Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
Bonobos: Extra 20% off sale w/ FALL20
The Picks: Washed Chino Blazer in Burgundy or Forrest Green – $118.40 ($198), Grey Stretch Cotton Chinos – $46.40 ($88), French Corders in Wine – $78.40 ($125), Nottingham Blazer in Navy – $206.40, or Brown Herringbone English Wool – $222.40 ($368 – $398)
Here’s the thing… if you “Share on facebook” you get 30% off. But… well… Not a fan here of that “share on social media and save money!” thing some brands do. But an extra 20% off sale puts goods that are usually out of reach for most of us in reach. Washed chino fabric on some slightly out-there shades of blazers? Wear em’ with jeans and don’t over think it. Limited lengths in the Robber Barrons, but you could always get them hemmed. Expensive cords, but… RED PANTS (meanwhile, the very brown cords are down to $62.40).
J. Crew: 25% of “Winter Favorites” w/ WINTER
The Picks: Ludlow Topcoat in Camel – $337.50 ($450), Cashmere Scarf – $73.50 ($98),
Slim Merino V – $54.60 ($78)
J. Crew’s new addiction to codes is getting creative. “Winter favorites?” That = “select items” sale. But if you recently got on the “I need to look a little better once I step outside the house” train, and thus can’t wait for end of season sales, this might be worth jumping on. For the scarf + topcoat… wearing those two together isn’t suggested. You want contrast there. Meanwhile, if you’re hooked on the J. Crew “slim” cut of sweaters… any discount is a good discount. Note to other retailers: Cut 10 – 20% off the sides of your sweaters, save the production costs(?) and market them as “Slim”. Everyone wins?
Orient: New Bambinos in stock + 40% off w/ earlyblackfriday
The Picks: Bambino FER2400CN0 – $156.00 ($260), FER2400BW0 – $156.00 ($260)
Like you lucked out at an estate sale, or you ended up with an inheritance piece. Blue or rose gold hands. Vintage looking dials. Nicely done. Just heard from the guys at Orient, and they’re running a 40% off code earlyblackfriday through tomorrow 11/22. 30% is the standard, but 40% is pretty rare these days. Also gets you free ground shipping. Expect an in person review & giveaway sometime in the next week or so.
Club Monaco: 30% off select cashmere w/ CASHMERE30
The Pick: For her: Adele Border Cashmere Scarf – $90.65 ($129.50), For him (or you): Kensington Cashmere Hat – $55.65 ($79.50)
And just like that… November is almost over. If you haven’t even thought about the upcoming gift-giving season, now’s not a bad time to start. Club Monaco cashmere isn’t cheap, but it is super soft, and that scarf is equal parts class as well as on-trend with the color block thing. Might be a safe play when it comes to giving her a little bit of luxury.
J. Crew Factory: 40% off + extra 10% or 20% off w/ EARLYBIRD
The Picks: Thompson Navy Suit Jacket + Pant + Linen Pocket Square = $201.20, Thompson Herringbone Sportcoat + Dot Scarf + Wool blend socks = $124.40
Thompsons dip this low once every… month? Two months? This time you sorta have to game it though. Everything is 40% off (the goofy regular retail price) and by buying three or more items you can knock an extra 20% off that. So if you’re in the market for an affordable suit, consider picking up the suit jacket + pants… and buy a pocket square. Or socks. It drops the price of the suit down to the low $200s. Hard to beat that for a trim off the rack suit like the Thompson. Could they drop further on Black Friday or on Cyber Monday? That’s the gamble.
Also worth a mention
- Rue La La: The membership flash-sale site is running a Brooks Brothers sale. Lots of Madison fits though.
- Christopher Ward: 15% off their popular Trident collection w/ TRIDENT15
- Jack Spade: 20% off all bags, including sale, w/ BAG20
- Ralph Lauren: They’re taking an extra 25% off select goods, and they’re offering free shipping too. That puts their Suede Norbeck boots at $89.99 shipped.
- Allen Edmonds:
Take $50 – $100 off select boots through December
- GANT: They’ve launched their “Seasonal Sale”.
- ASOS: $20 off $130, $30 off $175, and $40 off $200 w/ BAGIT20, BAGIT30 or BAGIT40. Even works on their new ASOS Crafted in collection, featuring English made shoes and jackets.
