J. Crew Outerwear Sale – Picks based on what you’re wearing.

J. Crew Outerwear Sale – 30% off, prices as marked, expires 12/8

Plus Free Shipping over $150 with code SHIP150

Some guys splurge on shoes.  I’m a coat guy.  Having a great go-to coat can be an investment that’s just as valuable as having a few well tailored suits.  We live in a business casual world, so not everyone wears a suit every day (or every month for that matter).  But from September – April, almost all of us are wearing a coat of some kind when we leave the house.  Being comfortable in an incredible looking coat is a solid investment.  You’ll be wearing it enough.

Picks are based on what you’d most likely be wearing under the coat.  And of course some coats work on more than one style of dress (like a topcoat or peacoat.  You can wear those with almost anything.)  Be warned that J. Crew has only put their own line of coats on sale.  So if you were trying to save a few hundred bucks on a Belstaff jacket, that’s not happening.
.

If you’re wearing… A Suit: Mayfair Wool Topcoat – $262.50 (reg. $375)

All can pull off the herringbone. Not so for the saddle color.

Topcoats are about as simple and refined as it gets.  They should be long enough to provide plenty of coverage, but not so long that you look like you’re walking down the street in a snuggie.  And make sure it’s a tailored fit but still has room for a suit jacket underneath.  J. Crew offers four solid versions (including the “saddle” camel color you see above) and a dark herringbone.  The herringbone is the most versatile without being boring.  Covered placket on all of em’, nicely priced with the sale.
.

If you’re wearing… Cords, a blazer, & a sweater:  Authentic Peacoat – $178.50 (reg. $255)

Ahoy.

Under $200 for a J. Crew peacoat?  That’s a pretty good deal.  Yes the Navy is the most classic, but if you’re the kind of guy who doesn’t like the blue on blue look, then navy will be tough to wear with jeans.  Black is easier.
.

If you’re wearing… Jeans and a flannel:  Wool University Coat – $164.50 (reg $235)

Nice pockets.

Plain.  Simple.  Their University coat has a standout feature that most like it don’t have.  Hand warmer pockets at the middle of the torso.  Awesome detail.  Well done.  But why are they charging more for a “slim” size?  Shouldn’t it cost less in raw materials?
.

If you’re wearing… A Tuxedo:  Chesterfield Topcoat – $276.50 (reg. $395)

For the most formal events.

The Chesterfield is as formal as it gets.  Distinguished by the velvet collar, these are made to be worn over your chosen black tie getup.  Ticket pocket is a nice touch.  Hugely affordable compared to say, the Brooks Brothers version.
.

If you’re wearing… Nothing at all:  Holborn Trench – $138.60 (reg. $198)

Official outerwear of Frank the Tank

Question:  Does a flasher become a streaker only when he completely removes his coat?  Shorter than the ankle grazing London Fog numbers your Grandpa wore.  Probably can be worn without the belt.  Or clothes.
