Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
Nordstrom: Shoe Clearance Event
- Wolverine 1,000 Mile Winchester – $199.96 ($330)
- Kenneth Cole Reaction ‘Send A Letter’ Wingtip – $79.96 ($148)
- Broken Homme’James’ Round Toe Boot – $179.40 ($299)
- Cole Haan ‘Howland’ Penny Loafer – $98.90 ($148)
- To Boot New York ‘Cary’ Chelsea Boot – $269.98 ($450)
- (they’re funky, but… ) Magnanni ‘Algora’ Medallion Toe Oxford – $249.90 ($395)
It’s a clearance event, so sizes are going to be a little more scattered than usual (even on the above picks). Those shin high Wolverine 1K Milers are actually made in China, but they got lots of support over here. (And a heads up, there are a few sizes still at DSW going for $180). Looks like they’ve been sitting at this price for a couple months now. Meanwhile, the Kenneth Cole’s are from the cheaper REACTION line, but they might make for some good, bad weather beaters. And Nordstrom carries Broken Homme? The same Made in the USA brand from the Eliminator? Had no idea. It’s Nordstrom, so free shipping & returns on everything.
Charles Tyrwhitt: $39.50 & Free Shipping No Min.
- Sky mini grid non-iron slim fit – $39.50
- Royal twill grid check non-iron slim fit – $39.50
- Navy Gingham non-iron slim fit – $39.50
Big hat tip to reader Sky for sending in the heads up about this one. Charles Tyrwhitt runs these every once in a while, and when the prices drop to about $40, and shipping is free (usually $9.95), they really are a good deal (see the comments over here). Key is you have to go to: http://www.ctshirts.com/ER85 for the $39.50 & free shipping offer. Available in regular, slim (fits my frame just fine) or extra slim.
J. Crew: “Private” Ludlow Event = 30% off Select Suits
- Ludlow Italian Wool Charcoal Tux Jacket & Pant – $553 ($790)
- Ludlow Suit Jacket in Heathered Navy or Warm Charcoal – $455 ($650)
Check your inboxes. Not sure how/why someone goes about getting a single use code emailed to them, but select J. Crew customers got one a few days back. And speaking of select, it’s only good on select suits. Some basics like their Italian Flannels get the cut, And that Charcoal Tux. Damn. Might end up looking a little too trendy at a standard Black Tie event where everyone is in black rentals? UPDATE: They’re also doing a 25% off select styles promo, for everyone, with the code HEART214. Not a ton in there, but that does make their unconstructed micro-stripe sportcoat dip to $141. Code is good through tomorrow, 2/14.
Club Monaco: Extra 30% off sale items w/ WEARNOW
- Made in the USA Oxford Blazer – $195.30 ($575)
- Grant Houndstooth Wool Blazer – $174.30 ($349)
- Grant Wool Blend Blazer – $174.30 ($349)
- Reversible Vest – $90.30 ($189)
That made in the USA oxford blazer looks pretty fantastic for the warmer months ahead. Blazers are lined in breathable Bemberg too. You can return sale items for original form of payment, but you just have to do it within 30 days. You are on the hook for $5 for the return label.
Sak’s Off 5th: Extra 50% off sitewide
- Saks Fifth Ave. Leather Cap Toe Oxfords – $197.50 ($395)
- Walkover Suede Derby – $103.49 ($259)
- Saks Fifth Ave. Velvet Blazer + Saks Fifth Ave. Loro Piana Italian Wool Blazer = $279.99 TOTAL
- Saks Fifth Ave. Perforated Cap-Toe Lace-Ups – $137.50 ($279)
All of the above “Saks” stuff is from their in house “BLACK” line. Anyone have any experience with that stuff? Seems like there’s potential there. The shoes are made in Italy and the blazers are made here in the USA. Plus, they’re running a buy one get one free suit / sportcoat sale, so you get both blazers for the cost of the pricier wool option (the velvet is $199 on its own). Wool blazer’s description does say “regular” fit, so, it might not look so slim in person. No code necessary on this one. Shipping is $7.99 and returns are steep, with $9.50 getting deducted if you use the pre-paid shipping label.
BONUS Express: 40% off Everything
The Pick: Chambray Placket Signature Polo – $23.94 ($39.90)
No code needed here, and the suede wingtips got the plug yesterday. Now might be the time to drop into a store and pick up a few of their signature chambray placket polos.
