The 12 Days of Dappered – What to get a Guy

The 12 Days of Dappered | Day #1 – Liquor

I have it on good authority (my wife told me) that some ladies might be poking around this very website in hopes of finding some great gift ideas for the men in their life.  For the next 12 week-days, we’ll do just that.  Let’s start with something that’s almost foolproof:

You can’t go wrong with liquor.  Unless he’s Mormon.  And then you can go wrong with liquor.

Assuming he’s not of the LDS faith, ask yourself this:  What does he like to drink cocktail-wise when you go out on the town?  Is he a Gin and Tonic Fellow?  Whiskey?  Scotch?  Tequila?  Try and remember what he orders when beer or wine doesn’t show up at the table.  Now hit the liquor store and try and find a unique bottle of that base liquor.  By unique I mean something aside from what you’d normally find just above the well liquor in any bar.

Here’s a guide depending on what kind of guy you’re buying for.

*Gin – No: Tanqueray  Yes: Brokers, Miller’s, Beefeater24, Blue Coat
*Vodka – No: Smirnoff  Yes: Crystal Head, Belvedere, Ciroc
*Scotch / Whiskey – No: Johnny Walker  Yes: Suntory Yamazaki Single Malt, Mcclelland’s Speyside, Auchentoshan
*Rum – No: Captain Morgan  Yes: Pyrat, Rogue Hazelnut Spiced Rum

A note on the scotch and whiskey drinkers.  They’re a picky lot.  Single malt?  Bourbon?  You might want to ask his Dad or friends for clarification and suggestions.  Also, if you ‘re lucky enough to live in an area with it’s own Micro-Distillery, pick up a bottle of their home-made stuff.  Support the local economy.  For example: if you live in Boise, trust in Bardenay.  They make great stuff.  Near the Oregon coast?  Rogue does a fine job.