- Suitsupply: $399 for a Napoli? Hat tip to Morgan over on Threads who found these gems.
IIRC the social media code is just FALL30. I don’t know if they check if you’ve clicked the share link.
They don’t because I used it earlier this morning. I used the last of my store credit and am now done with Bonobos.
I hate the way they want you to advertise for them on FB to get a bigger discount or the one I got the other day was ‘give us emails for 3 of your friends and you can have early access to our black Friday sale’. Their marketing strategy has turned me off so much that I will no longer be shopping there.
Meh, 30% is 30%. No one reads my fbook posts anyway and I’m sure I could just easily delete the post after getting the code.
Not relevant to a sale right now, but slim fit v neck sweaters – nothing beats the polo ones in my opinion. Especially if you can get them on sale at an outlet. Merino, slim arms, slim body, nice colors…. Also I need to distract myself from that Ludlow topcoat.
I know this might be heresy around these parts, but I believe J. Crew has become way overpriced. Even their sales don’t impress me anymore.
Those new Orients are beautiful, but the single bar use of Roman numerals on 3,4(?),6 and 9 I would find a little distracting. I know I would glance at that 4 and think it it is a 3 enough times to make it annoying. In other words, I’m dumb.
Amen.
Or probably set the privacy on it so that only you could see their post(s).
The trick with those “share to save” things is to set the post to be only visible to you — the company doesn’t benefit from it, nobody but you knows you shared, and you still get the benefits of whatever they’re giving in exchange for your share.
Nope, not heresy. They have really jumped their prices, especially on blazers. But I think with certain codes & sales, much of their stuff is still without competition. But… then suitsupply launched their outlet site, and, well, we’ll see.
I honestly hadn’t noticed until now, but you’re right, that is a bit quirky. (and I laughed hard at your last sentence, nicely played.)
Remember, you can choose who sees your posts on Facebook…
Got the Bonobos wine-colored cords yesterday. Had my eye on them for a few months. Hope to pair them with a slim blue chambray shirt, a knit tie, and a navy blazer. That’ll be my holiday party outfit. Any suggestions on a slim chambray that can be dressed up?
i know this is a very firstworldproblem, but shopping at places like JC, JCF, Banana, Gap, etc has become exhausting. you almost always feel like you’re getting boned when they inevitably manipulate the base price and it drops lower than what you thought was a “deal” initially.
i feel like it hasn’t always been this bad? in the last year it seems like you have to play the game even more than ever. it’s slowly alienating me from shopping at these places.
Bah. Looks like it’s kaput. Updated above. Sorry ’bout that Robert.
I don’t think base prices get manipulated all that often. From season to season, things change and new styles go up in price (see those J. Crew blazers, and the new JCF suits). But yeah, it’s a moving target, and I think a lot of us have zones in which we will only then buy (Thompson suits: low $200s for instance)
Suitsupply, what are you doing? Did anybody else peek into the new arrivals to see if there were any more deals? What on earth are those tuxedos??
Oh wow. Most of them look like weird pajamas.
Ding ding ding. This is what I do for all those ad-based discounts.
Jack Spade > all. Trust me.
Make sure to check in store if you have one near by. The in-store clearance rack is actually cheaper than the web, and has a ton of stuff right now.
That wheat Ludlow suit? Under $120 OUT THE DOOR, should you find your size.
These sales are killing me though. I bought a Gap sweater yesterday at 35% off (great!) only to find out today it’s 40%, or 50% off with Gap card (not so great for me). I get a good deal which makes me feel good, but then it kills me when I don’t get a great deal.
J Crew.
For me (tall and lanky), I had to size down to a small and go slim to pull the fabric closer to the body for a more dressed approach.
It’s to create symmtry across the watch face. When you think about it, it makes a lot of sense.
You mean you don’t like the Green Check? I hear that’s what the new bond is wearing.
Does anyone know if that Bonobos wool herringbone blazer is half-canvassed? They highlight that the fabric comes from the same mill as J Crew wool blazers often do (Abraham Mill) and one of their “ninjas” told me that it was “partially fused.”
Yeah, I’m not sure I get the big deal. People who know you probably know you dress well, the advertising comes at a cost to them, an extra 10%. You can always delete the post afterwards.
