Steal the Style – Quantum of Solace Boat Chase
007 spends a lot of time in Quantum of Solace running after, or away from people. The opening five minutes just might be the best part of the entire movie, but the boat chase scene (see bottom of page) holds it’s own as well.
Shot originally in Panama, Daniel Craig’s James Bond shows in the scene it’s possible to dress casual yet stylish even in warm weather. From the top down, here’s the affordable options that’ll let you steal this style for next to nothing. All the items are inexpensive enough that unlike Bond, you shouldn’t have to to kill a rogue geologist for the jacket.
Notice I said “shouldn’t.”
Black Short Jacket – Converse Mateo $49.99 | Kenneth Cole Zip Front $79.98
You’d think it’d be easy to find an almost plain, fitted, black jacket. It’s actually not. Most designers and retailers hang odd zippers, too many pockets, or large logos on their casual outerwear. The Converse Mateo (left) is sold by Target and aside from the chest pockets it gets pretty close to what Craig is wearing. For $30 more, you could get jacket without those pockets from Kenneth Cole, but the collar is now a stand up moto. (Which looks pretty good)
Black Fitted Polo Shirt – Express Signature $34.50
Even if you’re not trying to out run gun toting bad guys, you need a polo that moves with you. Pique just doesn’t cut it. The stretch infused Express Signature is fluid, smooth, and fitted but doesn’t look like under armour.
Stainless Steel Dive Watch Watch – Orient Black Mako $131.67
The official watch for Quantum of Solace was the Omega Planet Ocean. That particular time piece retails for $4200. A more than capable substitute is The Black Mako Dive watch from the Orient Watch Company. They come highly recommended from a Dappered.com reader, and they hit all of the similar style points.
Light Gray / Off White slim chinos – Dockers D1 Slim Flat Chino – $36.00
They’re not bright white, but they’re almost there. The dark tone of the polo and jacket demand the opposite on the lower half of the body in warmer weather. Don’t even go pure khaki. Make it light. Way light.
Dark Brown / Black boots – Clark’s Original Desert boot – $95.00
Here’s a question: If brown shoes and a black suit looks bad, why does brown shoes and a black polo / jacket sometimes work? I’m seeing brown boots in this scene. They could be black, but, they need to be dark brown at least. Clark’s are everywhere with everyone from J. Crew to Eddie Bauer trying to ride their popularity coattails. Simple and easy to wear, they lace up instead of slide on for a better fit.
