Macy’s One Day Sale Picks – March 26 – 27, 2012

As “The Young Garifo” put it in the comments of their Store Wars loss: “I’ve come to realize that Macy’s is like Nordstrom’s little brother that wears way too many graphic tees and crappy jeans but occasionally rocks something fresh.”  For whatever reason, you’ve got to do some hunting with Macy’s these days.  And the days to do that hunting is almost always during their One Day Sales, when prices bottom out for the most part.  Here’s some of the best from their current O.D.S..  Items marked with a * are “Web Busters.”  In store prices may or may not match up.  Selection on all items (especially shoes) in store can vary greatly.  And yes, these sales do last two days.

NOTE:  Looks like there’s a $10 off $75 code floating around out there: X192B6SU28 … Doesn’t appear to be a single use code.  Who knows when it expires.  Prices below don’t reflect that extra $10 off since it could evaporate.

UPDATE:  Try TXTCLB for 15% off orders of $100+ .  Hat tip to Redford in the comments.

Michael Kors Linen Suit in Natural or White – $199.99* ($495)
Keeping cool under the owl eyes of TJ Ecklberg.
Keeping cool under the eyes of TJ Eckleberg.

Michael Kors suits are usually a step up in quality from Alfani Red when it comes to construction and feel, and while not super trim, they usually do have a bit of a fitted silhouette   Most will still need some extra tailoring done on the sides of the jacket.  7″ drop on these, so subtract seven inches from the jacket size to get the off the rack pant waist (ex: 40R = 33 waist).  Hems are unfinished so you can get whatever break you want at your tailor.  Good size selection, but 38R are gone in the Natural.  The white suit comes with a vest.  3-piece white linen?  How very Gatsby.

Bar III Wool Suit Separates in Blue or Light Grey – $215.98 ($550)
Grey guy looks like he'd blow over in a stiff breeze.

Probably the steal of this O.D.S.  Suit separates from Bar III in wool, two colors, and right around $200 if you use that extra $10 off coupon.  A word on Bar III:  these things usually fit REAL slim.  A nice alternative to the J. Crew Factory Thompson suit separates if those don’t float your boat.

Bar III Slim Fit Peak Lapel Suit – $223.99 ($595)
Size shown: 38. The 31 waist was a squeeze.
Size shown: 38. The 31 waist was a squeeze.

Also from the in-house Macy’s line Bar III but a true suit with a 7″ drop.  Really well reviewed, the peak lapels are extremely subtle, and there are lots of sizes at post time.  Extra 20% off comes once you drop it in your bag, and the $10 off coupon gets it down to $213.  Ships free too.  Close up of the fabric here.

Calvin Klein Slim Fit Notch Lapel Suit Separates – $239.98 ($650)
"Now dip, baby, dip"
“Now dip, baby, dip”

The retail price on suits at Macy’s can be crazy high ($650?  For a fused suit?) but with sales they drop into the tempting category for those on a sub $300 budget.  This one is a slim fit from Calvin Klein (although the fit sure looks generous on the model).  Suit separates again here, so you get to choose what pant size and jacket will be paired together.  That’s a must for guys with body types that don’t fit into standard drop-sizing on suits.

Hilfiger Double Gusset Portfolio – $128.99 ($250)
Rod topped.
Rod topped.

Looks like Hilfiger is getting back into the retro inspired prep luggage thing.  Canvas sides and (suspect looking) leather on this brief.  Might take a bit to break in that leather and knock the shine down?  16.25″ wide.  Also available in a more standard looking top zip slim brief.

INC Albert Linen Blend Blazer – $79.99* ($119.50)
Also available in an eye piercing blue and a softer green.
Also available in an eye piercing blue and a softer looking green.

Haven’t seen this one in person yet, but it appears to be the 2013 version of the Linen/Ramie blazer INC had last year (which was a real solid value).  It should be very lightweight.  Breezy.  Hacking pockets.  Lapels look real slim.

Perry Ellis Cotton/Poly Woven Belt – $18.99* ($39.50)
Some color without getting crazy.
Some color without getting crazy.

One of those free shipping balance tippers.  If you’re close to the $99 threshold, maybe worth a look.  Just those four colors to pick from.

Bass Buckingham – $79.99* – $99.99
Tons of colors, but few are on sale at Macy's.
Tons of colors, but few are on sale at Macy’s.