I recently started purchasing things from Jcrew only if theyre heavily on sale. The most inflated (I feel) i paid for something was 62 bucks for a beautiful shawl cardigan on sale. Jcrew’s quality seems worth it.
Make sure the collar is more sturdy and can hold a tie, I think that will help a lot. I thought I may have seen something that might work on gap’s site? What about BR? Might have to play the code game. Sounds like a legit look though, I like it.
VIVA LA BARREL CHESTED STALLION REVOLUCION!!
PS – this worked for me. Snagged a gingham shirt for $8 after discount and store credit. 🙂
On the subject of suits and stuff, do you guys have anything to say on the topic of practical fully canvassed suits, or do they no longer make anything fully fused in the price range that is the aim?
Because I’ve found a place with Hickey Freeman suits for ~500 but the info I’ve found on fully/half canvassed is so unhelpful with people disagreeing on all sorts of stuff. Or any other brands that might be worth looking at?
Is anyone still waiting on a SuitSupply order from the outlet website to even ship? I ordered last Monday (Nov. 11th) back when the whole thing came about, but I haven’t even received a shipping confirmation yet. I contacted them this past Monday, a week after I ordered, and the rep told me it will ship out within the next couple of days. That’s all he gave me. Still hasn’t shipped as of today.
This is my first experience with SuitSupply and it’s leaving a sour taste in my mouth…although I have the feeling it will be replaced by me salivating over the jacket I ordered once I get it and all will be forgiven. But seriously, SuitSupply needs to take a cue from the Bonobos Ninjas on service.
This happens to me all the time at Gap. Depending on your level of commitment and any possible moral qualms (I usually draw the line at a few days) their customer service is usually pretty quick to amend the difference in price if you ask.
I ordered on Tuesday (12th) for shipment to my local store and haven’t heard anything (also haven’t checked). I’m wearing a Suitsupply suit right now and I absolutely love them. The first and third time I went to the physical store, the customer service was great and only added to an amazing piece of clothing. The second time it was a little lackluster and I got that bad taste you are getting.
But rest assured, if your suits are anything like the ones I already own, it’s going to make for some very happy wearing.
Edit: the Ninjas are awesome, always been more help than I had hoped for
Good to know. This isn’t a big ticket item and it was fair when I agreed to it, so I may save that tip for a future purchase. If it sounds like I’m wimping out on this one…I probably am.
I ordered mine at the same time and received it pretty quickly. In fact, I returned it, and they already have it back. It was a great suit, but the fit was off and I thought better of the impulse buy.
Apologies if someone already mentioned this, but the JCF thompson sportcoat link leads to the socks. They are great socks.
Thanks, man. That’s actually what I was looking at: J. Crew has a nice slim option with one pocket. I’m 6″ and 150 pounds so the slim-small is usually my only option.
Thanks, man. I’ll check your suggestions. And good point on the collar.
Symmetry is great in a form over function sense, but I agree with BA that it could be really confusing at a glance. While I want my watch to look nice, I need it to allow me to quickly read the actual time even more.
I see it like when you’d get posts on FB for people wanting your help for Farmville or Mafia Wars or whatever the games were where you had to recruit your friends. I refuse to do it.
Looks like the JCF Herringbone sportcoat is linking to the wool socks, FYI
Just noticed it as well and agree that it is a little quirky. However, when I saw it, I noticed how clean the face looks. Normally, I find all roman numerals to be overkill and distracting so maybe this system helps? However the “IIII” (4) would bug me to no end. Deal breaker for me but I’m OCD.
Has your Suitsupply suit been delivered yet? I waiting for a review LoL
Did you order shipped to your house, or to store? Wondering how easy the return process was for you?
I had it shipped to my house. The return was pretty easy, I just filled out the form, packed the suit back up, slapped the return label on, and dropped it off at UPS. I haven’t gotten the money back yet, so I don’t know exactly how easy it will be, but so far pretty simple.
For the most part agree, although I did pick up a pair of the italian chino suit pants (just the pants) on sale recently and I’m really impressed with them. Granted $60 on sale for a pair of chinos, but really really nice. I am fatigued by the constant sales though. I’d just rather pay a more reasonable price all year with maybe 1 or 2 bigger sales.
