The Best of Tommy Hilfiger – An All American Comeback

The Best of Tommy Hilfiger – An All American Comeback

In March of this year, Tommy Hilfiger’s namesake brand was sold for $3 Billion to the company that owns Calvin Klein.  Not bad when you consider that a few short years earlier his brand was almost on the sale racks at WalMart.

In this piece from The New York Times, style writer Erick Wilson presents the recent history of both Tommy Hilfiger the man, and Tommy Hilfiger the brand.  He gets Hilfiger to admit that denial played a part in the bottoming out of the company, just before a few key decisions initiated a Lazarus-like rise from the dead.

The brand and the man are back, and they’ve thankfully returned in a smarter, cleaner, more modern way.  Under the NY Times video of Mr. Hilfiger you see below, you’ll find evidence of this re-set.  Four favorites from the “New” incarnation of Hilfiger are highlighted that solidly prove this isn’t your older brother’s Tommy Hilfiger.

#1 Tommy Hilfiger Trim Fit Suits – SALE $300.00 (Reg. $525)

$300 for a higher two-button modern cut suit. Not bad.

Like a lot of things at Macy’s, the Tommy Hilfiger Trim Fit Suits are hardly ever not on sale.  But even at the seemingly perpetual sale price of $300, they’re still one of the top affordable modern cut suits widely available.  One warning:  The jackets seem to run a little long, so if you’re under six feet, consider a short.

#2 Tommy Hilfiger Garrett Oxford – $98.00

Preppy. Almost too preppy.

The old Tommy Hilfiger was too busy mass producing carpenter jeans to ever consider diving back into preppy-American style.  Suede Bucks aren’t just a head first dive back into that pool, it’s a full on cannonball.

#3 Hilfiger Tim Coat – SALE $149.99 (Reg. $298) |  Pieter Coat – SALE $149.99 (Reg. $298)

These are a major leap forward for Hilfiger outerwear.

All of the other affordable yet still fashion forward American Retailers haven’t figured this out yet.  Guys who wear suits could use a plain but still fitted three season coat.  Most don’t want a trench with a belt.  The new Tommy Hilfiger not only has produced two modern Mac style coats, you can get either for just $150.  Chew on that Banana Republic.

#4 Tommy Hilfiger Black IP Watch – $115.00 | Hilfiger Classic Silver Tone Watch – $75.70

Hilfiger Watches can be worn with jeans or a suit.

Hilfiger watches can be sporty and chunky, or thin and refined.  Plus they’re as affordable as a Fossil, all while being much more grown up.  They’re a hugely welcome addition to the sub $200 watch brands.

Tommy Hilfiger sure seems to be back.  But are you buying what he’s now selling?
