Best of Threads – West Coast Style, The Perfect Sportcoat, & Chukkas

What’s Dappered Threads? It’s our forum. Launched in 2011, Threads is a not too big, not too small, just-right-sized forum that doesn’t put up with snobbery. All thanks to the users and hardworking mods. Once a month, one of the mods from Threads provides us with a highlight package of the last few weeks.

What I Wore Today

Got a new outfit you’re proud of, or just looking for some fresh inspiration? The What I Wore Today (WIWT) thread is for you. With the Fall weather moving in, Threads users have started busting our their cool weather gear. AsianDapper went full-Fall with a textured gray sportcoat paired with a Fair Isle sweater. JeremyG90 pulled out a chunky shawl cardigan, green pants, and boots while Leanderthal put together a solid mix of browns and blues with a corduroy blazer, dark denim, and suede chukkas. These are just a few of the multitude of great getups our guys put together. Head on over to WIWT!

California Stylin’

Vicious49 was headed to California for a vacation, so he came to the Threads to get a sense of west-coast style. voodoo and evanparker suggested keeping it casual and laid-back: tees, polos, shorts, and sandals. Matchbook pointed out that just because the culture leans casual doesn’t mean it’s not style/fashion-conscious. thecharlesg even suggested doing a little celebrity research to see how the more fashionable dress. Check out the rest of the thread for more California-themed style tips as well as some great dining recommendations.

The Perfect Sportcoat

Finding a sportcoat that’s all natural fibers, the right fit, not too cropped, and somewhat unconstructed sub-$200 is a tall ask, so DandyLion hit up the Threads for some ideas. Leanderthal pointed him in the direction of Spier & Mackay and Lands End, but both of those come with a compromise: Spier & Mackay’s offerings hover around $300, and Lands’ End’s jackets in that price range aren’t all-wool. eBay and Yoox were offered as options however both of those can be crap-shoots; it can take some serious hunting to find something there. DandyLion’s still on the hunt. Are you too? Catch up on the rest of the thread or check out our recent post on Fall 2016’s Best Affordable Blazers & Sportcoats. (Pictured above is a Brooks Brothers Fitzgerald Fit Wool/Silk sportcoat. You may or may not think it falls within the realm of “perfect.”)

These Boots were made for Walkin’

ryn recently moved to Europe and has found himself doing a lot more walking than before, up to 8 miles per day. Not many shoes can take that sort of daily punishment. zerostyle advised to avoid leather-soled shoes as they wear down quickly on pavement and are suceptible to the elements. ryn was wisely leaning toward chukkas-they can be casual and dressed-up. Most chukkas tend to come with rubber (Danite) soles too, which are your best best for durability and comfort. However, as evanparker pointed out, the traditional crepe sole, which would seem like the best bet with its softness, is a bad idea. Walking will wear them down quickly. (Pictured above is the Loake Kempton.)

Head on over to Threads and take a spin around. Many thanks to moderator BJ Mcgeever for assembling this month’s Best of Threads.