I ordered before the Outlet opening was widely publicized, and my order shipped right away. I am still waiting for shipping confirmation on a second order I placed last Wednesday after the cat got out of the bag.
I’m pretty sure Suitsupply has been overwhelmed by the traffic the Outlet has seen. I did receive an email at some point telling me my shipment could be delayed by up to 5 business days (already passed) due to the unexpected volume of sales. My overall Suitsupply experience has been very positive outside this particular delay, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one.
It’s a sales tactic. Create confusion over what things are truly “worth” and people are more likely to jump at the lower discounts.
I don’t think you should feel bad for it. There is always a better deal to be had somewhere!
Four is almost always represented as IIII on clocks and watches. BenR probably knows why. The other positions are to create symmetry.
I have the older one with the black dial and it’s my favorite watch (first find out about in on this site). Great retro suave look. Makes me instinctively speak with a Cary Grant accent.
Thoughts on a holiday present for a lady…. that cashmere scarf Joe posted above or something like this? http://www.gilt.com/sale/men/designer-scarves-8011/product/148987869-givenchy-signature-knit-scarf
No problem at all!
I love the Orient watches. I even have the Capital (stainless steel), but my problem is thin wrists. Why don’t they make the same styles in smaller diameters? I’d be all over them. Any suggestions on similar stylings/price range from someone who thinks of us thin guys?
I was just in San Francisco, and they have a city ordinance that basically enables the neighborhoods to keep out chain stores. Basically the neighborhood association has to approve before any chain with more than x number of stores can move in. The nice thing is they have all kinds of little independent boutiques that carry their own unique stuff. It makes for really good shopping and the prices in a lot of those stores are far from outrageous.
Here in DC, it’s Gap, Banana, JCrew, etc. Granted, since everyone wants a flagship store in Georgetown, we still have more variety than most cities, (Levis, Bonobos, etc.) but it’s all chain variety.
I looked it up. Nobody knows why some watches use IIII. The guesses are pretty fascinating though, ranging from the Roman God Jupiter, to Louis XIV, to penny-pinching watchmakers in days of yore. I’ll cite these, along with “symmetry”, as the reasons I will from now on be an hour late for for all 4 o’clock meetings.
I received mine today. Not sure the order date. But it was the wool herringbone coat and Napoli grey stripe suit. First experience with suit supply and I’m blown away.
My order from last Wednesday shipped today. You might want to check your order status manually from Suitsupply’s website. I didn’t get an email notification.
Just checked and mine shipped as well! Thanks for following up. I wouldn’t have checked through SuitSupply’s site otherwise and would not have had a clue that it was in transit.
Of course the day I decide to complain is the day it ships out. Weird how it works out that way.
Unfortunately, as I’m sure you’ve observed, the trend with watch sizing is bigger, bigger, bigger. Though 40mm was once (not too long ago) considered on the large side for a sport watch, it is now considered normal or even small for a dress watch. You will have a hard time finding an automatic watch comparable to the Bambino in style and price but smaller sized.
If quartz is acceptable, there is a minimalist style Bulova that is similar to the original Bambino in style and sized at about 38mm.
If you’re after the Roman numerals, this Seiko is super cheap and vaguely similar to the new Bambino. You would want to switch the cheap metal bracelet for a nice leather strap, though.

Buying vintage is another option but it involves a lot more luck and risk than buying new.
Weird EXPENSIVE pajamas.
Thanks, Ben. Not exactly comparable, but maybe I can find something that’ll work from Seiko.
Whoa didn’t even notice that, I also don’t love the font and the beige you are stuck with if you want blue hands
So close to what I want
I feel the same way. I’ve always wanted the white face with silver hands, but now I’m torn
An employee proudly showed me all the crazy tuxes on the upper floor at the SoHo store.
They have greatly expanded their formalwear collection, albeit with weird colors and velvet. I think you’ll be seeing them soon at the online outlet circa April 2014.
And today I got the email from suitsupply saying they have refunded my money. So 5 real days from when they received it, and about a week from when I sent it.
There shouldn’t be any moral qualms, either. I had this happen as well. The very nice CS lady said their policy is that if you see a lower price within 14 days, they will credit you the difference. It took me maybe 5 minutes on the phone to get another 15% off. Only reason it took that long was so she could check that all things were eligible for the new discount.
