L.L. Bean’s updated “Signature” line has been in the works for quite awhile now. The launch of a modern fit and more stylish line of clothes from a traditionally boxy, functionality-only outdoor retailer seems to be the thing to do. And credit to L.L. Bean. They’ve committed to it more than others, releasing not just shirts, sweaters, and pants, but chino suit separates available in three different colors.
A suit is always going to be a clothing line’s flagship, and my first reaction to the L.L. Bean Signature Chino Blazer was this: That’s a hell of a contoured fit. The shoulders look perfect, and if it weren’t for the slightly too casual patch pockets, this might be a home-run for the newly launched line.
Looking at their other offerings like sweaters, pants, and even outerwear anchored by a good looking trench… it’s easy to conclude that this is another option for the under 45 crowd who likes to look good even while seriously relaxed. The clothes are simple, and look like they fit. So of course, that’s going to piss off some of the L.L. Bean core demo.
A reviewer for the Signature Gingham Poplin Dress shirt didn’t take too kindly to the changes:
He complains of thinner fabric, and a very slim fit… Great! Sign me up for that. But just not for $60. If I wanted to pay those prices, I’d buy full price J. Crew stuff. And if you don’t think the L.L. Bean Signature Line (just like the Land’s End Canvas) isn’t a direct shot at the J. Crew guys, take a look at this, and then this.
Imitation is the highest form of flattery. It just should probably cost a little less.
