PALE LEE OH-NO!? Here’s the deal: by presenting this article on the scientific veracity of the Paleo Diet , I am, in no way whatsoever, expressing any implied opinion on the merits of the diet itself. Nope, there is no Dappered counsel advising me to make this statement. I just don’t want to be taken to any number of woodsheds in the comments. For more analysis of the book in question, there’s this. Meanwhile, for those of us who battle binge snacking on a somewhat, ahem, regular basis, this might not help us win the battle, but at least we can understand why it’s happening.
NICE THREADS: Once again, Dappered threads steps up with a well-timed, in person fix for lined jackets. If a jacket is lined such that it is unwearable in warm weather, it lessens its perceived value. Which makes this DIY jacket un-lining thread pretty handy. This post from PutThisOn was the inspiration for the thread.
CAR PORN OF THE DAY: Want. Badly.
VERY IMPORTANT UNDERGARMENT OF THE DAY: Hey guys, you MMA dudes, you Krav Maga beasts, you men in blue, you under-appreciated soldiers serving in harms way, this is for you. Its owner claims “It is a bullet resistant groin protection device.” It is marketed as the Armored Nutshellz. You are welcome.

I think this post on MDA explains a lot of what’s wrong with “PaleoFantasy”: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/is-it-all-just-a-paleofantasy/#axzz2T0KQi6KV
Either way, I still think that a paleo diet is 100x healthier than the 1500 calorie a day diet you posted here a few months back.
The bickering about paleo diets is just frustrating most of the time. Unless you’re willing to saddle yourself with the bad science and bizarre claims of paleo extremists, just say that you eat fewer processed foods and try to exercise.
It wasn’t a 1500 calorie a day “diet”. It was just one day.
Arnold Schwarzenegger laid out a high protein low carb diet in 1977, it works. Go buy one of his books http://www.amazon.com/Arnold-ebook/dp/B007USA6RC/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1368299976&sr=8-15&keywords=Schwarzenegger or http://www.amazon.com/The-Encyclopedia-Modern-Bodybuilding-ebook/dp/B007US9NA8/ref=pd_sim_kstore_1
All the popular diets of the last 20 years take Arnold’s diet and run into stupid land with it.
I have had no hayfever, lost a good amount of weight, feel healthier, more mentally focused and more mobile than at any time in my adult life.
I don’t need anyone to tell me I am right or wrong to have been paleo for three years. I will be my own judge..
Most of the arguments regarding Paleo come down to the terminology. It should be called something else, but it’s too late for that. Doesn’t make much of the principles invalid. It’s a good baseline diet for people to use to get healthier. Then they can slowly re-introduce the excluded foods and see how their body handles them (gluten, dairy, etc.).
I’ve been eating “Paleo” for the past few years with great results. I don’t eat low-carb, I love jasmine rice, and can handle dairy perfectly fine. I like the Robb Wolf approach of “Paleo” that is macronutrient-agnostic.
Mark’s Daily Apple isn’t exactly objective on paleo, though. As an MN student right near the U of M, I have seen Dr. Zuk speak on the very subject.
A post about diets and cars? How fitting. I detailed my car today, which means I have no need for a diet at the moment. I burned like 2k calories detailing that damned thing, and remembered why it is that I love detailing my car right up until the part where I actually detail it.
I’m pretty leery of a site that purports to rebut a critic then immediately tries to sell you something.
I was leery of MDA for the same reason at the beginning, but I’ve found it to be more than earnest over time. Mark walks a fine line and he knows it.
That’s certainly easier. Doesn’t mean you need to throw the baby out with the bathwater, though. I regard someone who sets up a straw man to “debunk” and then writes/sells a book about it as just as intellectually lazy as the extremists, only a bit more insulting.
People have Gluten allergies, we weren’t meant to eat wheat then etc etc. Or peanuts…which are legumes.
I personally try and keep my carb intake quite low and eat lots of meats/fats/greens and I’m about 190lbs around 10% BF without doing much interval training at all.
I will never understand why people want to use the term “paleo”. What’s the point? Trying to eat like paleolithic man is impossible, and the scientific reasons behind it are faulty. The lingo of Paleo/Caveman/Primal diets reek of fads and hype. If you really don’t want to claim that modern humans should eat the same diet as we did 10,000 years ago because it’s superior for our bodies (and there’s no science to back that assertion), then pick another name.
It’s just a name, dude. It picks out a certain eating ethos. It’s probably not ideal and/or technically correct and maybe there are better words for whatever specific iteration you want to look at, but it picks out a particular range of possibilities. And that helps when you have a conversation.
It kind of bugs me that it “reeks of fads and hype”, but at the end of the day I’ve come to terms with it and just don’t really care that much.
In my wholly unscientific study of “how well does it work for people I know” paleo seems to be pretty darn effective
Is that Sarah Jessica Parker she’s photobombing? What THE FUCK is she wearing?