BONUS II JCP: 50% off (or more?) Suits & Sportcoats + extra 15% off w/ THANKS15
The Picks: Camel Hair Sportcoat – $84.99 ($200), Claiborne Slim Fit Suit Separates – $127.49
But you might want to check in store, since a lot of brick & mortars are blowing out (with a level of not often seen ferocity) the Wooster / Ron Johnson stuff. That’s not the lowest the Claiborne suit has gone for in the past, but it’s in that ballpark. Full review over here.
Also worth a mention
- Rue La La: The Flash Sale site has a big shoe event going on right now.
- Johnston & Murphy: Free Shipping on orders $50+ w/ PRESDAY
- LastCall: Extra 35% off sitewide. Try the code FRSHIP for free shipping no minimum.
- Macys: Extra 20% off select items w/ PRES
- Florsheim: 20% off new arrivals w/ NEWSPRING14
- Shoes.com: Extra 25% off Sale Styles w/ PRESIDENT. Drops the J&M Tyndall Chelsea to $118.13, and the Larsey Zip to $101.25.
- L.L. Bean / L.L. Bean Signature: 10% off your entire order w/ WINTER10. Yet some customers might get 20% off (seems like a select customers sale, if you’re on their email list, you might have gotten a click-through message)
I think it’s about time I give that Express polo a shot
For those looking for a ludlow code let me know. I got one and don’t plan on using it.
http://slickdeals.net/?sdtid=6668782&sdop=1&sdpid=65804704&sdfid=9&lno=1&trd=www+ctshirts+co+wbr+m+AUSTIN&u2=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ctshirts.com%2FAUSTIN
Arguably a better CT deal- Shirt and tie of your choice for $40 (plus 10 shipping)
How do Charles Tyrwhitt shirts fit in comparison with Brooks Brothers? I wear a 16.5, 33 and that always fits from Brooks. I generally get Extra Slim Fit and then tailor in the sides a tiny bit. I’d like to try Charles Tyrwhitt but I find sleeve lengths and the definition of slim fit differs brand to brand.
I’d say slimmer than BB. i wear a 16.5 35. 42in chest, 33in pant waist. CT Extra Slim has very little extra fabric around the middle for me. I do find the chest on the Extra slims to be almost too narrow for me. In general i’m a big fan of their shirts.
They’re more or less the same fit except the sleeves are slightly wider on the CT shirts. CT only has a few options in my sleeve length so sometimes I end up getting several with the longer sleeves and having them shortened. The shirts I get with the proper sleeve length are the identical proportions in the chest and through the body to the BB in the same size. The CT shirts with the longer sleeves are a 1/4 inch bigger in the chest. I don’t have any BB in that size to compare to though so they might be the same. The only significant difference are the sleeves on the CT shirts are wider.
Edit: I wear 14.5 32 Extra Slim in both.
Thank you sir! Can’t pass up that deal!
If you have a Nordstrom Rack… Go now. They recently sent out 1-30 day old returned shoes to the outlets. I saw TBTNY shoes for under $200 and grabbed a pair of AE Park Avenue’s for $149. That’s right… $149! They have great deals on Cole Haans and magnanni’s, too!
Interesting. I measured a Brooks Brothers and CT shirt the other day and didn’t find any difference in the same size through the chest and body. The Brooks Brothers shirt is a few years old and the CT shirt is brand new. Maybe one of them tweaked their fit.
Kenneth Cole made it onto the Thursday handful? The end of days must be at hand. 🙂
So i think this CT sale is time for me to reup on my standard dress shirts. Thinking about limiting myself to three. Going with the white, navy gingham and maybe the coral gingham? I wonder how that color leans towards the pinker side rather than the red…
I got one of the Saks 5th Black – Silk knit ties over Black Friday. Currently the same price today at $20. It’s pretty nice. Somewhat thin, but that’s what you’ll probably get with silk knits. I’ve worn it a handful of times and gotten good compliments when needing a casual tie.
go bills
Between this and the recent bonobos news, I’m still waiting for a few more horsemen.
Coral gingham doesn’t seem like a standard to me. I’d go white, sky blue (twill, herringbone), navy gingham.
Does anyone have any experience buying from CT in store? They just opened a Chicago store a few blocks from my day-job, and I’d love to check it out, but I’m trying to figure out if these sales (like $39 shirts – obviously free shipping doesn’t apply here) apply at B + M as well as online.
