Sales that deserve some attention when heading into the weekend. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up the Friday Handful. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
.
Macy’s: Men’s Private Sale – Extra 25% off $100+ with code AUGUST

The Picks: Bar III Navy Peak Lapel – $217.49 ($595) | DKNY Charcoal Plaid – $277.49 ($650)
The retail price on the fused suits Macy’s carries is always astronomically high, but the quiet code AUGUST takes an extra 25% off these two already on sale suits. That drops both to price levels that are extremely low for these two particular models.. The Bar III is as low as it’s ever been, and it’s now more than $100 off when it made the top 4 for affordable navy suits. Mini review over on that post. Haven’t seen the DKNY in person, but DKNY suits tend to be a step up in quality from Alfani RED/Hilfiger trim fit. Plus that plaid looks like it could be highly handsome in person. Code works on most men’s purchases $100 and up. Try VIP20 for 20% off under $100. Exp. 8/12.
Jackthreads: The poor man’s Bell & Ross

The Picks: : BREED Gunnar Watch – $69.99 ($295)
Breed? That was a Nirvana song right? It’s also apparently a watch company. They’ve got some odd designs to say the least, they occasionally use the bearded J. Crew model in some of their shots, and their Gunnar line is a surprisingly strong feeling, flight-dial inspired square/cushion case powered by Swiss quartz. I was more than pleasantly surprised when this came out of the box. There’s some good weight to it and it looks much better in person. The strap is outstanding. Thick, but flexible. A warning: It’s big. 44mm without the crown. Also know the one I received (which I’m wearing now as I type) has a few dings to the paint on the inside of the case. There’s usually a reason merchandise ends up on these flash sale sites…
GAP: 30% off entire purchase with GAPFRIENDS

The Pick: Cotton/Nylon Trench – $82.60
Haven’t caught this in person yet. But if they’ve been following big brother Banana Republic’s lead, then there’s real potential here. 60% cotton and 40% nylon will keep the water from soaking in, but it still should feel more like cotton than poly. Ships free of course. Code expires 8/12.
Frank & Oak: The Linen Shop

The Pick: Linen Pocket Square in “Duke” or “Pavement” – $15.00
Remember in the glory days of Gilt when everything would sell out within the first 5 minutes? Okay, maybe GILT is still like that, but Frank & Oak fans are just as rabid and quick to the deal. Shipping is free if you’re part of the “hunt club” ($45 pre authorized purchase each month unless you opt out by the 5th… it’s a bit sketchy) or $6.00 fixed. More on Frank & Oak from Sabir at MensStylePro over here.
Club Monaco: New Summer Sale plus free shipping

The Picks: Aimon Seersucker Jacket – $99.00 ($329) & Trouser – $99.00 ($149.50)
Featured in Esquire not too long ago, this is one of those suits that the pieces can easily be split up and worn on their own. Slate grey seersucker that’ll keep you cool but won’t look all southern dandied out. Lots of jacket sizes left for now, but the pants have gone fast. Also worth a look from the sale section: The Mortimer sportcoat for $79, the Bailey Viscose/Linen/Cotton V for $29, and this wide shawl collar cardigan for $29. Sizes will probably move fast on these. Free Economy shipping “for a limited time.” (warning: it defaults to the $5 option.)
Also worth noting: Lands’ End is doing 25% off everything plus free shipping with RMN25FS and 8913 (hat tip to Samuel in the comments) previous code gets you 25% off and free shipping at $50 w/ PETUNIA and pin 2930 (exp 8/13). Express is doing a buy one get one 50% off everything plus $25 off $50 and $50 off $125 with 1706.
Hey Joe,
How does the Bar III compare to the navy J crew Factory Thompson? Thanks.
Hi,
is there any work around to order at Macy’s without an U.S. credit card? I am currently visiting Chicago and have only European CCs.
Best, Mike
That DKNY suit is also avalible in solid charcoal (for a little less).
Go into Brick & Mortar and purchase a macys gift card. With the card, u can purchase in store or online…
Land’s End actually has 25% of everything plus free shipping no minimum with RMN25FS and pin 8913. Expires 8/13
You could purchase one of those prepaid Visa/American Express gift cards at a convenience store and use that to order, unfortunately you’ll end up paying a couple bucks in convenience fees but it may be worth it to you.
They’re not too similar. The Factory Thompson is a worsted, rougher texture that’s a little lighter. Notch lapels too. The Bar III is a more business ready, smoother, navy that’s not super dark… but darker than the Factory Thompson. Peak lapels on the Bar III as well.
I prefer the factory thompson, but for those who are in suits 3-5 days a week, I could see them preferring the Bar III.
Nice! Updated above.
Can anybody speak to the quality of the other Bar III suits? Some of them (like the charcoal mentioned by Will) are laughably inexpensive. The Charcoal and one or two others are $112.49 by my math.
Can anybody speak to the quality of the other Bar III suits? Some of them are exceptionally inexpensive with this promotion.
I noticed some of the Bar III suits are not labels “slim fit” are they truly not slim fit or just a false the description of the product?
Macys currently has a promo in stores for 25% off purchase of $100+.
I didn’t know about it and my total was like $99. The sales rep convinced me to buy a candy bar to get over $100 and used a flyer she had at the register to scan for the promo.
I have the charcoal extra slim fit (ordered as separates) and I love it. Both the fit and quality (in my opinion) were better than the J. Crew Factory Thompson. I did have to size up the pants to a 33w x 32l (normally wear 32 x 32) but other than that it’s great.
Pulled the trigger on the regular slim fit (not extra slim) blue with peak lapels mentioned above. The 7″ drop worries me since I only ordered a 5″ drop with the separates (and usually do a 6″ drop with my normal measurements), but hopefully the fact it’s not extra-slim will still allow me to wear it.
Only the ones labeled “slim fit” are slim fit, I figured this out trying the suits on at a brick and mortar
Joe, can you elaborate on what you mean by saying those who are in suits 3-5 days a week might prefer the Bar III compared to the Factory Thompson? Are you saying that it is more comfortable, or a better fit?
And also, when you say it is more ‘business-ready’ compared to the Thompson, what do you mean by that?
Can you elaborate on why you prefer the Thompson as well?
I just ordered a Thompson, but could still return it in lieu of the Bar III, so I’d like to hear your comparisons/feedback so I can make a solid choice.
Thanks!
I think the Bar III is more white collar ready. Not that the Factory Thompson isn’t. Smoother wool, deeper color, that kind of thing. Something you’d expect to see in a high rise. But again, the Thompson would be just fine there.
I like the thompson because the shoulder padding was a little less, it’s cheaper when on sale, and I liked the texture of the wool. That, and I’m a notch lapel guy when it comes to suits.
For those of you that live near a DSW they have an additional 30% off all clearance items all this weekend. scooped up some great stuff yesterday! The Macy’s 25% works off almost everything except EDV items. aka white leather jack purcell’s I’ve been waiting to jump on (from $70, to $52). Good luck!
Any chance you could link that charcoal? I can’t seem to find it.
Zara is having a great sale. If you have one local to you, stop in. Many of their ties (which I usually think are a bit overpriced for what they are) are down to like $6 or $9, some of the blazers are down to $40, and tons of fall-ready pants are about $25. Worth checking out.
