New J. Crew Blazers on sale, Haberdash, & More – The Thurs. Handful

October 23, 2014 By Joe | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

J. Crew: New Arrivals + 25% off Select Full Priced Styles w/ TGIFALL

Ludlow Navy Velvet Shawl Collar Sportcoat | The Thursday Handful on Dappered.com

The Picks: Ludlow Navy Velvet Shawl Collar Sportcoat – $246 ($328)… Wait, hang on a second. Stop the handful.

They brought back last year’s velvet shawl collar Ludlow blazer?

And the 25% off code even works on it?

TOO SEXY OH NOO

It really is something else in person. That’s a pic from last year, but that image shows off a bit more of the sezexahy than the bright plaid tie they styled it up with this year. Also, this year the description says it’s “hudson navy”… so, not sure if that’s any lighter than last year’s option. Look, it’s not something you’re going to wear everyday. And Mid $200s is a lot to drop on one blazer you might wear 5-10 times a year (think holiday parties, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s day, etc…), but it’s pretty slick if you can pull it off. Anyway…

back to the picks: Ludlow Sportcoat in Blackwatch Cotton – $171 ($228), Marled Lambswool Crew – $52.13 ($69.50), (and in case that navy shawl is too boring) Ludlow Burgundy Velvet Contrast Peak Lapel Sportcoat – $246 ($328)

H&M: Up to 50% off select Jackets & Boots

H&M: Up to 50% off select jackets & boots | The Thursday Handful on Dappered.com

The Picks: Dark Grey Quilted Jacket – $74.99 ($99), Leather Zip Boots – $74.95 ($99)

Not the largest selection, but some of H&M’s cheap, seasonal stuff, just got even cheaper. Prices are good until 10/24, or until they blow through the stock they got. That quilted jacket is a very, very affordable option for those who don’t want to shell out for Barbour-level prices.

Target: 25% off Men’s + Free Shipping no min.

Target: 25% off Men's + Free Shipping no min. | The Thursday Handful on Dappered.com

  • 80% Wool Shawl Collar Varsity Sweater – $49.49 ($65.99)
  • Wool Blend Peacoat – $59.99 ($79.99)
  • Wool Blend Topcoat – $59.99 ($79.99
  • Target Mossimo Supply Co. Cords – $18.74 ($24.99)

Good gravy. When’s the last time Target did a site wide free shipping offer? And combine that with 25% off men’s? Not bad at all. If you source some basics from Target, yet hate running to the brick & mortar, now’s not a bad time to stock up. It’ll come to you, rather than you having to navigate the parking lot/streets to go to it.

Haberdash: 1/3 off all Bespoke No. 607 Items w/ BESPOKESALE

Haberdash: 1/3 off all Bespoke No. 607 Items | The Thursday Handful on Dappered.com

The Picks: Haberdash Bespoke 607 Half-Canvas Angelico Blazer – $331.99 ($498), Haberdash Bespoke 607 Alfred Plaid Peak Lapel Jacket – $331.99 ($498)

WARNING: Haberdash only gives out store credit or exchanges for stuff on discount. So know that going in. If you have questions about sizing, you can give TJ a call at 312.624.8551 and he’ll take care of you. That blazer is still pretty pricey, even with the discount, but it’s a half-canvas made in Canada blazer that should be a workhorse in your wardrobe for years to come. Nice ticket pocket too. Want something a bit louder, without getting completely insane? Try the Alfred Plaid jacket. Matching pants are available too.

Amazon: 20% off select Boots w/ BOOTUP14

Amazon: 20% off select Boots | The Thursday Handful on Dappered.com

  • Original Chippewa 6-Inch Service Utility Boot in Chocolate Suede – $212.80 ($266)

  • Chippewa 1901M20 Men’s 6-in Moc Toe Wedge Boot Cordovan – $199.20 ($249)

No Red Wings or Wolverine 1000 Milers, but there is a very nice selection of Made in the USA Original Chippewa boots that are up for the discount. First shown yesterday, those 6″ service boots in a cordovan-shade of leather (not shell cordovan leather) are friggin’ drool-worthy. Same leather is available in a moc-toe boot as well. More Chips here.