Check Amazon first.  Only a few colors are at the web buster price on Macy’s, and shipping is a killer.  (But that $10 off code sorta gets you shipping for free).  Basic buck shape.

Cole Haan Air Kilgore – $129.99* ($178)
I can tell you're thrilled.
I can tell you’re thrilled.

As simple as a black lace up gets.  Equipped with Nike Air for cushioning.  Goes for $168 through Nordstrom.

Hilfiger Shawl Collar – $51.99 ($98) | Cable Crew – $40.99 ($79.50)
Careful with sizing.
Careful with sizing.

Even though these are web busters, might be best to keep an eye out for them in-store?  Hilfiger stuff has a nasty tendency to run real big.  So sizing down might be necessary.  Cotton.  Extra $10 off code drops them into prices that are worth considering.

Dopp Canvas & Leather Duffel – $175.99 ($220)
Bit of a retro look.
Bit of a retro look.

More dressed up looking than the Flight bag from Frost River, but no word on the dimensions.  Quality?  Who knows. Says it’s imported.  Looks good online, but most likely a pass at $176.

UPDATE:  ebags has it at over 3100 cubic inches.  They also have it at $164.79 w/ free shipping.

DKNY Jersey Blazer – $77.99 ($149)
Barney Stinson's hoodie.
Barney Stinson’s hoodie.

It’s a sweatshirt!  It’s a blazer!  It’s… well it’s sorta both.  More over here.

Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Leather Sneakers – $66.99 ($85)
Leather side panels instead of suede or canvas.
Leather side panels instead of suede or canvas.

Down to $57 (plus shipping) with the $10 off code, which is an awfully decent price.

The current Macy’s One Day Sale ends today, Wednesday 3/27/13.

Bout that Mexico 66…it is a nice shoe (anything onitsuka gets you points in my book) but the Ultimate 81 is a much nicer shoe and is always on sale on amazon and at 6pm.com! Do it! http://www.6pm.com/ultimate-81

Anyone know about the armholes on the Bar III suits? Looks tempting, but a little worried the armholes might be too low.

armholes are high. slim fit too.

Seconded. Good-looking shoes, reasonably comfortable, tastefully low-key. I’ve been wearing them for several years now, my current favorite is the LE in gunmetal perforated leather with birch trim. Great-looking color combo, and I find the all-leather version is a bit nicer overall than the nylon ones.

Seconded, perfect fit off the rack, no tailoring needed. Armholes nice and high.

The armholes on the one I got last year were great. The arms themselves, though, were too small for my upper arms!

What do you think of the charcoal colored Bar III? The light grey is a little too light on my eyes.

I wear a 31 waist on the Banana Republic Tailored Slim Pants and Bonobos Weekday Pants and a 38 Jacket fits but is snug if I flex. Should I move up to a 40 with the Bar III suit separates and do the pants on the 7″ drop suit run small?

I picked up those Cole Haan’s for my wedding next month.

About to pull the trigger on the Bar III light gray wool jacket. Quick question – I usually wear 38s, but have wanted to follow the diapered advice on getting a suit one size smaller. Is this the suit to do it? I’m skinny, but I may not be THAT skinny!

  12. Arnaldo Castillo says

I have the Navy Pindot suit as well. I can agree with the armholes being high. I have tried some of the other Bar III suits and own a sportscoat from the brand. Armholes are high as well

Hi, I’m looking for a place to buy slim fit T-shirts as I’m planning a vacation and will spend the day outside in the hot sun. It’s hard to find slim fit T’s that are not for teens, I’m in my 30’s and don’t wear them that often. Don’t want anything that just looks like an undershirt either.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Mossimo’s athletic fit t’s are pretty good. Find them at target

This company for a long time didn’t do online orders, but it would seem they have come around.

They have very nice clothes that fit pretty well off the rack. The only issue is that they only have stores in NYC and California. Some kind of goofy clothes, but a lot of really sharp items as well. Let me know what you think, Joe.

Bought the two suits Joe linked above. Went with a 40R and 32/32 pants. I figure I can size down to a 39/31 much easier than sizing up.

  19. Jackson says

    March 28, 2013 at 8:15 AM

I’m also on the skinny side, but the 38 Bar III fit pretty good off the rack. A little loose in the waist, but the shoulders hugged perfectly. Sizing down to the 36 was just too tight. My experience is with the blue pin dot peak suit and not the separates, but assuming that sizes are standard across lines, this should hopefully ring true for the blazer as well.
