WEDNESDAY: 30% off & Free Shipping No Minimum
First, the bad news. Thompson suiting is excluded… again. Seems like JCF is sticking to their “you may have your codes, but they shall not be used on our suits” strategy. Dang. Good news though is that this is one of those free-shipping no minimum codes. So, that’s an extra $5 in your pocket for purchases under $100. Not bad, especially for the large swath that doesn’t live anywhere near a J Crew Factory Outlet Brick & Mortar.
Thompson Unconstructed Sportcoat in Linen – $96.60 ($168)
Not as low as they’ve gone for (seems like they bottom out in the mid $80s range) but the free shipping is nice… being that with the code it drops under the usual free shipping $100+ threshold. Seems like it should be a great option for those with legitimate concerns about the lapels & sleeve buttons of the JC Penney option over here. Anybody get their paws on this thing yet? How’s the linen? Decent? Comes in S/M/L/etc sizing, instead of the exact chest sizes.
Thompson Sportcoat in Glen Plaid Cotton/Linen – $82.60 ($148)
Fully lined but lighter weight than the herringbone cotton/linen option. Available in exact chest sizes.
Factory Slim Contrast Pocket Tee – $17.15 ($34.50)
No disrespect to Target’s fantastic Mossimo 60/40 cotton poly blend tees, but the extra cost on the all-cotton JCF options are worth it. Slim & trim through the sides, super soft cotton, and a bit of visual interest thanks to the colors & pocket.
Slim Pocket Tee in Sea Stripe – $17.15 ($34.50)
See above. Ditto, but with stripes. Holding up great and gets worn once if not twice a week. Size shown here is a medium.
Seersucker button down shirts in navy, pink, or blue stripe – $34.65 ($62.50)
WANT IN WHITE. But, there’s no white. The navy might look pretty slick under a grey suit or sportcoat though. As long as you’re not a sweater. And if you are, you might end up with some noticeable dark spots under your arms. But… dat pucker.
Slim Sunwashed Oxfords in Solids – $29.75 ($56.50)
A basic button down in their sunwashed oxford cotton and a slimmer fit. Ah, but… UNIQLO’s slim fit OCBD is $19.90 right now with shipping at $7 if you’re under $50. Free shipping at UNIQLO kicks in right now at $50+.
“Bleeker” Straight-Fit Garment Dye Jean – $34.65 (69.50)
Not a summer weight chino, but a warmer weather appropriate jean for when it cools off or the sun goes down. A jean, but saturated in color and without the denim look.
Short Sleeved Oxford Cloth Popover – $25.55 ($49.50)
Do popovers look a little bit like scrubs? Sure. Are they comfortable as hell? AAaaaaaabsolutely. Button down collar keeps it from flipping and rolling too. Just wish they came in a slim option.
Washed Button Down in Navy Pindot – $31.15 ($68)
Absolutely falls into the category of just-different-enough. Wear it with jeans, a washed cotton blazer, and some suede shoes for a date-night look that’s relaxed, sharp, and not too boring.
“Sutton” Slim Fit Summer weight chino in Turquoise – $31.15 ($59.50)
Fear not the Turq! It’s a summer color for sure, but it’s not as loud as a Nantucket red or even a pink oxford cloth pant. Looks good with navy up top too. Cut in their slimmer sutton fit in a summer-weight chino cloth.
Slim washed heathered striped pocket tee – $11.89 FINAL
In the clearance section, but the code & free shipping still applies. Lots of sizes. Slim fit, cotton/poly blend. Final sale. No returns.
Bedford Pant in Chambray – $31.15 ($74.50)
This, a Luxe touch polo, and a pair of casual loafers or white canvas sneakers… and you’re good.
Carson Duffel Bag – $61.60 ($98)
J Crew & J Crew Factory bags don’t have the best rep, so it’s probably not gonna be the last duffel you buy… but it’s nice and affordable, looks decent enough, and at 2,320 cubic inches, it’s got space, but it’s not gargantuan. More weekend options over this-a-way.
Arrow Print Tee – $13.65 ($34.50)
Has a bit of that “Murdock just escaped from the Mental institution again and he was wearing this” look to it. YOU CRAZY FOOL.
