Macy’s One Day Sale Picks, July 13 – 14

Macy’s One Day Sale Picks – July 13 – 14, 2012

As always, it’s incredibly tough to peg when Macy’s will launch a One Day Sale.  Sometimes a month and a half will go by between them, sometimes only a few weeks will pass.  One thing is certain: These are usually sales worth paying attention to.  The one-day sale prices are some of the best mark downs in the retail industry.  Here’s some of the best from the One-Day-Sale which runs Fri. July 13 – Sat. July 14.  Items marked with a * are “Web Busters.”  In store prices may or may not match up.  Selection on all items (especially shoes) in store can vary greatly.
.

Michael Kors Sky Blue Check Dress Shirt – $29.75* ($59.50)
New arrival from Michael Kors

Michael Kors has to be one of the last contemporary brands at Macy’s to NOT offer a slim fit option.  They’re not blanket huge, but they’ll need tailoring.  Good news is that they don’t have any of the flimsyness you’ll feel with cheaper options.  It’s a bit of an investment once you consider the tailoring charges, but it’s a great shirt for summer as well as brightening up your darker suits, say charcoal, come fall.  Blue checks aren’t a solid like a gingham, but instead a fine stripe glen-plaid like pattern.  Also going for cheap during the O.D.S.:  The blue stripe and blue mini tatersall Kors shirts.

Alfani RED Navy Suit Separates – $219.98* (for the pants and jacket)
Off the rack size shown at left: 38R

Perpetually on sale since they’re a Macy’s house brand.  This is about as low as a trim fit department store wool suit is going to get in this market.  And Alfani RED has improved in the last few years.  The arm holes could still be a bit higher, but the fabric and the feel of how the suit has been put together is better than it was in the past.  Still didn’t make it on the podium for the best affordable navy suits, but if you’re on a serious budget and in need?  It’s worth a shot.  Ships free and returns free in store.

Alfani RED Light Grey Suit Separates – $219.98* (for the pants and jacket)
Feel free to wear a tie with some contrast.

Meanwhile, on the light grey side of things.  It’s a worsted “sharkskin” wool.  (Meaning:  There’s black and white woven very closely together to make the grey.)  Don’t worry, it doesn’t shine in person.  Fabric is about the same shade, maybe a click or two lighter, than the Indochino Essential grey.

Lacoste Concours Suede Drivers – $109.99* ($150)
Suede with a leather penny strap.

Anyone getting our man Barron something for his birthday?  Well, they’re kinda close.  These are suede, not leather.  Same basic model by Lacoste though, only this one has a leather penny strap instead of tassels.  At least they ship free.  Meanwhile, if you’re size 10.5 and up, check out the Amazon owned 6pm.com, which has these for a real nice price of $82.99.  If you’re a size 8?  Lucky you.  Nordstrom has them for half off at $74.90.  (Look how thorough that is for a Friday morning.  Don’t expect that in the future.)

INC Linen “Lemmy” blazer – $59.99 ($120)
As light as an INC blazer got this summer.

Only available in “wintergreen” which I think… THINK… is the color shown above.  It looked awfully grey in person under the warm glow of the friendly Macy’s dressing room florescents.  Lined in poly, but overall nice and light.  A mix of linen and ramie, which is a natural fiber.  Up close of the fabric is here.  All sizes available online.  Will need some tailoring, but not half bad off the rack for a cheap linen blend sportcoat.

Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply Woven Cotton Belt – $30.99 ($85)
Denim & Supply. This must be the supply part.

Over/under 1 more year for the survival of the RL sub brand “Denim & Supply”?  Seems like it just hasn’t been taking off.  Rope-like woven cotton belt with o-rings at the buckle.  Not everyone’s style, has a bit of a hippie/younger vibe.

Kenneth Cole REACTION Seersucker Blazer – $44.99 ($119.50)
Left: Macy’s. Right: KC’s site. They the same?

Hang on now.  Is this the same blazer as this?  If it is, this could be the steal of the sale.  Under $50, plenty of sizes, and a dark seersucker that’ll keep you cool now, but could potentially be worn year round.  The Macys pics haven’t done it any favors that’s for sure.  Shipping as usual is steep, but even if you buy it solo it’s under $60.

DKNY Slim Fit Tonal Vintage Charcoal Check – $159.99* ($350)
All wool and half lined.

