IT’S NOT JUST A HANDFUL. IT’S A HOEDOWN.
All right, let’s get on with it. Enjoy the long weekend fellas.
Pertinent Friday updates are found below.
.
J. Crew: Extra 30% off Sale Items w/ HELLO30
The Picks:
- Ludlow Blazer in Charcoal Italian Wool – $209.99 ($388)
- Ludlow Italian Pique Cotton Suit Jacket + Classic Pant – $258.99 ($496)
- Single Button Chino Sportcoat – $131.60 ($218)
- Bowery Oxford Cloth Pant – $48.99 ($88)
- Classic Leather Plaque Belt – $27.99 ($59.50)
Hat tip to “Dappa” in the comments from yesterday, when he predicted the 30% code a comin’. The charcoal blazer is a double vent, in the current personal rotation, and gets lots of use. $210 seems like a steal. The navy is also available in center vent, but sizes are awfully short. The Italian Pique suit is in a summery stone, but a solid deal in the mid $200s. And, surprising to see their new Single button chino sportcoats in the sale section. Well, at least in the khaki-like “light hickory.” Cheaper, but final sale option from last season over here.
Brooks Brothers: Labor Day Clearance Event
The Picks: Madras + Bar Stripe reversible belt – $24.00 ($48), Supima Striped Shawl Collar – $51.20 ($128), Colorblock Trench Coat – $139.20 ($348)
It’s an end of season clearance, so you’re going to see a lot of this lighter, airy looking/clean stuff. That belt might be the biggest winner at twenty four bucks… before shipping. Bold stripes on one side, Madras on the other.
American Eagle: 40% off everything w/ 74693461
The Picks: Varsity Tipped Cotton Sweater – $29.97 ($49.95), 5-Pocket Slim-Straight Jean in Honey – $29.97 ($49.95), AEO Leather Chukkas – $47.97 ($79.95)
Yes, American Eagle. There’s a piece or two every year that’ll be logo free that’s worth a look. Free shipping on all orders as well through Monday. So… y’know… you don’t have to step foot in the AE store in the mall (see #23).
Banana Republic: 40% off w/ BRWEEKEND
The Picks: Holden Single Monk – $84.00 ($140), Herringbone Cotton Vest – $78.00 ($130), Vintage Straight Grey Jean – $53.70 ($89.50), Tailored slim fit gingham – $47.70 ($79.50)
This actually launched yesterday for cardholders but thanks to the exclusions they added overnight (blazers + “BR Picks”) it’s become a totally different sale. Their new plaid blazer? Doesn’t get the discount. Neither does their terrific merino wool v-necks. Hold out for a sale on those. There’s so much stuff excluded (especially thanks to the arbitrary “BR Picks” category) that it seems like half the site can’t have the code applied. Disappointing. There are a few things worth noting though. That vest (for the waistcoat-curious) doesn’t have the usual poly back. All cotton. The single monk’s a nice sleek shape and well under a hundred. And the “vintage straight” fit on those grey jeans seem to be somewhere between a 514 and a 501.
Allen Edmonds Factory Outlet: 15%-50% off Factory-Second Shoes & More
The Pick: Dalton in Walnut Factory 2nds – $199.00
They’re going to be 2nds quality, but worth a look if you’re out of range of AE’s usual price point, and aren’t too picky about scratches and dents. Hat tip to Greg H. for sending in the style tip. Head here to find the Factory Outlet closest to you.
J. Crew Factory: Extra 40-50% off Everything
The Picks: Thompson Sportcoat in Tweed or Herringbone – $118.50 ($198), Slim Merino V-Neck Sweater – $38.50 ($64.50), Thompson Chino Suit Jacket – $81 ($148)
The annual crop of Factory wool-blend tweed-like sportcoats have landed. These can be hit or miss. Some years the quality is outstanding. Others, like last year, some report that the fabric is less than desirable. Meanwhile, the Thompson Chino is down to a very reasonable $81. Would go great with this outfit over here. Free shipping over $100.
Lands’ End: 30% off w/ SHOPNOW & pin 2030
The picks: Made in the USA Jeans in 628 straight or 608 slim fit – $68.60 ($98), Garment Dye Rugby – $40.50 ($58)
Lands’ End has tightened up their frequency of codes, so 30% off everything (except for 3rd party merch) is a good one. More on the jeans and the difference between the 628 and 608 fit over here. The Rugby looks like a muted version of the French Terry rugby from last year. Might want to size down if you’re in between.
Bonobos: Extra 30% off Sale Items w/ DOGDAYS
The Picks: Oxleys Straight Leg in Mint Green – $33.60 ($98), Jack Spade Leather Document Brief – $194.60 ($395)
Selection is all over the place on the Bonobos sale page right now, so you’re best searching by your size. One option that does have a lot of sizes available is the Bonobos oxford cloth “Oxleys” pant in mint green. These pants might be the only reason to miss summer when it finally gives way to fall. That and sundresses.