Joe, how does the suit supply blue line compare to the purple line. For a long term suit that will see monthly wear is the purple line worth the extra $100?

  2. Charlie says

    October 23, 2014 at 6:14 AM

Heard on NPR yesterday that to compete during the holiday season, Target’s new CEO decided the whole site will offer free shipping until after Christmas.

  3. Andy Porter says

    October 23, 2014 at 6:16 AM

What’s up with H&M shoe sizes? I never see a 12 on there sight. I have to size up in everything there b/c the target audience seems to be manlets, but I like some of the shoes

  4. Steven Bremer says

    October 23, 2014 at 6:25 AM

    That is correct.

  5. Mike N says

    October 23, 2014 at 6:31 AM

So I can’t comment on the comparison between the two – but I just picked up a charcoal blue line as my first suitsupply purchase. Wanted to test it out, get something basic, see what I thought (plus I’m naturally kinda a cheap b@stard). I think for 399 the thing nails it all around. Could not be happier with the purchase. Jacket fit right on, had to get the pants tailored but expected that. Fabric quality is noticeably above anything else I’ve seen at that price point. Construction feels solid and durable. I’ve probably worn it 4 times in the last two weeks. It is going to get a lot of wear and my next suit purchase will probably be the same. The only advantage I see to the purple line is that some of the details are a little more thought out (ticket pockets, weaving in a white thread to the charcoal suit, etc). After my purchase, I’d be comfortable spending the extra 100 for some of those details; but I’m not worried about this one holding up.

  6. JRok says

    October 23, 2014 at 6:32 AM

This is bullshit. I didn’t have any intent of waking up and spending $250.

  7. Connor says

    October 23, 2014 at 6:39 AM

I wish that I could order suit supply suits, but the pants that come with a size 42 are way too big to tailor down. Do most people fit into a -5 drop from chest to waist?

  8. TR says

    October 23, 2014 at 7:15 AM

Blue/Purple line are supposedly the same. My understanding is same construction, still half canvassed. They just buy more basic patterns in larger quantities to allow for the cost to get down.

  9. fattsmann says

    October 23, 2014 at 7:17 AM

Yes, I was going to write this same exact thing.

More of the basic patterns and also the fabric is not as… cushy. The Purple line’s wool has this more plush (plusher?) feeling when you run your hand over it.

  10. Corwin says

    October 23, 2014 at 7:23 AM

For Target, you can get a REDcard that debits directly to your checking account and still get the 5% off and free shipping on all purchases. It’s one of the few “loyalty” cards that I actually use.

  11. theYeti says

    October 23, 2014 at 7:30 AM

I was really after a pair of the Chip 1901s in black, which naturally is gone in anything like my sizse.

  12. Steven Bremer says

    October 23, 2014 at 7:43 AM

So not really worth the extra $100 if it will be worn maybe once a month to work, church, and for special events?

  13. Dennis says

    October 23, 2014 at 7:46 AM

I have the same issue. I’m a 40/41L and need a 32″ waist. I feel like that is a very common ratio, too.

  14. Kevinst says

    October 23, 2014 at 8:18 AM

I can’t wear them either, but for a slightly different reason. I cannot for the life of me fit my hips and rear in those things. The waist will billow, and the seat feels like its about to be torn apart by hungry velociraptors :/

  15. Loscv29 says

    October 23, 2014 at 8:25 AM

+1000 for that Pimp Juice, Joe. That made my day.

  16. rnjbond says

    October 23, 2014 at 8:27 AM

For Amex card holders, you get $50 off $200+ at Allen Edmonds. Sadly, the rediscover America sale is over, but if you can set aside capital for a month or so, you could pick up a gift card and then use it when stuff goes back on sale (perhaps as a result of price matching a Nordstrom sale)

    Or wait until Black Friday.

