As “The Young Garifo” put it in the comments of their Store Wars loss: “I’ve come to realize that Macy’s is like Nordstrom’s little brother that wears way too many graphic tees and crappy jeans but occasionally rocks something fresh.” For whatever reason, you’ve got to do some hunting with Macy’s these days. And the days to do that hunting is almost always during their One Day Sales, when prices bottom out for the most part. Here’s some of the best from their current O.D.S. Items marked with a * are “Web Busters.” In store prices may or may not match up. Selection on all items (especially shoes) in store can vary greatly.
From the trendiest (yet still wearable) Macy’s house brand. LOOK AT THOSE SKINNY LAPELS THERE. Total dealbreaker for some. But it’s velvet. You’re already taking risks. Looks like it has a ticket pocket? Maybe? Also available in a red shade with a contrasting black collar back that’s just… well… good for you if you can pull that look off.
The Macy’s watch department and its prices almost always gets SMOKED by Amazon. But every once in awhile they somehow jump up and bite the big Bezos in the behind. But it’s rare. These fall under that “rare” category. New design, looks great, was just $136 on Amazon with a code that not everyone could use.
Like almost all things at Macy’s, the $650 retail price is laughable (since these things are fused). But low $200s for a slim fit, 3-piece isn’t a bad deal. Calvin Klein fabric is usually pretty decent too. This one is a wool/poly/mohair blend. The Maroon is obviously awfully trendy, but there’s potential with the blue. A warning on the fit: These allegedly fit VERY trim. So, tread carefully if you’ve got some beef on your frame. Meanwhile, for a navy suit in a darker shade with a little more room at the sides, there’s this 2-piece from CK in their normal “slim fit” for the same price.
NOTE: Use TXTCLB to take an extra 15% off the sale price to get the price reflected above. Good on purchases $100+, but there are a ton of exclusions.
Meanwhile, for those who are a little worried about skinny lapels looking out of place where they work (or play)… Michael Kors offers more traditional suits in both layout and fit. They’re not slim fits, but usually they’ve got a bit of taper at the sides. There’s some shoulder padding, but it hasn’t been too awful in the past. A decently made suit that doesn’t take too many risks for $150. Ships free, returns free in store.

Probably the safest play for most guys. A decently trim (but not tight) fit off the rack, lapels that aren’t razor thin, and decent construction for a fused suit. The button stance on KCNY suits are usually pretty timeless too, although some who like the lower slung Ludlow-look might find them too high. Ticket pocket on the lighter grey, and an (alleged? Can’t see it online) pindot pattern on the charcoal. Light grey is a wool blend, while the charcoal just says “wool”. Knowing Macys.com descriptions though, that might mean wool-blend. KCNY is usually all wool or mainly wool. It’s the Kenneth Cole REACTION suits that you want to stay away from, since those are all synthetic.

Simple. Four color combos to chose from. Something to toss in your cart if you’re shy of the $75 free shipping threshold with the code SHIP.
One of the better looking sweaters Macy’s has put out in awhile. Works off the colorblock trend while still remaining muted. Has some marling to the cotton/acrylic fabric.
Couple of all poly quilted jackets that have potential. Nice looking shade to the wool-like fabric and cord collar on the Kenneth Cole Option. Both of these actually ship free, since Macy’s has temporarily lowered their free-shipping threshold to $75 from $99. You’ll need the code SHIP to get it sent your way for free.
Potential at twenty two bucks (before shipping of course). Nice touch with the contrast suede on the keeper loop. The grey + goldish tone nickel belt looks especially tempting.
The Hilfiger Trim Fit Tux is about as low in quality & construction as you’re going to want to go if you’re making the leap to purchasing a tuxedo. Hilfiger suit jacket shoulders can be a little strong, but in the black tie realm that’s not out of place. Bow tie would look better here too. Still going to look better than anyone in a rental, by miles, if you get this tailored up for your body. Also available in a notch lapel, and a slightly awkward looking shawl (button stance looks a little high) collar. Update: See Siepi’s comment. Maybe it’s not so awkwardly high.

Y’know what’s silly? Dropping a quarter of a grand on one pair of sunglasses. Y’know what are really awesome? Persol’s line of folding shades. Man are they someting. $250 something? That’s up to you. But it’s honestly a pretty decent price.
The slimmest brand carried by Macy’s. The charcoal’s description says “wool”, while the wine/burgundy option is a wool poly blend. Just shy of the extra 15% off TXTCLB threshold, but at least they ship free with SHIP.
Honestly stunned that the TXTCLB seems to work on these. Awfully hard to find, and probably the best looking design Timberland has been putting out consistently in the last few years. Use that code for the extra 15% off the sale price. Ships free.
The Retro Traveler line has to be one of the better looking designs Fossil has come out with in recent years. Just enough thickness to it, real casual, sport-influenced. Dirt cheap. Something to mix in on the weekends.
Ending how we started. Ensconced in velvet. Grey houndstooth check with a solid black chesterfield-overcoat-like back collar. Actually might be a solid buy for many. It’s an “Alfani Red” jacket, so chances are the armholes will be a little low. But for sixty? For a holiday party or two?
