Something happened in the 90s that the sports world still hasn’t quite pulled out of: The “No Fearitization” of major sports team’s logos. The graphic designers for pro sports teams did nothing but bold and italicize for a couple of decades, in an attempt to “mean up” otherwise perfectly fine, classic logos that should have gone untouched.
Many teams are reverting back to their classic logos, and that’s terrific. But if you or the person on your list is stuck with a team that still believes more is more, in terms of their uniforms and logo, then consider diving into the world of throwbacks.
Bonus points if the team has a storied past (and perhaps a previous name/played in a city they no longer are in), and the piece of gear given reflects that… as long as that past isn’t too painful. Even better if the team in question left/was taken away/is now completely defunct, yet the guy holds a fond place in his heart for that long lost team.
Where to find this stuff? Try Ebbets Field Flannels, Mitchell & Ness, or the online pro-shops for the team in question. Many teams are still producing their old stuff, even if they don’t wear it in the field of play. Why? Because even if the future for your favorite team is bright, the past often looks better.
