What’s Dappered Threads? It’s our forum. Launched in 2011, Threads has become a not too big, not too small, just-right-sized forum that doesn’t put up with snobbery. All thanks to the users and hardworking mods. Once a month, one of the mods from Threads provides us with a highlight package of the last few weeks.
Sskim3 posted a Sunday Challenge theme that asked entrants to put together summer outfits made of items that cost less than $150 total (eyeglasses excluded). Among the entries were sskim3’s own slick summer outfit (including a Brooks Bros. sport coat, Bill’s Khakis shirt, Land’s End pants, Chucks, and a Panama hat) and theskillets’ $139 Mossimo, Bonobos, Straight City Trading Co., H&M, and J Crew look. In the end, however, LesserBlackDog took the crown with a polished cool late summer look that included, among 0ther items, Clark’s desert boots, Bonobos jeans, a shirt from J Crew Factory, a cardigan from JCP, and a Timex watch, all for the low, low total of $146. That’s some solid bargain hunting and a hell of a sharp look at any price.
On August 5th, Christopher Ingraham posted an entry on the Washington Post’s Wonkblog entitled “I Wore Shorts to the Office and Nothing Will Ever be the Same.” Threads user BigDeal, in turn, sought other threads users’ opinions on that post. As might be expected, reactions were mostly negative, with LesserBlackDog referring to Ingraham’s shorts-based outfit as “a hot, wrinkled, unkempt mess,” and Little Nelly succinctly stating that he “would feel ridiculous wearing shorts to work.” However, ndintel and southy chimed in with tips on how, if you must, to do office shorts right (i.e., wear tailored shorts with the right shirt and decent shoes), and BengalsFan actually wished for the idea of wearing shorts in the office to catch on. Overall, everybody had a strong opinion, regardless of what that opinion was. If you’ve got one, come on over and air it while there’s still some shorts-wearing weather to be had.
Some regard automobiles as mere conveyances, while others view them as more of an exoskeleton providing at least as much opportunity as clothing for showcasing taste and style. Threads member Harrison started a thread for the latter group to show off and discuss their whips. Posts have included pics of Harrison’s BMW/Ford/Chevy/Nissan lineup, DapperTexan’s description of his unfairly overlooked 4Runner, Brent k’s description of his Caddy/Corvette/Mazda/Jeep collection, a pic of frankjcampbell’s Toyota FJ Cruiser, and many more besides, all against the backdrop of a discussion regarding whether one’s choice in automobile is a reflection of one’s style. If it is, judging by these posts, there are some very stylish gentlemen posting in the threads.
Speaking of looking right in the office, AUCLT posted a thread soliciting advice regarding appropriate attire for his “HUGE” job interview. Specifically, he was looking for input on whether it was acceptable to wear dark brown wingtip boots and a pink tie. The upshot of commenters’ advice was well summed up by LosRockets, who advised that for both shoes and ties, interviews call for simple attire that allows your qualifications, rather than your clothing, to stand out. Within that broad consensus, however, Danny offered the advice that a suit that fits well will help an interviewee to “subtly stand out,” thecharlessg and LosRockets disagreed regarding whether neat ties are interview-appropriate, and all wished AUCLT good luck in his interview.
The What I Wore Today (“WIWT”) thread has been busy lately. JBarwick has posted several sharp looks, as has JDI and thecharlesg. They were joined by JPK4242, sogno, jharrisonbarret, ndintel (with a floral Star Wars shirt, no less!), BillN, PekkaKarhunen, LesserBlackDog, jmhuang, Ambrot, MrFeeny, and several others. Hell, there was even a minor dustup regarding the best tie knot (because, nerrrrrds!). Come check it out, post a photo of your outfit, get some feedback, give some feedback, argue about tie knots, shoelaces, what have you…
