Nordstrom isn’t like Macy’s which seems to run a sale every week. They’re also not like Macy’s in the sense that even when Nordstrom does run a sale, their prices can be a little steep. But if you’re going to upgrade your wardrobe, now’s not a bad time to do it through Nordstrom.
Their Half Yearly Sale for Men is a select merchandise sale, and the items they’ve chosen to mark down are all over the map. Expensive, inexpensive, dressed up, casual stuff… much of it marked down by 30% or more.
There’s over 1,600 items online that have been marked down. Here’s what might be considered the top 1%, broken up by price range and in order by cost.
.
***Price Range: $0 – $100***
Wear these with just about anything. Jeans especially if you think you can pull off the look. And yes, you can pull off the look. Under a sweater, under a blazer, under both. It’ll work.
.
Look for these to show up in round III of the Slim Fit Dress Shirt Palooza, which should happen sometime early in the new year. In the meantime, not a bad option for guys who want something other than their standard solids.
.
Looks to be the exact same design as their cotton raglan sleeve sweater, which fits nice and trim and moves well once you put it on. Penguin logo at the chest, made of lambswool. Dress it up or way, way down.
.
You get what you pay for when it comes to dress shirts. So if you’re wearing a suit and tie day in and day out, spending a little more on your shirts is probably a smart idea. Marked down from around $100 to around $60, the HUGO trim fit is well reviewed online and should hold up pretty well over time.
.
Almost $70 for a scarf is a hefty price tag, but it is cashmere, and the combination of a buffalo plaid with browns, blacks, and grays looks incredibly sharp. Not a bad way to add some color to a black or gray overcoat.
.
For Nordstrom? $90 for a coat is about as inexpensive as it gets. It’s a wool blend so there’s wool and a bunch of other synthetic fibers, but the overall layout of the coat seems to be right. The drop looks to be upper if not mid thigh, there’s hand warmer pockets at the chest, and then the standard full pockets at the bottom. Also available in Navy.
.
For the guys who just want a dress shoe. Nothing too crazy fancy. Simple cap toe, but appears to be slimmer than say, a Bostonian from Macys. Under $100 and… made in Italy? Really?
.
***Price Range $100 – $200***
True hiking boots are very much “in fashion” right now, but forget about that for a second. If you spend any time in the outdoors, a good, waterproof hiking boot is a must. Who cares if these things are being worn by coastal Dandys trying to look all woodsy. These are a standard. Italian made, heritage brand, welted sole, and under $200. And yes, they do look pretty sweet too. They’re even featured in the January issue of GQ.

Is it just me or do the toes on The Park Ridge (not to be confused with the Park Avenue
.
Nice looking overcoat/peacoat hybrid. Double Breasted, long enough to be formal looking, button tab cuffs but no epaulets. And the blend that makes up the fabric is encouraging: Wool, Nylon, and Cashmere. Nice.
.
The cotton wool blend makes them claim that this is a four season sport coat. Slim but not razor skinny lapels, nice looking buttons, and it could end up being the most versatile sport coat in your closet. Might look pretty sharp with one of those 1901 Knit Ties from up above.
.
Or instead of the Calibrate… there’s this one. Heads up though, it looks to be a synthetic wool blend. The first word in the makeup is “Polyester” then followed by Wool and lycra spandex. Eesh. Could feel great, could feel… not so great. For the guys who want a pattern but not one that’s Shannon Sharpe loud.
.
***Price Range: $200 and up…***
Instead of an overcoat/peacoat hybrid, this time it’s the Nordstrom brand Calibrate combining classic trench details with an overcoat fabric & length. Herringbone pattern, tab cuffs and epaulets, gun flap, and drops to the knee. A little long for everyday wear, but… if you’re a city dweller with a suit & tie gig, could be a great addition.
.
If your suit budget is around $300, and you’re looking for a suit that can be the foundation of your business/dressed up wardrobe, then this one ain’t a bad option at all. Calibrate leans decidedly younger and more athletic. Center vent on the back jacket, slimmer lapels, great color. Great price too.
.
Damn. Not your average coat by any stretch. A lighter brown Glen plaid, single breasted front, and a chesterfield type collar all combine for an ultra regal looking coat. And the collar back? Suede. Wool and Cashmere.