Nordstrom: New Additions/New Markdowns in Sale
The Picks: Timex “Antiqued” Case 42mm in Black/Silver or Brown/Gold – $34.98 ($70), Transcript Tassel Loafer – $59.96 ($99.95), 1901 Carson Oxford in Grey – $66.96 ($99.95)
Don’t get too excited. This is not half-yearly part II. But, been awhile since most of us took a spin through the Nordstrom Sale Section (Anniversary Sale Fatigue?) and there are some new markdowns lurking in there. That Timex duo has been marked down further, and the Transcript Tassel Loafer is a steal at $60. A warning: don’t believe the “runs small order the next size up” note on the Nordstrom site. They don’t run small. More over here.
EXPRESS: 40% off everything
The Picks: Corduroy Blazer – $118.80 ($198), Contrast Shawl Collar – $41.94 ($69.90)
This is going on in-store as well, so if you don’t want to pop for the awfully steep shipping ($8.00), then there’s your option. Free shipping kicks in at $125.
Also worth a mention: Kenneth Cole is offering $50 off $150+ w/ LD913. Bloomingdale’s has launched a Big Brown Bag sale, and you can take an extra 20% off most sale/clearance with TAKE20. Last call is doing an extra 25% – 50% off everything, but it looks like it’s mostly 25% on the guy’s side. Original Penguin is doing 30% off everything w/ LABOR30. Urban Outfitters
is taking an extra 30% off all sale items through the weekend, no code necessary. Discount happens at checkout. Macy’s is doing an extra 15%-20% off with the code DEALS.
J. Crew is doing 25% off all denim, but that ends today. You have to think they’ll launch some other promo tomorrow. (Update: Yep.)
Hi Joe,
Is the Allen Edmonds Seconds sale the labor day sale you are referring to? I ordered some seconds this week thinking they would give me the labor day price and took it for what it was. Now I am wondering if they didnt give me the labor day prices because I paid the price on the list and Daltons on there is still 299.
Thanks!
big, green, ass. AH.
Glad I jumped in on the 40% for card holders at BR. There were zero exclutions at the time. I did pass on a really nice blazer, now I am second guessing that decision…
Anyone try that brown herringbone from JCF yet?
I apologize if there is an article devoted to this topic somewhere else, but what are everyone’s thoughts on single monks vs. double monks? I think double monks look great and I’d love to pick up a pair at some point, but the single monks just don’t do it for me.
Any thoughts on whether to get the tweed or herringbone sport coat? I’m looking for a foundation piece, so I need versatility. I’m also a huge fan of herringbone.
Some of those lucky few could potentially score the J.crew’s Navy Italian wool Ludlow blazer (the older version Joe always talks about) for around $209 (or even $180 with 40%) if they put 30% on sale items back again this weekend, providing that they don’t bump up the price from the current $299.99 sale price. That’d be ridiculous if anyone gets it for $180 since that never went on sale to that degree. Damn.
i used to feel that way, until i saw the allen edmond franciscans. just depends on the shoe i guess. but yeah on average doubles are edgier and sexier
I have a pair of both. Meermin Double Monks and Allen Edmonds Norwich both in brown. I think single monks are more versatile and more casual than the doubles. The Norwich is a plain toe so something like the Franciscan would be a bit less versatile I imagine.
Simply put though, just get what you like, everyone has their own tastes.
Daltons are $199 during the sale. You should see if they can help you out.
Love the foresight. http://www.jcrew.com/mens_special_sizes/tall/sportcoatsouterwear/PRDOVR~21509/99101900358/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~P_new_to_sale%7C1%7C%7CP_priority%7C0~20+16+4294967186~15~~~~~~~/21509.jsp
Didn’t even know these had drifted into the sale section. Charcoal as well with more sizes.
Do you have the Meermin classic line? If so, much was it in TOTAL and how long did it takes to ship? is it one size down from AE? Lastly, did you get hit with a brokerage fee?
You will probably pass. I seen that herringbone in stores and the quality is ehhhh. 70% Wool and 30% Nylon. You can totally see/feel the nylon.
Received mine last week. Only other tweed jackets that I own are Harris Tweed, so this may be an ill comparison. Anyways, the weave is tigher, thinner, but less rough and doesn’t lose the substantialness (is that a word?) of the fabric. The fit is spot on. Overall I am pretty pleased with it. WIsh I knew more about the prvious jackets to give you a better comparison.
Wish I could help but I snagged them off ebay for $200 NIB. Size didn’t fit the seller.
I have alphas and they all say Alpha Slim on the hip. How do these compare to the new cuts?
Has anybody looked into the JCP Claiborne herringbone blazer? It’s not on sale yet but could be a good alternate if caught on sale and stacked with additional discount code. It’s a bit darker than the to the JCF Tweed. I believe the online calls it black and white so that could be a turn off for some.
$209.99 it will be. With 30% off code, hello30. They could still jack up the price overnight, but as for me: must resist the temptation from buying the charcoal one….. I can do this!
Pretty sure they’re unisex: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/mens-watches?dept=8000001&origin=topnav&cm_sp=Top%20Navigation-_-Men-_-Watches#category=b60140032&type=category&page=1&color=&price=&brand=6818&instoreavailability=false&lastfilter=brand&sizeFinderId=0&resultsmode=&segmentId=0 42mm in diameter too.
