The Suggestion: U.O.’s $50 Waxed Cotton Racer Jacket

Urban Outfitters Waxed Racer Jacket by Charles & 1/2 – $49.99 ($68.00)

A leather racer-style jacket can be a little hard to pull off if you’re stepping out of a Honda Accord.  No it’s not a requirement to have a motorcycle (or say, a roadster) to wear a leather jacket, but a leather racer or moto style can sometimes look a little out of place.  This jacket lets anyone wear that trim shape and style, and it doesn’t even pretend to be leather.

It’s a decently mid to light weight, not too stiff at all, waxed cotton that looks more expensive than $50.  It doesn’t look like it cost you $200, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not good looking.

Real trim through the sides and arms.  Which is good since it comes with standard bomber style elasticized fabric at the cuffs and waist.  The cuffs and waist aren’t too cinched, and with the trim lines on the body, it doesn’t ride up or poof out when you move.  The one drawback is the left arm pocket.  Some might not like it, some might feel a need to put some ball points in the pen slots for the hell of it (not really.)

For some, it’ll be too short through the body.  It hit my longer-than-average torso a little below my belt buckle, so if you have a noticeable belly, forget it.  If you don’t, know that when I crossed my arms (above) it didn’t rise up that much at all.  Pretty fast looking for fifty bucks.

Note:  Free shipping kicks in at $50.  This is $49.99.  Plenty of sub $5 to pick from to avoid the $10 shipping.

Code WTVR for 10% off… I grabbed something for $6 and brought it down to $50.39 . . not sure if you would make free shipping if the discount dropped it below $50 though…

Also, went with the Olive… Love the color but hard to find nice jackets in it. Hopefully this one won’t disappoint…

“Which is good since it comes with standard bomber style elasticized fabric at the cuffs and waist.”

NOOOOOO I hate elasticized waists! Argh…. Looks like a sweet jacket but that’s a deal breaker for me.

I think if I walk around with my arms constantly crossed to hide the terribly placed pockets I could make this work 🙂 Seriously, so close to being a buy for me , but I don’t know if I can get past the pockets.

Hang on now, the fact that there is the standard elasticized waist/cuffs is not a positive (I agree
with you.  Hate it especially on leather jackets) BUT… since it has trim arms and a trim body, the elastic is
barely noticeable and doesn’t impact the lines.

Most jackets with this layout have arms and bodies that are way too big, with cuffs and waists with elastic that’s way too tight.  Makes you look like the Michelin man.

But the opposite is true on thi things.  The arms and waist are quite trim, so the waist and cuffs are less noticeable.  And, the waist and cuffs aren’t too tight either.  Just right for the body.  Still gonna be a deal
breaker for some, and I get that, but the cuffs and waist on this thing
isn’t like it usually is on other jackets with this layour.

Where would you like the pockets?  Seems pretty standard harrington style placement to me.

I don’t have any experience with waxed cotton.  Is it water-proof or resistant?

  9. Nate says

    Usually water-resistant, but not water-proof.

I expect it will hold up to rain, but I wouldn’t go swimming in it…

Hey Joe, how is the fit in the chest and shoulders?  I assume you are wearing a medium?  I generally try to wear smalls, but sometimes they are too restricting in the chest and shoulders.  I’m usually a 37s-38s in sport coats, 41.5 in. chest, 33 in. waist.  Somewhat short torso.  You think small or medium?

Quality post. I really like some things at UO.

  12. Joe says

    September 15, 2011 at 7:32 PM

That’s about right for this one.  It holds off water pretty well, but it’s not full on water proof.

  13. Joe says

    September 15, 2011 at 7:32 PM

I think you’re a candidate for a medium.  These are pretty fitted.  I don’t want you to end up something that looks shrunken you know?  I’m wearing a medium in the pic…

After watching Drive, I’m wondering if you’ve seen a white racer jacket somewhere, Joe?

Not one with a scorpion on the back, or one that shows blood that well.  But, we’ll see… 🙂

How functional is it? Windproof? Breathable? Would it be adequate for riding my bicycle in 45-degree weather?

Thanks for the recommendation.  I got a medium this past weekend…now just waiting to wear it (i’m in TX).

I don’t know if I can recommend a size for you, but I can tell you how mine fits me. I’m 5’9″ and 145 lbs with an average-length torso and shorter-than-average length arms. I wear a slim 36R in jackets, which usually fit well through the torso and are slightly long in the sleeves.

This jacket is a perfect, if very trim, fit for me in a small. So trim that I can’t really zip it all the way up at the throat. The arms are a perfect length for me which means they are shorter than your typical size small jacket. The body is a good length too, short but not too short.

I’ve been wearing mine in 80+ degree weather here in Colorado. Yeah, I am that desperate for fall weather to appear.
