Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
NOTE: To be honest, it feels awfully tacky to have retail sales surrounding Memorial Day. To those who serve, have served, as well as their families: Thanks for making the sacrifices that have allowed us in the rank-and-file to enjoy the trivial things (like this website). Travel safe if you are, and enjoy the unofficial start of summer. Now, back to stuff that doesn’t really matter:
J. Crew Factory: 50% off (excludes Thompson suiting)
- Thompson Unconstructed Sportcoat in Linen – $84.00 ($168)
- Thompson Sportcoat in Glen Plaid cotton/Linen – $74.00 ($148)
- Seersucker Button Down in Navy, Pink, or White – $31.00 ($62.50)
- 9″ Pindot Chambray Short – $28.00 ($56.50)
As good as it gets… except for the darn Thompson Suiting exclusion. That unstructured linen blazer came out just after this season’s best blazers post… so haven’t seen it yet in person. Anyone get it? Thoughts? Looks like a winner. Says it’s partially lined too. The Glen Plaid linen-cotton option is fully lined, but apparently much more lightweight than the (still nice) thicker cotton/linen herringbone blazer. No code needed on this one. Prices are as marked.
Ledbury: 30% off their “core collection”
The Picks: Blue Fine Twill Slim Fit – $80.50 ($115), White Fine Twill Slim Fit – $80.50 ($115)
Flat out spectacular shirts… and thus… the price. Terrific fabrics, a slightly lowered second button (so they look great tieless) and really good construction. They just can’t keep the damn things in stock. Fits are good if you’ve got some strength to you. Not as dialed in, fit-wise as Ratio, but up there in terms of quality.
UPDATE: This launched on Friday (5/23) with the discount dropping to 25% off on Saturday, and 20% off on Sunday.
GAP: 40% off reg. priced styles w/ EVENT
- Lived-in Linen-Cotton Straight Pant – $41.96 ($59.50)
- Brunson Blazer in Linen Cotton – $58.80
($98)
- Brunson Blazer in Charcoal Stripe – $52.80
($88)
- Basic Leather Belt – $17.97 ($29.95)
Lots of linen and cotton littering (in a good way) GAP’s site right now. A few more blazers that look awfully tempting, especially since they appear to be barely lined in cotton on the upper back. But GAP blazers are a little like UNIQLO blazers, being that they run short in the tail and long in the arms. So, be careful with those.
EXPRESS: 40% off Everything
The Pick: Suede Wingtips – $64.80 ($108… ships & returns free too )
Lots of summer style, in suede, for not much money at all. Ships and returns free as well. Decently slim through the toe. Full review over this way.
The Maybe? Club Monaco: 30% off Sale Items w/ MEM2014
- Mark McNairy Cap-Toe Boot – $359 (normally $425… would be $251.30 w/ code)
- Rancourt Venetian Slip-On – $179 (normally $225… would be $125.30 w/ code)
Hang on now. Club Monaco has 3rd party stuff in their sale section? Doesn’t say anything about how that stuff is excluded in the details, but on a dry run… the code wasn’t working on the Mark McNairy or Rancourts. Maybe they’ll flip the switch on that today? Probably too good to be true.
BONUS. Orient: The Brazen Automatic – $99.00 w/ HONOR
An entry level, 42mm automatic for a hundred bucks shipped? Might be worth a shot. Would love to throw one of these on a NATO or leather strap, but pretty sure that’s not gonna happen with the way the stainless band & pin connects to the lugs like that?
Also worth a mention
- Nordstrom: For the ladies… their half-yearly sale has started. We gotta wait till June for ours.
- Need Supply: Extra 20% off Sale Items w/ EXTRA20
- Ralph Lauren: Extra 30% off select items w/ RLMEM14 (but the selection is pretty paltry)
- Cole Haan: They’re running their semi-annual sale right now, with the Final Sale Stanton Chelsea dipping to under a hundred dollars.
- Macy’s: Extra 20% off w/ MEMDAY
- LastCall: Extra 40% off everything
- Haberdash: 15% off reg. priced items (not really “affordable” though)
- Huckberry: The Art of Manliness has curated a Father’s Day Gift Shop
- Banana Republic: 40% off with the usual exclusions w/ BRHEAT. They still have some blazers on sale.
- J. Crew: 30% off Sale Items as well as 25% off select goods with the code PACKME. One code, two separate deals. Their pretty slick looking Linen Glen Plaid in Indigo gets the 25% cut. Still expensive though, even with the code.
- Bonobos: Extra 20% off sale items w/ SALEBRATE
You should still be able to fit a different strap to those Orients. In fact, a NATO would probably be easier than any other strap as it is thinner. The spring bar likely runs slightly under those lugs. Might not look as clean, but it’s definitely possible.
Seems like Thompsons are always excluded from JCF sales now. That sucks.
Here’s the flip side of the Orient via their website, so, I’m not sure if that can be done on this model? http://dappered.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Orient-Lugs.jpg
And totally agreed on the Thompsons.
Actually you might be right. 🙁 That looks different than my Citizen with a similar band design. The spring bar looks exceptionally short on that, so any replacement band would need to be short as well, or it would need to be notched to accommodate.
What are the thoughts on the linen blazer with a blue pants dressed down for summer at work?
