Cole Haan Air Garrett Wingtip Oxford – $129.90 (reg. $195)
Click here for the previous candidate, the Rockport Hillandale.
A sleek silhouette and not too clunky in the toe. That’s all that it takes to qualify for this ongoing search for the perfect modern wingtip. And since this is an affordable men’s style website, price has to be taken into consideration as well.
The next shoe to come up in the search is the dressed up Air Garrett from Cole Haan. It was a good year for Cole Haan, with the Presidential attention and all… here’s the breakdown of the Air Garrett’s first glance impression:
The Pros
- Closed lacing
- All-over perforations and jagged/pinked edges aren’t too obnoxious
- Rounded but not stubby toe
- Mahagony color looks excellent
- Nike Air in the heel
- On sale for 33% off
The Cons
- Partial, not all leather sole
- Since sold by Nike, maybe a high markup?
- Expensive at $130
- Could be a little more streamlined?
- Leather on black pair looks somewhat dull (could just be the pic)
The Verdict
The mahogany pair look outstanding. But there’s just something about the black pair that doesn’t look as impressive. Maybe it’s the photograph, but the finish isn’t as appealing as the mahogany. When it comes to these with full-blown perforations and the accompanying traditional edges, I think the brown pair is the better bet. Almost all sizes available. Discount only available through Nordstrom.
I’ve been looking to get a pair of Cole Haans and, thanks to you, I just bought my first one! Time to get some navy pants…
Is this welted/replaceable sole?
These are muuuuuch better than the rockports. Cole Haan never dissapoints. And that air technology makes them feel really lightweight and comfortable. Black wingtips just don’t look quite as good as a chocolate or burgundy color. In this case its no exception. Good find Joe.
I actually just purchased the black pair last week; sadly, they’re on their way back to Nordstrom. The black leather is much shinier in-person than it appears (a common trend, I’ve noticed, among affordable black wingtips) and feels cheap to the touch. They’re also somewhat heavy, though it may be less an issue on smaller sizes (I ordered an 11). I will give credit where it’s due, however: the toe shape is almost spot-on, and the Nike Air in the heel makes them phenomenally comfortable,.
I bought this shoe from Marshall’s last year for $50. It wasn’t this exact shoe, as it was from the “Collections” set (made by Church’s), but it looks identical. I love them.
Currently at my local marshalls for $99.
Has anyone purchased or seen in person a brown pair of these? I’m contemplating a purchase but will need to do so online, as they are not carried in my local Nordstrom.