Nice looking blazer.  It’s the wrong month to even be thinking about something this dark though.  Wool too, which is good, just not in the middle of July when half the country is on fire.  DKNY stuff has a tendency to feel higher quality than some of the other brands at Macy’s.  One to keep in mind for the future?

Tommy Hilfiger Slim Fit Short Sleeve Button Up – $36.99 ($69.50)
Maybe?

This actually looks halfway decent.  Not everyone is convinced that the short sleeve button up is back, but this might be worth a shot.  Striped, has a button down collar, and claims to be slim fit.  If you plan on wearing it untucked you might want a tailor to chop the tail a bit shorter.  Looks long in the pics.

Perry Ellis Reversible Belt – $20.99* ($42.50)
Slim buckle = good.

A cheap belt is a cheap belt.  (Profound right?)  It’s not something you’ll hand down to your grand-kids.  You might be lucky if it lasts you more than a few years.  But for those who don’t want their belt to be that noticeable, something like this should work great.  “Antiqued” gunmetal buckle is real slim.  Should knock the shine down a bit from that chrome number your boss wears.

Cole Haan Air Colton Saddle – $110.99 ($198)
Sizes are real scattered on these.

The calmest color combination of all their louder saddles.  Ships free since it’s over $99.

Fossil Transit Leather Duffel – $177.99 ($318)
Pic via Fossil.com, where the bag is $220

Fossil can make some decent quality yet inexpensive leather products.  And unlike a lot of their stuff, the logo/branding on this is barely noticeable thanks to it being black and tonal.  2880 cubic inches of space, so a good size.  Leather.

The current Macy’s One Day Sale ends Saturday 7/14.

I like the KCR seersucker blazer a lot – different but still looks wearable. And $45 is an awesome price. But I have a “do you really need to buy any more crap?” post-it on my laptop, so… I guess I’ll pass.

I own the KCR seersucker blazer and it is totally worth it. It’s as fresh as seersucker gets.
I had to get the collar tailored and changed the buttons to MoP for a
slightly more springy look. I’m getting compliments and questions about
    it all the time.

Joe, how are the shoulders on the Alfani Red suit? They look a bit large in the dressing you pic. Would you say the pants are pretty slim? Im considering trying this one…

Where do you get your MoP buttons from?

    The shoulder pads are huge.

The blazer doesn’t appeal to me (not a fan of KCR in general), but if you’re looking for something like this, the price is right.

    Black seersucker?

    :/

They’re certainly bigger for a slim fit suit. One of the Alfani Red’s drawbacks. But if you get the right size (and the pad doesn’t hit the wall before your shoulder does on the ol’ stand next to the wall and lean into it trick) it won’t look too out of place.

Pants are pretty slim. Not as slim as the hilfiger slim fits.

For reference: I normally wear a 32×32 514 jean and am 6′, 175lb, and the Dockers D1 are too slim but the D2s are perfect. This Alfani Red suit fit perfectly off the rack in a 33×32 pant and was not too slim at all..

They have pearl and white available for the INC blazer

How does the Alfani RED compare to the BR factory suits? I’ve found that the BR factory suits have some of the shortest jackets which works well for someone around 66 inches (38S). BR’s price was $160ish (they are running a 50% of suiting sale).

I’m a 41 in most suits. Should I go 40 or 42 in the Alfani navy solid?

  14. Thomas says

    July 14, 2012 at 12:45 AM

I’m normally a 41 so should I do the Alfani navy in 40 or 42? I have a ludlow suit in 40 but it is very snug. How’s the Alfani fit compare?

  15. Ben says

    July 14, 2012 at 7:10 AM

I’d go 42. I am a 45 but mine fits pretty well as a 46, although I needed the body tailored a little.

The sharkskin one is actually really sharp.

pulled the trigger on the alfani red light grey, BTW check retailmenot.com for an additional 10 off your 75 or more order. Brought it to about 209 for the pants and jacket.

I have the Alfani Red light grey suit. Bought it a couple months back on a Macy’s one day sale. Got it at 65% off! Ended up paying about $180 with tax for the whole thing. A steal I must say. Got it tailored for an extra $75 (not at Macy’s of course). Wore it to a wedding with some brown Johnston & Murphy wingtips. Got a lot of compliments!
Overall I love the suit and you can’t go wrong for the price.

The seersucker looks pretty good in person. A dark grey, however two of the four sleeve buttons are working :/