JPress and York St. are having a summer sale with 15% off. Worth a look for you trad fans. I have one of their shirts and it has quickly become my favorite button down.
Joe, which grey blazer is that in your photo for Ledbury? Or is it a suit jacket?
Be warned on the GAP blazers: the arm length runs very long. The models even seem to have the sleeves rolled up in several of the pictures. I had an GAP unstructured cotton blazer a few years back with the same issue. At $60 it just never seemed worth it to get the arms taken up which became a more complex issue due to functioning cuff buttons (not sure if its still the same now).
I’m curious as to the JCF linen sportcoat as well. Anyone have experience with it? Also, as a 41R, I’m curious as to sizing on these, since that’s borderline M/L according to the sizing charts. I hate being a tweener size…
What shade of blue pants and what type of atmosphere for work? I was thinking a similar outfit with navy chinos and a white OCBD at a very casual office (polos and jeans for most employees).
I got a 42R unstructured GAP blazer last fall in the $60’s. Seemed to fit well, but helped that it was actual sizing over S/M/L. As a 41R-42R, 15.5 neck, and 33 sleeve length, at least my sole experience with GAP blazers went well.
Anyone own the straight fit from Gap? Can they comment on it’s actual fit? I’ve never purchased a straight fit pant from them before and I’m curious what it’s actually like.
I got the JCF linen sportcoat when it was recently on sale (same price). I’m about a size 36, and I had to send back the S for the XS. I would go for the M.
Gots to give you a thumbs up for including your actual sizes when commenting on a size issue. Thank you.
Thompson Sportcoat, you’re lucky my friend tapped all the money I had for the last month and probably all the money I’ll make for the next month to attend his wedding…otherwise you’d be MINE! You hear me? You’d be mine!
Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of it… 😉
Cheers. I appreciate the feedback. Since it’s not ending in .99 I can send this one back too, right? Anyone?
No worries. Figured it at least helps more than “mine was okay”.
It’s a roomy fit. I’m a big guy with big thighs and some junk in the trunk and I still think it’s a roomy fit.
Just how slim are those Ledbury shirts? Their size guide shows them to be pretty trim, but there’s no way those shirts aren’t pinned in the back, right? I’m guessing bigger than Ratio’s ‘slim’ fit?
Appreciate the quick reply, Tom!
+1 to Tom. I prefer their slim fit, but not skinny.
12mm lugs – http://forums.watchuseek.com/f306/my-review-seemingly-uncommon-orient-brazen-998218.html
In famous dappered lingo, I “pulled the trigger”.
Also, Bonobos has a 20% off all sale items with code “Salebrate”
The Clymb has a flash sale of Levi’s Commuter series stuff and they also have an extra 25% off storewide today with code “memberperk”
Couldn’t pass up that deal on the Orient Brazen. The blue dial reminds me of an IWC Jacques Cousteau. And much more affordable.
CROSSED. THE. RUBICON.
(trigger works too)
Forgot the new wording and didn’t want to go dig for it.
Here’s a strap swap: http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f410/569483d1322854834-ordered-er1w003w-brazen-customization-updates-follow-6442290225_02569c8046_z.jpg
Sah-weet.
I was just reading an article George Hahn posted about a suit he got from J.Crew and he said the same thing (about all of their suits actually) – the buttons pop off really easily. I’ve actually had the same issue with a few other blazers (Frank & Oak, namely) – definitely not the end of the world or anything, haha, but a slight annoyance still!
I think I have that same pocket square… I got one at least similar to it from JCP a while back.
Clearly I’m not done buying shoes. Those loafers are perfect casuals!
Sorry to maybe make things worse, but a lot of loafers are in the $150 range at the AE Seconds Sale.
Regarding this, if replacing or upgrading buttons, where’s a decent place to pick some up that aren’t Walmart quality?
I am right between 9.5 and 10 and with the Cole Hahn Chelsea boot being final sale, I called one of the stores and asked. The guy knew the shoe, and said they run small, so I ordered a 10. Hope this helps.
JCP (shoot! it’s JCPenney now) has a linen/cotton blazer on sale for $59.99 right now. I think it’s 55% linen, 45% cotton. Undoubtedly lined in polyester but I’m looking into getting the lining removed by my tailor. So long as the whole thing is under $100 I’ll be happy.
Variety of colors and sizes. I think this is the one you’re referring to (and at least one comment does attest it is polyester lined, would breathe better without it):

Lucky you!. They are all out of the blue now!
Great jacket. I am wearing mine in the office today. Great for warm weather. Unlined and the the breeze just moves right through it.
I normally wear either a 38R or 40R from JCF. I got the medium in this jacket. Had to get the sides tailored as well as the sleeves. They were a bit long. Even on my slim 6’2 170LB frame. I like a real close fit though.
Ugh I really want the Lincoln Blue and Red check shirt but it’s been out of stock for ages…..
have a ton of AE’s already… I like those Venetian’s
If the arm length fits, Gap blazers can’t be beat for decent cheap casual blazers. But they, along with their sister BR, use functional buttons on the sleeves which makes tailoring cost prohibitive.
No no I am not agree with that because of http://bit.ly/1tFDwSM
Info on that strap?
Thanks!
