Is this how it happens for everyone? Surely not. Is the final step, the boredom-induced devolution into obsession and madness, the destiny for all who start to put effort into how they present themselves? No. But, many of us have either walked, or are currently on this path. Top Photo credit

need to print and hang at work as a PSA
I think I’m still at Appreciatus-Goodfitis. I have a tailor and am on my way to using patterns, though… so there’s hope yet!
Will I ever make it all the way to Epitimos-Stylus? Probably not… but I can live with that.
Can attest to this.
Prior to this past year, I was that guy in cargo shorts, athletic tees, white socks, and running sneakers. My first real step into the world of men’s fashion/style was reading Jessie’s Put This On website. After a while of trying to emulate, I realized that his impeccable style and my own aren’t necessarily the same… although we both value the same things: excellent craftsmanship, timeless style, and value. Through PTO, I found Dappered, where Joe’s style is more akin to my own. I’m now in the “Tailorus-Sharpinus” phase. Thanks, Joe!
lol! Perfect
Ditto.
And for those yet to discover putthison.com , know that while joe walks you through the basics from a more conservative angle, Jesse thorn (who incidentally has his own NPR show) hits it from the ‘wild side’.
He also does incredible EBay breakdowns…so….
But where does the modern hipster fit in?
He’s wearing brogues, but a singlet and pork pie hat…
A singlet is that gram which was once know as a ‘wife beater’
Saw a guy wearing a tie that was thinner than his lapels; I slashed his tires, broke his windows and stuffed his car full of loud argyle sweaters and bike-toed shoes. Anyone have a connection that can get me an address if I give you his license plate #?
The last one should allude to Styleforum in some way
I haven’t found a tailor. I went into one of the few in town that does men’s clothing, and was told it would be a multi-month wait to get a jacket tailored, and that a two-week turnaround was only possible for a pant hem.
So I just buy Ratio shirts.
Fixed.
Fortunately, I have a tailor in my building, but Ratio’s probably the way to go for shirts anyway. My need for a tailor has mostly been jacket related with the occasional hem.
That’s a different genus altogether…
Agreed. I was part of that counter-culture movement in high school and college, but left before it became mainstream (ironically so) and was labelled as “hipster.”
If you’re interested, you can look up the hipster’s past incarnations with “emo kid” and “ska boy.” And the look had a lot of early influence from the UK punk bands of the ’70s and ’80s, but has evolved quite a bit since then.
Heh, this is my new favorite Dappered info graphic.
The first five steps in this progression are an uncanny reflection of my own style awakening, and most of the style-conscious men I know, as well.
I’m happily riding that Epitomis-Stylus plateau at this point, but I do occasionally feel myself dipping into Narcitryus-Toohardis territory. I don’t own spats or a top hat, but I occasionally wear ascots and boutonniere flowers. I don’t care how anyone else is dressed, but I’m uncomfortable going out without a jacket on.
Would like to see some of the evolutionary forks… the Carhartt/Cabela’s Cowboy, the LL Bean/Orvis archetype, the Happy Hippie Hiker, Flatbrim Rockstars…
I’m in a phase not listed: Needicus-Loseweighticus. That stage where one realizes that he will never look as stylish as he wants if he doesn’t lose weight.
half evolved between the goodfitis and sharpinus. i don’t go to tailors as much as i could.
Where’s the Welldressedus Pauperis? The extinct subspecies that evolved too great a taste for menswear sales, and was easily lured in and eaten by predators.
Where do you live? That sounds ridiculous. I had some pants hemmed today, and they’re ready today.
Pant hems can be done while I wait some places, but there are really only two tailors in town who do men’s clothing and get good reviews, and both have insanely long wait times unless it’s just a hem.
I live in NW WA, north of Seattle — too far north to go to any tailors in the Seattle metro. 🙁
So… you stopped being a hipster because being a hipster was getting too mainstream?
Haha, yeah. Well, there also comes a point in your life when you realize that the band isn’t gonna make it.
He can be anywhere in the last 3. Depends on the hipster.
if you ain’t wearing a top hat and morning coat, you ain’t shit.
Lumbersexuals, the skinny everything, it was on sale, but it doesn’t quite fit right, etc.
I love it! For me there would be a spot before Brois for my military time. 6 years of the same uniform every day really stunts your style growth.