This 30% off & free shipping no minimum code WEDNESDAY expires… you guessed it, today… Wednesday 6/4/14.
They raised the prices since yesterday so that 30% just brings it back down to yesterday’s prices.
Is Uniqlo silm OCBD slimmer than Jcrew Factory?
I just grabbed the slim Hawaiian T and slim printed (arrow something) shirt. I second Joe’s recommendation of the slim pocket T in sea stripe – I have it in orange / navy, and it is very nice, although it seems to be a bit longer than most T’s I have.
I would have grabbed the navy seersucker, oxford popover and / or a short sleeved shirt…but none of those are available in slim fit! What’s up with that?
I picked up the linen blazer on the last sale/free shipping for about $82, actually wore it for the first time today. I wear a 36 and got an XS and it fits pretty perfectly. The linen is nice, but *very* wrinkly – took me a while to actually wear it because it showed up so creased from shipping, I let it hang in the bathroom so it would get a 5-10 minute steam once a day when I shower, still took a few days for the wrinkles to work out. That said though, I can tell it’ll be a go-to this summer, very lightweight and breathable but just a tad more structured than a Uniqlo Linen/Cotton blend, plus it doesn’t suffer the cropped tail/high button stance. Actually, my one complaint might even be that the button stance is a tad *too* low. Maybe…
Also, I’m a real skinny guy, and this is definitely a slimmer blazer (fits snugger at the waist than a Uniqlo XS).
I’m 5’9″, 145lbs, 36R jacket, 29″ waist.
I bought the linen blazer during the last sale for about $80. Really skeptical on the S/M/L sizing, but picked up a Large. It arrived folded and smashed inside a plastic bag, and was awfully wrinkled and creased taking it out of packaging. I had to steam press it, and that only helped halfway before first wear.
In terms of fabric, it’s really, really lightweight linen. Also pretty thin, I could see through it when held up to the light. Guess this is a benefit for summer heats.
In terms of fit, there were some issues. I’m 6’2″, 185lbs with broad shoulders and wear 42L as my regular size. The “Large” fit well in the shoulders, but had enough room around the midsection to hide a baby hippo before buttoning up. The armholes are well placed, didn’t experience any limitation in movement. Button stance, however, seemed very low. I think this blazer works well with polo shirts, but not with button down and tie. It’s interesting to note that the product image on JCrew shows the model only wearing a t-shirt underneath. This leads me to believe the blazer was designed to be heavy on the casual side.
Mine came in the other day and I wasn’t so pleased — I’m usually a 38S, so I got a Small, and it fit huge; especially low button stance for a thompson, felt rumply, and my fiancee said the linen looked particularly cheap. Mine’s getting sent back, but then again I don’t always fit into Jcrew’s sizes so YMMV
Yeah, I’ll agree that it definitely feels rumply – more casual for sure. I don’t think the linen is low quality, but again, definitely a more casual fabric, and very lightweight. Definitely not going to be for everyone.
I would love to know this as well.
I don’t get it. Even with sales, J. Crew Factory and J. Crew still seem overpriced to me. I’d much rather buy Uniqlo or do a stacking exercise with Banana Republic.
Once UNIQLO stops chopping their tails (not that J. Crew is traditional by any stretch) and lowers their button stance, I’d turn to their blazers in a heartbeat. Also, the inclusion of a slim fit in knits (tees and sweaters) for JCF is awfully nice.
But I’m sure plenty agree with you.
Agreed on the blazers. That’s one area that Uniqlo is not winning for me. However, I own the Factory Thompson Suit Jacket in Chino, and I’m not that impressed with the quality.
I usually stick with mainline J. Crew for my own personal blazer purchases (or the Abboud soft construction sport coats), but plenty have JCF blazers in their closets and dig em’. For many, they move better than BR while costing less, don’t come with functioning sleeve buttons (REALLY wish BR would stop doing that) and the linings aren’t poly or mainly poly.
But beats me man. To each his own.
Yes. Uniqlo regular OCBD is only a hair bigger in the sides that JCF’s slim fit. Uniqlo slim fit OCBD is too tight on me.
