Best of Threads – Retiring Shoes, Spotting a Fake, and Your Christmas Budget

What’s Dappered Threads? It’s our forum. Launched in 2011, Threads is a not too big, not too small, just-right-sized forum that doesn’t put up with snobbery. All thanks to the users and hardworking mods. Once a month, one of the mods from Threads provides us with a highlight package of the last few weeks.

When to Retire Worn Shoes/Boots

How worn do you let your boots/shoes get before replacing? This thread was posed by user jack90, specifically regarding his well worn Red Wing Iron Rangers, and what boots to purchase to replace them. Purchased before jack90 knew (or cared) about taking care of his boots, several threads users jumped in to give their prognosis on the future of these worn out Red Wings. All seemed to agree that with some TLC they are salvageable. A suggestion from dpark was to clean, condition, polish, and stick some shoe trees in em’, then decide if it would be worth it to have new heels or soles put on the boots.

What’s “Normal” to spend on Family for Christmas?

Your wallet likely just took a beating over Thanksgiving weekend. And to that note, user C.Dubs out of curiosity decided to pose a question to the threads community: what do you typically spend on family, per person? Seems like the majority consensus was from $30 to $75, depending on the family member. But then there’s hockeysc23, who plans to buy his wife a car this year. I’d say that bumps the spending average up slightly.

Review: O’Connell’s Shetland Wool Sweater

Threads user LCDR provided a review of a Scottish Shetland wool sweater as a comparison to WoolOvers Fisherman Crew Sweater. It turns out that LCDR personally preferred the Scottish Shetland wool sweater (sold by O’Connell’s in Buffalo, New York), even though it costs twice the amount of the WoolOvers. In fact, he even purchased a second in navy. User Woodbury agreed with LCDR’s affinity for this type of sweater, highlighting a few other reviews from around the interwebs.

Spotting a Fake

What to do if you think you might be considering buying a fake Omega Seamaster? Throw it out into the threads universe! User BillN did exactly that, asking for advice on a Seamaster with a price too good to be true. A few threads users gave their opinions, encouraging BillN away from this concerning purchase. LesserBlackDog thought the movement just didn’t look quite right for an Omega, and while cs455 concurred it looked like a fake, he reasoned that if the looks are good and the price is right (say, under $200) then why not buy it?

Singing the praises of the JCP Stafford Deacon

Starting and ending with boots in this best of. It’s no secret around these parts that one of the best offerings for men (if not the best) from JC Penney are their Gunner & Deacon boots. Newer threads user ScotsmanInBrooklyn felt moved to sing their praise after the recent review of the Darrel Cap Toe Chukka. Turns out a lot of threads users have purchased either the Deacon or Gunner, and are mightily impressed by the quality to value ratio. User 300e stated ” I don’t think I’ve ever gotten better value out of a shoe purchase”. Keep that leather quality up JCP, because if it goes south, looks like there will definitely be a public conversation about it.

Head on over to Threads and take a spin around.