  17. A.J. says

    October 23, 2014 at 8:29 AM

Agreed. Embedded Pimp Juice videos are why I check this site 17x a day

  18. Chris says

    October 23, 2014 at 8:50 AM

Lame, not only is there not a 40s in the navy suit, but the drop is only 5 inches? Who wears a 40 chest and 35 waist? Spongebob Squarepants?

  19. Jason says

    October 23, 2014 at 8:51 AM

Joe, one might say AJ “only likes you for your pimp juice.”

  20. Joe says

    October 23, 2014 at 8:57 AM

Might depend on which fit you’re trying to get into. For example, at 5’10” / 180 a 38R in the napoli fits me like a glove, and the pants don’t need much work at all. Napoli jackets fit on the more generous side through the chest, but still have some taper. Meanwhile, the Lazio is way tight in a 38R on my frame.

On, and the “size advisor” they have? Says I should be a 34R. 34. They’ve gotta fix that thing. Stat.

  21. From Squalor to Baller says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:00 AM

I would say that it’s not worth the upgrade, assuming you want something that is available at both prices. Although I haven’t tried the blue line in person (I hope to soon), I have had lots of experience with VBC’s core line of S110s fabric and its is great workhorse stuff. Nothing cheap about it.

  22. Joe says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:02 AM

Yep. That’s what I understand, and was the case as of January: https://dappered.com/2014/01/suitsupplys-new-399-line-whats-the-difference/

Just to be sure, I sent an email off to the guys at Suitsupply just to make sure nothing has changed.

It’s a powerful source. From Wikipedia:

“In the song it is stated that women only want him for his ‘pimp juice’, which he needs to let loose.”

I can’t tell you how much I love how matter of fact that is.

    38R for 5’10” 180? I usually wear a 42S @ 5’7″ 180 (about a 43 inch chest, wear a 32/33 sleeve), but the size advisor told me i’m a 38S. I haven’t made a purchase because I’m paralyzed by uncertainty in fit, and can’t make it out to a store.

  26. A L says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:15 AM

From a cursory search of reddit it seems like chippewa moc toes regularly hit the low 100$s. Is this really that good of a deal? Not sure if this is a limited edition model or nicer leather.

  27. Joe says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:17 AM

Yes indeed. At least in their Napoli or York fits. And the sleeves are perfect on me too, which, is good since the buttons are non-functioning.

That size advisor is nowhere near reality. At least, for my measurements. What brand do you usually wear a 42S in?

For what it’s worth, shipping is free both ways. I recently ordered a suit, didn’t like the pattern/fabric when it showed up, ordered another (a 40R, just to see if I needed to size up) and that was too big. Returned those two, got a third. No issue.

  28. Jason says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:21 AM

The shipping note is nice, I’ll need to try it out.

I haven’t purchased a suit since college, so about two years ago (very business casual environment with federal government clients). My 42S is by something called a Prontomoda, and two Mens Wearhouse suits. No idea. Was on sale at a local shop at school and needed a suit for job interviews. Looking to get a big boy suit now, and love the value prop from SS, just worried about fit.

  29. tomservo says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:38 AM

7-8″ drop is pretty typical. Most brands have something in that range. 5″ seems extreme to me too.

  30. Tom says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:54 AM

For my last two Suitsupply suits, the in-store tailor had the associate put me in a 40L instead of a 42L because he said it was easier to let out the jacket than take in the pants and have the belt loops basically overlap in the back.

Strangely I just bought the suit in this post two days ago and will pick it up tomorrow with the alterations, but went with my traditional 42L in this one. I know the different lines have different sizes, so you might want to see which ones tend to be more roomy for future possible purchases.

Also, Suitsupply seems to be very reasonable for the alterations. I had to just spend $135 to get a JCF Blazer I bought (for $110) altered at a local tailor! So if you can’t have Suitsupply make the alterations and are getting anywhere near as gouged as I feel I am, it might not be worth it.

