It sure feels like J. Crew has been more restrictive with codes in Q1 of 2016 than they had been in most, if not all of 2015. And they continue to use language like “30% off everything…” on their website despite that not being the case. Everything is 30% off? Far from it. But this sale feels a bit better than most. Lots of new arrivals, and while much of the men’s line is excluded (almost all sportcoats, most suiting, etc…) there are a few items available for this code (some dress shoes, some suits(!) Legacy blazers, etc.) that would have been excluded in recent, previous sales. Off we go with the picks.
Yes really. The day after they knock $75 off, which was the first time in forever they offered a discount on these things, they go and drop the price by more than $110. If you bought one yesterday? I’d give J. Crew Customer Service a call or pull them up in an online chat to see if you can get a price correction. Otherwise, order another blazer, bite the bullet on return shipping for the original purchase, and still save some major cash.
No, they aren’t up for this sale. But they did just get a ton more colors in, and they are absolutely worth a mention. Even at full price, they could be the best bang-for-the-buck warm weather sportcoat out there (and stay tuned for the twice-a-year best sportcoats list coming up in the next week or so). The mid to lighter blue “deep water” shade was first featured in a how-to-wear-it over this way. But that was the only color they offered for a month or so. Now? Five more shades just hit the J. Crew website. Each is super light, almost completely unlined, and made from a Portuguese cotton/linen fabric that drapes extremely well even with the jacket having little to no structure. One thing to note: That “coastline navy” shade (upper left) might not be quite as dark in person. Their online shots for that color are confusing to say the least.
Pretty much J. Crew’s version of the Allen Edmonds Strand. But not made in the USA. (China most likely?) Italian leather uppers and a slim leather sole keep it classic. Are they going to be as nice as a pair of AEs? Probably not. But with the discount, they cost almost half as much as a pair of full priced AEs. That said, if you’d be okay without the medallion on the toe, splurge on the very much on sale AE 5th. Those are currently going for $245.

Pucker with some pattern. Solid and/or striped seersucker shirts are pretty easy to find for less. But one with a pattern like tattersall might be a tough ask. Would look great underneath a solid, lightweight sportcoat and with dove grey jeans or chinos.
Not a bad price, and hopes are high for that Italian stretch chino fabric. Looks like it might be lined in a lightweight oxford cloth as well? Big fan of the shade of blue too.
Lightweight huh? Look, Oxford Cloth shirts are a little like jeans. The depth of the fabric is great in the cooler months, but when it gets steamy, they spend more time on the shelf than not. So if J. Crew has slimmed down that heft, but still has some OCBD texture? Some might be interested. Fifty bucks is a lot for a casual button down though.
Pique has a bit more texture than a smooth chino, so expect that here with these Italian fabric suits. Available in the slim Ludlow or more generous Crosby cut. Ludlow comes in either the “stone” shade that’s shown above, or the blue “French Navy” shown on the Crosby on the right. Crosby is only available in French Navy.
A super-versatile buck with a slightly slimmer profile than traditional summer bucks. Goodyear welt too. Wear em’ now with jeans, and wear em’ later on with your lightweight summer gear. Also available as a wingtip for a few dollars more.
A perfect, lighter weight layer to throw in the weekender bag for a trip to the coast. Or the lake. Or the mountains that has some sorta stream running behind that cabin you’re borrowing from a pal who built it with his brother and his dad (make sure you bring a nice bottle of liquor for the cabinet as a thank you). A little like the Lands’ End Cashmere Stripe Crew. Only not nearly as expensive, and machine washable. A little pricey for just a sweater, but with the free shipping no min. offer, and the classic good looks, some of us might fall victim to getting this as an impulse buy.
Wool & cotton get teamed up to make for a slightly textured fabric. Nice shade of mid-gray too, and that extra ticket pocket will be coveted by some.
Be warned. This thing is not a lightweight. At least, last year’s version wasn’t a lightweight, and it appears to be the exact same jacket this year. It’s made of cotton, but it’s pretty heavy and doesn’t move the best. Sure the basketweave texture is eye-catching, but it’s more like chain mail than a light and breezy, summery cotton. This is the fit that J. Crew used to call their “urban slim.” Not as tight as the crushingly skinny 484 fit, but they don’t balloon out on most frames either. Both the oxford cloth and the Irish linen/cotton will do real well when the mercury starts to spike.
Just a simple & polished looking mac. Half lined too, which is nice for the warmer months. Reviews are a bit all over the place on this one though, with most saying it runs big.