I got my hands on the linen sportcoat, sized M, sleeves are a bit long, looks well constructed, decent fabric, no padding whatsoever, only the sleeves were lined on mine. I’m 6’1″, 165lbs., 33″ waist, usually a 41R or 42R depending on brand. Shirt size is 15.5″ neck and 33″ sleeve.
I recently got the linen sportcoat in M and the glen plaid sportcoat in 38R, and i sent back the linen in M. The glen plaid fit perfect and i really like it, light weight and comfortable. The linen in M had horribly long sleeves and the completely unpadded shoulders were seamed way too wide so they hung off my shoulders and looked wonky. Maybe a small would work better. I’m 5’9 180 for reference
I was on the JCF website exactly when the sale started, 9pm here on the west coast, and I immediately added the linen jacket and a couple pairs of chinos to my cart. The pricing hadn’t updated yet, but the code worked (35% for cardmembers). Linen jacket for $76.71, chinos $22.43 ea. Add this to the tricks of shopping JCF. When you work the sales the value is unbeatable. Also, went with a small for the jacket after trying on in store. 6′, 155lbs. and long arms here.
Would wearing the Chino suit in the tan color be suicide in the summer? Thoughts?
Does anyone have experience with the J.Crew chino suits? Will it breath enough to wear to a summer wedding?
Thanks!
I have the Carson laptop bag. After a full year of schlepping it to and from classes overstuffed with laptop, casebooks, notebooks, and sundries, it’s holding up great. The handles have shown wear at the base, but that’s the only noticeable issue. I picked up the duffel for $47 last week, and I expect it’ll hold up equally well (especially since it will see much less use).
I thought the sleeves on the glen plaid were a little long too. Nothing anyone else would notice, but long enough to annoy me. Guess I need to see the tailor . . .
Haven’t done it yet, but that’s the plan this August when I go to a friends wedding…
Let my roommate (we’re the same exact size) wear mine to a wedding recently on a 90 degree day, he said it was fine for walking to/from the car and standing out side for pictures and stuff. Wedding wasn’t outdoors but he said it was pretty comfortable.
Good stuff! Can I ask how the arm holes sit? If I buy one more suit with low hanging arm holes i’m going to be forced to work in politics
I dig a good JCF sale, but not when the increase their prices ACROSS THE BOARD by 30% and then offer the 30% discount. I get it’s a marketing game, but still…
My Uniqlo slim fit OCBD feels a bit slimmer compared to my JCF slim fit soft wash shirts.
Good to know. Thanks for the reply. I’m the same height but at 135lbs. Typically I get 36R and have to have them taken in a few inches.
Checked in on prices on Tuesday before the sale launched Wednesday, and they weren’t the same (blazers in the low $100s like they are back to now). I understand it’s a moving target, but, am I missing something? Why does this “JCF prices are all the same” theory persist? (last question over here: https://dappered.com/2013/10/wedding-bands-missing-belts-sheep-the-mailbag/ )
Interesting that it’s come up before, thanks for the reference. Perhaps the capital ‘across the board’ was a slight exaggeration, or perhaps this is a Canada/US pricing discrepancy, but there are more than a few pants that moved from $30 to $45 just prior to the sale, and a few shirts I was looking at that moved from 30-35 to 45-55. I have snagged some incredible deals from them in the past – maybe today’s just not my day 🙂
Duffel came yesterday. It’s significantly taller than its base is wide, so it’s a little awkward. Might be going back. Feels just as solid as the laptop bag, though, and I definitely like the look.
Emailed and got the measurements for the linen sportcoat. hope this helps someone out!

Emailed and got the measurements for the thompson sportcoat. hope this helps someone!
Got the JCF linen sportcoat. It was a return. The linen was ok, decent heft to it, but it was gonna need more than the purchase price in tailoring. Pitfalls of S/M/L sizing.
With Uniqlo, just checking the measurements can usually show that sizing down a size would be about the same as a slim fit size at JCF
In case anyone stumbles across this later: decided to keep the Carson duffel. Took it on a weekend trip to the mountains and it packed well and still looks new. That leather (pleather?) on the bottom does feel fragile, but it’ll work just fine for the half-dozen or so times a year that I need it.