  31. Brandon says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:54 AM

That Ludlow peak lapel velvet blazer is a great pick up. I got last year’s in black and it’s been great for NYE and winter weddings. I needed to size up to a 44R (at 5’11″/200lbs, I’m almost exclusively a 42R) and it’s a fantastic fit. Because of the contrasting lapels, it leans formal and I don’t think it’s as versatile as the shawl velvet blazer. But, for a classy tuxedo jacket alternative, it’s an excellent wardrobe addition.

  32. Tom says

    October 23, 2014 at 9:58 AM

    Wow. Velvet, more velvet, Haberdash…Suitsupply…

Someone woke up on the bold side of the bed today!

  33. Tom says

    October 23, 2014 at 10:07 AM

Yeah, I just bought the $399 suit and the quality is really good. I tried on the higher priced Sienna and it was even better. But, to make an analogy, I’m going to be a lot more comfortable taking my BMW all over town than I would my Ferrari. (disclaimer: no actual BMW or Ferrari is owned). Point is, I’m going to get a LOT of use out of this one.

  34. Mark Johnson says

    October 23, 2014 at 10:22 AM

Generally speaking, my understanding is that the lower “quality” suiting fabrics wear better, all things being equal. What I mean by that is a 110s will wear better than a 140s – but the 140 will look and feel better. So, if you’re looking for a workhorse suit you’ll be wearing on a weekly or more basis the cheaper suit might last longer.

  35. Mark Johnson says

    October 23, 2014 at 10:27 AM

  39. Alex Dương says

    October 23, 2014 at 11:20 AM

I’m 5’9″ / 155. The size advisor also suggested 34R to me. I think it doesn’t “adjust” properly, so if you type in 39″ for the chest, it picks the size with measurements that are closest to what you put in.

  40. Joe says

    October 23, 2014 at 11:38 AM

41″ chest here. Put that in. = 34R.

5’8″ 190lbs here. 45-46″ chest. 44S in virtually OTR jacket/suit I’ve tried on, including SS Napoli fit. The fit guide measurements (not recommendations)are pretty accurate, so if you know your jacket measurements, you should be able to make a pretty good guess about what size will actually fit you. My issue with most of the SS line is that the shoulders are really narrow, apart from the Napoli. Most of their line lists sub 19″ shoulders for a 44 jacket. And then a crazy big waist.

  47. Jason says

    October 23, 2014 at 12:51 PM

Sounds like the 42S would be the way to go for me, then, correct? Curious why you went 44S instead of 46S

  48. Tom says

    October 23, 2014 at 12:55 PM

For the Suitsupply…$28 to lengthen jacket sleeves, $14 for pants hemming, $13 for pants waist. Usually I have the sides taken in a bit, but this associate didn’t seem to want to do much alteration.

A little skeptical I’m basically a spot-on perfect fit for a jacket off the rack, but I’ll see how it goes.

  49. Matchbook says

    October 23, 2014 at 1:15 PM

Doesn’t look like they have shipping options to the U.S.? Or am I missing something?

  50. fattsmann says

    October 23, 2014 at 1:22 PM

It says “Do not dry Dry clean.” I think someone is missing a punctuation mark there somewhere I believe that to be the case yes.

  51. Matchbook says

    October 23, 2014 at 1:24 PM

Because the 44S fits the chest for me just fine. For me, the 46S would have been slightly too large in the shoulders and chest for me, not to mention that extra half-inch of length for the 46 actually makes the jacket look too long on me, for my taste. Also, the the extra inch-and-a-half on the waist for the 46 makes tailoring more of an issues since I already have to deal with a great deal of waist suppression for all my jackets.

I would definitely suggest measuring a jacket that you already have that fits well and comparing the measurements to their fit guide. Like I said, it’s pretty spot on.

I have last year’s and love it. Best fitting sportcoat I own (only Ludlow I have) in my normal size 42L. Just be realistic about how often you will wear it. I bought it at the tail end of winter and only wore it maybe 3 times, now it is getting to the point weather-wise where I am hoping to start wearing it again. I wear it like the photo in this post, white or light colored shirt, knit tie and dark jeans.
