Express Winter Sale – $15 off $30 & $30 off $75 with code 9830
Plus: 40% off select shirts/sweaters/pants. Thanks to HM for requesting picks
Codes, select sale items, and thresholds. It’s a complicated one, but the just launched Express Winter sale has some good basics if you hunt and peck through Express.com The code you need is 9830. That’ll get you $15 off any purchases (including marked down sale items) over $30. And $30 if you get up above $75. If you plan on shopping in store, you can print off a coupon right from the home page. Same level of discounts apply.
The sale runs through Monday, and there are even some whispers that there could be free shipping tomorrow with no minimum purchase. But those are just whispers, and more often than not whispers don’t come true. Let’s get on with it. Hold onto your hats, this gets a little goofy.
.
Striped Wool Tie – $24.84 | Plaid Wool Tie – $24.84 IF you buy socks & use the code

Stay with me here because this might get convoluted. Express is smart when it comes to pricing, sales, and codes. The ties are on sale for $29.94. A fair price, but just six cents under the threshold to use the $15 off $30 coupon code. So… buy a pair of overpriced socks for $9.50 (gotta love the subtle but still bold thinner than normal rugby stripe), use the coupon code, and all of a sudden you’re paying under $25 for the tie and the socks. Ta-da. They can be had for even cheaper if you think your better half would use Express lip gloss.
.
1mx Fitted Cotton Shirt – $24.65 a piece IF you buy two & a pair of socks, & use the code

Like the tie example above, you have to work their system here. Buy one shirt and you’ll pay $49.90. Buy a second and you’ll get that one for $19.90, meaning… total cost for two Express 1MX shirts with the $15 off code is now $54.80. But the hefty $30 off coupon code kicks in at $75. So… drop a pair of $9.50 socks in your cart. That pushes the total pre code to $79.30. The code then delivers the larger $30 off discount, and you end up paying $49.30 for two Express 1mx Shirts and what basically amounts to a free pair of socks. I know the Express 1mx has its construction flaws. But personally, I wear the hell out of them.
.
Merino Wool Cardigan – $37.80 w/code (reg. $88)

Express is notorious for mislabeling things on their website. So is it really 100% merino wool? Probably. The retail price of $88 is a bit much for a mix. And their other merino wool sweaters and vests really are 100%. Not a bad looking cardigan if you’re into the traditional button up sweater look.
.
Tweed Wool Mix Producer Pant – $32.90 w/ code (reg. $79.90)

Some have complained that these are poorly constructed. I tried them on in person and I would have no qualms about spending just over $30 on them. It’s tough to find a tweedy pant to go with say, a navy or black blazer. These have the perfect look. And although they’re more synthetic than actual wool (I don’t think they feel that bad to the touch at all), the price is hard to ignore.
The Express winter sale ends Monday 12/20 at 11:59 PM ET
Right on time. I dont wear anything from Express, but hopefully I can find a pair of slacks for a cocktail party im going to on Saturday. Thanks again!
Has anyone tried on the trench coat at Express? Interested to see how it compares to the trench at Banana Republic. Both are close in price, but I am kinda torn between the two.
@Andy: Which trench are you considering from Banana Republic? This one? They’re still available in some stores, but not online… I can vouch for that one. Best purchase I made all year.
Yep, that is the one. I have not seen the BR trench in stores in a few months, but happened to spot them on the rack when I ventured into a BR yesterday. Wasn’t sure if they were bringing it back.
Has anyone seen both the jcrew and banana trench coats? If you could get both at the same price, which would you choose?
@Andy: I haven’t seen the Express one yet, but I can’t imagine it stands up to the BR. Mine’s incredible. Looks great without the belt, actually repels water… etc… If you’re a Banana/Gap/ON card holder, it’s 40% off today in store. They might be doing 35% off in store for everyone else too.
@Andy: Just got back from a field trip. Saw the Express one, tried it on, full review coming probably Monday. Cliffs notes version is: Get the BR one if you can find one in store at a good price point. BR Trench = A, Express = C+/B- It’s okay. It’s not bad. But it’s not the BR one. And it’s not worth $200 full retail that’s for sure.
After a recent in-store visit, I want to say that those wool ties are NICE. I particularly like the “Christmas pattern” plaid one. I can always use some 1MX Fitted shirts too. Thanks for the heads up on this sale, Joe!
So I have both the banana trench that was previously featured here and the jcrew holborn trench. jcrew is more caramel color than banana. Banana trench’s weight is way more substantial, feels more structured, is warmer, and has the detachable liner on the inside. Jcrew trench is single breasted, has smaller lapels, no epaulets and (both smalls) is roughly 3″ longer. I’m leaning towards returning the jcrew and keeping the heavier banana. Anyone else have the jcrew trench?
The Jcrew trench is a bit more trimmer/tapered in around the middle though.. but both have belts so I **think** it shouldn’t be that big of a problem
Joe, Thanks for the brief review and look forward to your full opinion! Agreed, rarely is anything at Express worth paying full retail. I found the drop length of the Express one to be a bit short. The BR trench is awfully tempting, considering they were handing out 35% off coupons a few weeks back.
I happened to stop by Express today and tried on the MX1 slim fit dress shirt and the producers pants (which are the same style/cut as the tweed wool mix pants shown here. the dress shirt is a good emergency shirt to have. not the best but fits decently enough that if you don’t have a better option, you can definitely wear it. the pants i actually liked a lot … but i didn’t want to pay $100 for 2 pairs or the $49 for the one tweed wool pants but with the extra discount, they’re worth it
Joe, awesome. Thanks Bro, fyi guys, if you are like me and got swamped with work yesterday have no fear. Express is offering free shipping today…holler…and Joe def picked the pieced i was going to get…SWISH!
