In Review: Nordstrom Henrik Italian Wool Sportcoat (navy blazer)

Nordstrom Henrik Navy Wool Sport Coat – $399

  • Fabric: 100% Italian Traveler wool
  • Lining: 100% Viscose
  • Construction: Half canvas? Maybe? Seems to feel and wear nicer than fully fused.
  • Sleeve Cuff Buttons: Non functioning. Tailoring sleeves should be cheap/easy.
  • Lapels/Vents: Notch lapel. Single center vent.
  • Sales? Not yet for this new navy blazer. Fingers crossed.
  • Size Shown in Review: 40R on 5’10″/180
  • TL;DR Grade: 8/10. Foundational and smart. Fit could work for many straight off the rack.

We are living in the golden age of over promise/under-deliver. All sizzle… no steak. “Hats” as far as the eye can see, yet not a lot of cattle.

Nordstrom’s house line of sportcoats and suit separates are the opposite of that enshitification. They are well made, fairly priced, quietly timeless, and widely available.

Nordstrom “Henrik” line sportcoats.
Nice fabrics. Starting price is $399.
Some go on sale or end up
at The Rack.

The latest edition to their stable of suits and sportcoats is part of their “N125” line, which is a batch of products created to celebrate the company’s 125th anniversary. (So don’t expect trendy, flashy stuff.) It’s a navy blazer so positively navy-blazer it can be argued that one hasn’t seen a navy-blazer which navy-blazers this hard in a while.

Size Shown: 40R on 5’10″/180
Tailored but not tight through the sides.
Length is modern (29.5″ base of collar to tail on a 40R.)
Not chopped, but not traditional/long.

Made in Vietnam with a crisp Italian basketweave wool, it has exterior patch pockets (even the chest) which will prevent it from being confused for an orphaned suit jacket. The fit is tailored but not tight, the cuff buttons are non functioning for easy sleeve length tailoring, and it’s fully lined in viscose instead of cheap polyester.

Nice, all season, crisp basketweave wool from Italy.

The lightly padded shoulders, center vent, and navy color are proudly prudent. It comes with the modern choice of dark brown buttons, but for the traditionalists they include an extra set of gold-tone buttons. Those extra buttons even have sailboats on them. YACHT CLUB HERE WE COME, LOVEY! (Or as the case would be for most of us, those gold buttons can go right in the bin.)

Patch pockets = blazer/sportcoat style.
(Won’t be confused with a suit jacket)

The fit is Golidlocks. Not tight, not boxy. The tail isn’t chopped, but your frame won’t be drowning in it either. As someone of average height/weight (5’10″/180), I think it’s fair to say many will be able to get away with wearing it off the rack, no extra tailoring needed to look sharp and handsome.

Extra gold buttons for the super traditionalist/”Yacht-Boy Summer” types

$399 isn’t cheap. But it doesn’t feel cheap. It feels like the kind of blazer you can wear over a t-shirt or polo with jeans, as well as dress up (all the way up) with a crisp dress shirt and trousers. Smart casual choices like a chambray or OCBD paired with chinos or cords or twill 5 pockets are also clearly in play.

Average height/weight/arm lengths may be able to get away with no extra tailoring.

Alternatives would be the Bonobos Unconstructed Italian Wool Hopsack blazer for about the same price, but be aware that those drape/wear more casual as they have almost no structure or lining. J. Crew Factory’s Wool-Blend blazer is closer in terms of structure and presentation for ~$150 less, but the fabric and lining on the JCF isn’t as nice.

Non functioning sleeve cuff buttons =
easier (and cheaper) to tailor the sleeve length just right.

This blazer from Nordstrom does the job. It doesn’t scream or preen. It doesn’t cut corners on cost, nor does it target the top 1% with hyper-luxury nonsense either.

It has been designed and made with care, at a price point that’s fair, with an off the rack fit which for many will be immediately ready to wear.

That’s a hell of a combination. And bizarrely, all too rare.
