Updated the handful this a.m., but this is worth taking for a spin on its own.
Lately, J. Crew seems to have been sticking to the 25% off level for these select item sales, and sometimes they can randomly exclude items that you’d think would be in there (for example, sometimes certain blazers will get the discount, while others won’t.) This one still has the usual exclusions, such as suiting, 3rd party, etc., but it seems like the code WEEKENDPLANS isn’t quite as stingy in terms of applicability.
It’s also, obviously, an extra 5% off compared to the 25% off codes. And through today (Friday, 10/10), it’s free shipping no minimum. Not bad if you’re looking to pick up one item like a sweater or a pair of pants that you’d usually have to shell out shipping on. Sportcoats are also in play. Off we go.
The star of this show. Nowhere near as electric blue as it appears on J. Crew’s site… but still fantastic. Lighter-weight flannel, slightly marled, and certainly not a dark & deep navy. Kinda a fall/winter version of their Italian Cotton option from the spring. That’s a 40R on 5’10” / 185lbs, and the sleeves need to be shortened. No issue there since the sleeve buttons are non functioning, and there’s no accent stitching around them either. Half lined. $229.60 for this thing? Fair. Very fair. You’ll probably have to wait (a while?) for these to end up in the sale section, and then a code to hit (say, extra 30% or 40% off sale items) to get a better deal.
SLIM Lambswool Crew or V-Neck Sweaters – $48.65 ($69.50)
Thicker more substantial lambswool, only in J. Crew’s slimmer cut. Even if you’re not super slim, you might end up with lots of extra material at the sides of other lambswool sweaters. Good to see J. Crew taking the thicker wool and making them in a slimmed down silhouette. One of those items that’s a small splurge, but it’ll fit better, and today (Friday) that free shipping makes it extra tempting.
Not cheap, but that pinstripe pattern on a soft, brushed twill (think flannel minus the bulk?) might look extra good under a light grey merino v-neck. Flipping the usual light shirt/dark sweater contrast thing.
A bit of sheen, but not nearly as much as other quilted jackets. Cotton/Nylon blend should help keep some of fall’s precipitation off your back. Side vents in the rear help with move-ability.
Got a quick hands on with the grey option in a brick & mortar, and thankfully, these aren’t quite as thick as last year’s blanket-like English wool sportcoats. More manageable for the indoors. Both of these have a heathered effect to them, with the “gunmetal” option having elbow patches. Steep in price, even with the 30% off.
A pair of dress slacks that are cut trim but not tight, and come in a nice not-so-normal shade of blue with a Glen Plaid pattern. Lots of “different” going on here, without getting silly. Wish you could get a better idea (or any idea?) of the pattern when you zoom in.
Cheaper than the Classic Glen Plaid option, thanks to the fabric being cotton. Brushed should make it nice and soft. Fall & winter appropriate. Herringbone pattern. Slimmer than the “classic” fit, so know that going in.

WE INTERRUPT THIS SALE POST FOR A POLL:
Check your local Army/Navy surplus first, but these dock peacoats have a lot going for them. Long enough to cover your blazer’s tail, warm enough thanks to the thinsulate, trimmer than most boxy coats, and chest-high pockets that are strategically placed to keep your hands toasty.
The Abingdon dopp in waxed canvas is one of the better in-house accessories J. Crew carries. Their leather goods can often underwhelm, but the one review seems to be positive.
Are UNIQLO’s cordury sportcoats cheaper? Yep. Are the proportions & fit through the sides on the J. Crew better for those of us in the usual height/weight ratio spectrum? Absolutely. Tail isn’t chopped here (UNIQLO… can suffer from that). Nicely contoured through the sides off the rack. Almost completely unstructured. Comes in a hugely versatile shade of grey. Side vents. Non-functioning buttons.
A splurge, but how many scarves are you really gonna use? Plus, cashmere isn’t the worst thing to have wrapped around your neck. Blue and grey plaid. Plenty versatile.
Already on sale, and the WEEKENDPLANS code drops it by an extra 40%. A lot of us fall into the “cashmere scarf? Sure… cashmere sweater? That’s a ton of cash” camp. At least this one is in their slimmer fit. More than a hundred bucks off. Still more than a hundred bucks in price. Doesn’t appear to be final sale?
Already on sale, and it’s FINAL sale, but dirt cheap. A little bulky in terms of fit. Hugely versatile for casual but not sloppy nights out. Expect some tailoring at the sides. Remember, no returns. Unlined back.
The 30% off select reg. priced items / 40% off sale items code WEEKENDPLANS is good through Monday 10/13. Free shipping, no minimum, expires Friday 10/10/14.