I actually bought the one with the black dial during the anniversary sale, and it definitely leans much more masculine than feminine.
I actually got this 3/2 roll Ludlow from a JCF store but at 30% it goes down to $175. Decent selection of sizes too.

last seasons was 70/30, maybe they did change it. Last seasons i absolutely was not a fan of.
Here’s a 3/2 that comes down to $175. More size selections too for Navy. http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/sportcoatsandvests/Ludlowsportcoats/PRDOVR~42324/99102505026/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~P_saleprice%7C1~20+16~90~~~~~~~/42324.jsp?bmForm=search_topnav&bmFormID=k3dRv6T&bmUID=k3dRv6U&bmIsForm=true&bmPrevTemplate=%2Fmens_category%2Fsportcoatsandvests%2FLudlowsportcoats%2FPRDOVR~42324%2F99102505026%2FENE~1%2B2%2B3%2B22%2B4294967294%2B20~~P_saleprice%7C1~20%2B16~90~~~~~~~%2F42324.jsp&bmText=searchTerm&searchTerm=16563&bmSubmit=findIt&findIt=GO&bmHidden=PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441812509&bmHidden=FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032653
I checked out American Eagle and Banana Republic in the mall this week, Warning about the jeans at AE – I think they are the ones that the advertise as bleeding dye like crazy so the fade may be faster than you think.
There was a nice waxed cotton fall jacket there for $60 as well.
Buy 1 ($25) get 2 free cedar shoe trees at Jos A Bank.
I stopped by a BR outlet store at State Line NV and they had 50%off everything. Picked up a Heather Grey suit for$50!
Uniqlo is have a decent sale as well. $10 off a lot of stuff.
That seafoam wrapped set of glutes continues to crack me up.
Anyone have any experience with the Am.Eagle leather chukkas, or the suede one’s for that matter? I’be been looking for a pair for fall and those are in my price range. Do they carry them in the store? As much as I would hate to go in there, I have wide enough feet that ordering shoes online is usually a disaster.
I’m debating between the 2-button Thompson http://factory.jcrew.com/mens-clothing/suiting/PRDOVR~47226/47226.jsp?color_name=navy or 3-button Ludlow on sale http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/suiting/PRDOVR~16563/99101775669/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~P_saleprice%7C1~20+16+4294967201+4294950391~90~~~~~~~/16563.jsp in navy.
Those are very different shades of navy. Does anyone know if the Thompson navy is the same as the navy color Joe reviewed at: https://dappered.com/2012/07/in-person-j-crew-factory-thompson-worsted-wool-suit/
If you have a Gap/BR card, you can also get 15% off shoes at Piperlime with code “silver13”.
Upon examination, there’s an AE Outlet store within reasonable driving distance.
My fate is sealed.
That’s the one. It looks lighter online than in person, but it’s still not a super dark navy. That said, the review is a bit old, so they might have changed fabrics since that review. But the pics online are the same.
Do the Ludlows tend to fit along the lines of the JCF Thompson? I’m thinking about a Ludlow blazer, but it’s final sale, so want to make sure I get the sizing right.
And they’re half-canvassed, correct?
Thanks!
Brooks brothers shawl cardigan only available in XXL!
use promo code SAVETWTY to bring them down to $20
Alphas have a lower rise, fit much like 511s. These new regular tappered have a higher rise and are roomier in the thighs but taper nicely.
Called up J Crew to check the return policy on the ludlow (it’s final sale) and the rep offered to give me a “one time” option to return it if it doesn’t work out… something to consider if you’re on the fence
My factory seconds had the hideous flaw of a dark brown mark (looked like tanning or dyeing material was dripped or brushed on) high up on one side of one boot.
Oh, how will I ever live with that…
Actually braved the embarrassment of being a 28-year-old man in an AE store this week and ended up picking up the Honey colored jeans at AE. The fit and color are great, but there weren’t a whole lot of other great jean options for anyone out of high school (not too surprising). To add to the experience, I was asked by the teenage girl that rung me up if I “had a wife or anything,” which was funny both because I am easily 10 years her senior and “play for the other team.” In hindsight, she may have been a little offended when I burst out laughing at her inquiry….
JCF just added free shipping to its sale w/ code LABORDAY.
What kind of belt can you wear with grey suede and dark jeans. I notice the lands end picture and of course they are not wearing a belt. So is that the solution, no belt?
FWIW, some of the Bonobos Oxleys variants are now at 26.6$ shipped after 30% off code Dogdays.
I was at the Allen Edmonds outlet in Destin, FL yesterday and spotted AE for Brooks Brothers loafers (Presidio) for $109.99. available in Walnut, Brown, and Black. I bought the Walnut in impulse and am now mulling over calling and ordering the other 2 colors.
they are not as nice as the AE Partiots but well worth 109.99

Any belt will do, but I’d probably wear either a standard black belt or a colored web belt (since both the jeans and shoes are dark).
note.. the brooks version does NOT have a rubber sole.