I’ve got one across the parking lot from my office. I may have to go down there on my lunch break.
Just pulled the trigger on my first CT shirt! It’s an extra-slim, Egyptian cotton twill with button cuffs. Here’s to hoping that it’s not too slim or small for my 5’10” and 157lbs (got a size 15). Thanks for the heads up Joe!!
Would these shoes appear on the Rack website as well?
Are you able to return the CT shirts at this price?
If the walk really isn’t bad, where’s the harm in checking it out? – You either buy with the sale in-store (the other sale mentioned- and it worked – was $39 shirt and free tie, plus $10 shipping) or leave knowing exactly what you want to order. I just pulled the trigger for the first time on CT because of this sale, and I’d love to hear about the experience if you do decide to check it out.
Also just pulled the trigger for my first CT – solid lavender slim fit 15.5, 33 sleeve for a 6’1″, 170lbs frame, along with a navy knit tie for free plus $10 shipping.
Awesome thanks! Does anyone have experience with similar deals in the past with CT that are intended as “1 per household”? Before reading the fine print, I had actually already done 2 separate orders w/ 2 free ties. I’d love to order a 3rd or 4th, but now I’m a bit worried about them coming back and canceling the 2nd.
They have a six month return policy EXCEPT for sale items. That said, I have never had any problems making exchanges on sale items outside of the narrower return window (it took me several tries to get the right mix of collar/sleeve/fit, as each is slightly different from fit to fit).
How does the CT fit compare with 1901’s?
I’m a big CT fan, have a bunch of their shirts still in rotation 7-8 years now. I almost LIKE returning things to them; you get a big British English document of apology with sincere distress over their inability to provide in this instance the top-notch service to which I am entitled. No dangling participles, all class.
Can anyone compare the CT fit with 1901’s?
I wear a 15.5-34/35 dress shirt. In Brooks Brothers, the slim fit is perfect (their extra slim fit is too tight on me). When I ordered a Charles Tyrwhitt shirt for the first time in December, I went with the extra slim fit because it seemed to be comparable to the BB slim fit based on measurements. However, the CT extra slim fit in 15.5-34 was too tight in the chest. When deciding what to exchange it for, I looked at their sizing guide here:
http://www.ctshirts.com/Formal-shirts-sizing-guide?cnt=sizing-guides
What I noticed is that the only difference between CT’s slim and extra slim fit is in the waist measurement. For a given neck and sleeve length, both have the same chest measurement and shirt length, but the extra slim has a 2.5 inch narrower waist. Changing from extra slim to slim wouldn’t have helped me. So I exchanged the 15.5-34 extra slim shirt for a 16-34 extra slim shirt (to give myself an extra 2 inches in the chest, where I needed it) and it fits great.
Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope this helps. I love CT’s shirts (I have two now), and think they compare favorably to Brooks Brothers.
FWIW, these sales come up quite frequently. If you plan on ordering a bunch, it might be worth waiting for the 29.95 sale.
It always cycles between:
39.95 per shirt + 10 shipping
39.95 per shirt free shipping
39.95 + free tie + 10 shipping
29.95 per shirt + 10 shipping
I kind of want to buy something from them just for this. Sadly, in this e-comm age communication is at best, perfunctory and at worst, non-existent. Copywriter rant over…
That was my concern. Im looking for the perfect combination (size-wise) to a great basic white shirt. I.e.: slim, extra slim, arm length, etc. Therefore, I wanted to order 2-3 combinations.
Just spoke to CT. The gentleman said this isnt considered a ‘sale’, therfore the 6 months return policy applies.
Touché, haha. With the cold we’ve been having, I try to avoid walking anywhere in the cold we’ve been having here in Chicago, but temps are finally letting up so it’s a good time to go visit some B + M’s.
And you’re right, even if the sale doesn’t work in-store, I can still try things on, see colors and patterns in person, etc., which never hurts.
I’ll keep you posted!
That is very helpful. I have an athletic build (bigger shoulders and chest) and my one knock against the Extra Slim Fit from BB is that it does tend to get a tad tight on the shoulders. I also think their Extra Slim Fit needs to be redesigned because the higher armholes and tighter chest doesn’t go well with the boxy waist. The shirt un-tailored almost appears to make you look boxy (fat).
I’ll take a close look at the measurements and just give it a gamble I think.
