks – $18. (for a 3 pack of brown) Avoid foot funk and slipping/sliding around in your shoes with no-show liner socks. Foot powder can help, but it can also eventually wreck the lining of your shoes. The only drawback to socks is that your feet will be warmer, so let the temperature be your guide.

The Sunglasses: Ray-Ban New Wayfarer Sunglasses – $76.01 Classic, without the size & 1980’s heft of the originals.

The Watch: Rodina Automatic – $109. This is a pretty clean looking ensemble, and the Rodina Automatic fits right in. At 38mm in diameter, it falls into the trend that men’s watches seem to be taking; smaller faces. Full review here.

The Hat: Glory Hats by Goorin ‘Killian’ Fedora – $29.95. Wait, what about this? There is a time and place friends, and perhaps this is the time and place you can pull a hat off. Maybe. And then you have to wait again until you’re 50. GRONK LOVE HAT. (Look, if it doesn’t work for you? It doesn’t work. But don’t be repulsed by the idea of a hat. Lighten up Francis.)