I also pulled the trigger on my first CT shirt last week – solid sky twill slim fit spread collar, French cuff with free blue POW silk tie. I’m excited!
how’s the 29.95+10 shipping different from 39.95+free shipping that’s going on right now again?
I bought those Kenneth Cole wingtips a couple months ago. I didn’t really like the brass insets so I returned them. The search for some affordable black wingtip shoes or ankle boots continues.
Its not if you only buy one shirt, but if you are stocking up, then you can save a considerable amount. Also during the $29 event some of their ties are considerably discounted as well. I bought a grenadine for $59, when they are usually $85 (I think).
How was the sizing though?
Not just Kenneth Cole…Kenneth Cole REACTION
Why does CT insist on shortening slim fit shirts? Some of us like having them stay tucked in.
Anyone have experience with the Gordon Rush Cooper or JD Fisk Kol oxfords? I’m looking for a beater shoe for evenings and both are on pretty big sale at RueLaLa.
1901 is trimmer than the nordstrom trim around the waist. Shoulders and chest are similar
Can anyone compare the CT fits to Banana Republic Tailored Slim Fit shirts? Im 6’1 160lbs and the BR shirts in a medium fit me really well. How would that compare out to the CT shirts? Im guessing a 15.5 / 34 extra slim fit?
Doesn’t look like it. If you want to order a pair, try doing the whole AE 2nds thing. I seem to remember some Park Aves for $149 on the list they sent me last week, and definitely some other styles at that price. Not sure when that sale was ending though…
detailed analysis: http://www.shirtdetective.com/charles-tyrwhitt-vs-brooks-brothers/
Wow, this is perfect. Definitely saving. Thanks.
I never even put them on. The brass insets were so off-putting that I knew I didn’t want them as soon as I held them in my hands.
thanks for that
That charcoal tux looks really awesome. It’s a shame that it’s a two button model though.
Don’t know about the Gordon Rush, but I’ve had a few pairs of JD Fisk shoes and they are variable. Sometimes they are amazing and last forever and sometimes there’s a hole in the sole within a month of casual wear. I’d recommend against them on the whole.
Yikes! Didn’t see those before, but I see what you mean when I zoom in. That’s pretty terrible. I wonder if Joe noticed. I’m guessing not.
Anyone heard about Jos A Bank buying Eddie Bauer?
If I have missed it somewhere, my apologies.
http://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/jos-bank-buy-eddie-bauer-825-million-n30246
CT has a measurements chart on their site.
They’re too short for you? I wear their extra-slim shirts and they’ve got plenty of length.
I’m 6’2″ with short legs. I have trouble keeping shorter shirts tucked in, and intentionally shortening shirts just makes sure of that.
Don’t suppose you’d reply to my comment and let me know as well? There’s a CT store here in DC and I’m eager to buy a few shirts if they honor the sales. OR I could not be lazy and just call them.
No problem. I’m not sure when I’ll get around to it, I know I have a busy weekend, but hopefully sometime next week! But don’t hate me if I forget to get back over here haha.
I realized I could have just live chatted a rep. So I reached out and to get the promotion you have to have the 6 digit code at the end of the URLs. So for the shirt + tie combo it’s “http://www.ctshirts.com/default.aspx?q=AUSTIN|||||||||||||||” for the URL, and “AUSTIN” i assume for the code.
Heading over to the dupont store this weekend to pick up shirts.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that, really good to know. I gotta check out how long the promo lasts, and make sure I get in before that!
Would love to grab your code if still available. Thanks!
Weird, my comments keep disappearing from this site.
I finally tried a CT shirt. The smallest one they had in the store (15/33 extra slim) was too big. Not just a little, but way too big. Sleeves too long, too much room in the torso, and too long (tucked). If that’s the “extra slim” I’d hate to see the classic.
What size are you? I get the CT deal in the mail quite often. Thanks.
CTShirts has a 14 day (no questions asked) return policy for sale items. You should be fine – they make (for the price) excellent quality shirts. I think their shirts are the best for anything under $80 USD- especially the non-iron shirts that require little pressing to look sharp. Also, you can get french cuffs and a very slim outline with their shirts.
Only Express has slimmer shirts, and only SuitSupply (IMHO) has shirts that fit in the shoulders better.
Definitely too short. I’m 6’2″ and I have relatively short legs for my height. Every company these days seems to shorten their slim fit. I have MAYBE an inch and a half under my belt.
