Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.
Macy’s: 25% off F&F w/ FRIEND
The Picks: Allen Edmonds Mora 2.0 – $273.75 ($365), Allen Edmonds Strand – $273.75 ($365), Persol Polarized Foldables – $285 ($380)
Took a spin through Macy’s the other day for Polopalooza research… and it’s starting to look more and more like Ross Dress for Less. But the good news is that most of Macy’s promos, especially the F&F offers, work on their higher end stuff online… like Allen Edmonds and Persol. You might have to promise your first born to the Sunglasses gods, but boy… those Persols are something else (and they better be for FOUR HUNDRED RETAIL?!?!).
UPDATE: Looks like Nordstrom has price matched the Mora 2.0 & Strand online. Nice.
UNIQLO: Blazer / Sportcoat Sale
The Picks: UNIQLO Linen Cotton Patterned or Solid Blazer – $49.90 ($69.90), Cord Lane Slim Fit Cotton Blazer – $49.90 ($69.90)
Remember… UNIQLO Blazers run long in the arms, and short in the tail. Button stance also sits a little high on these things. But the price? Can’t beat the price.
Piperlime: 25% off men’s w/ LETSGO
The Pick: Dockers Alpha Khakis – $33.74 ($59.00)
Free shipping & free returns at Piperlime as well. These things… are SLIM. So if you’ve got some meat on your legs, you might want to take a pass on the much beloved, but not the easiest to get into, Alpha Khaki from Dockers.
Bonobos: Extra 20% off Sale w/ SALEAWAY
- Washed Chino Blazer in Olive – $62.40 ($198)
- Double Breasted Slim Washed Chino Blazer – $102.40 ($248)
- Washed Chino Blazer in Khaki – $102.40 ($198)
- Slim or Straight Travel Jeans in Steel – $62.40 ($98)
- Rhodes Collar Oxford in Navy Tattersall – $38.40 ($88)
Came up yesterday of course. So that double breasted super-casual chino blazer… yeah, it’s a bit odd. Yes, it seems contradictory to have a double breasted blazer cut in such a casual fabric. But this thing has a shot. No nipple-level buttons, patch pockets reinforce the casual nature… this might be worth an in-person look…
Nordstrom: NordstromRack.com now live
- Bonobos Slim Fit Striped OCBD – $29.97 ($68)
- Walk-Over USA Made Suede Chukkas in Navy or Grey – $149.97 ($275)
- John W. Nordstrom Smartcare Trim Fit Dress Shirt – $34.97
You no longer need a HauteLook (Nordstrom’s flash sale site) account to access the Nordstrom Rack website. For those who have ridiculously STOCKED Racks near them (not all have the same caliber of merchandise), the site might not live up to expectations. But for the rest of us, might be worth a spin here and there. Best way to browse is to probably sort by your preferred brands. Know that shipping is a little steep. $7.95 under $100… over $100 = free. $5.95 to return by mail, but you can return a purchase to a Nordstrom Rack store.
BONUS: J. Crew: 30% off select items w/ GOSHOP
The Picks: Unconstructed Mini-Houndstooth Cotton Blazer – $131.60 ($188), Abingdon Laptop Bag – $68.60 ($98), Goodyear Welted Kenton Suede Bucks – $138.60 ($198)
Last day for this promo that happens to include a few summer suits. The unstructured mini houndstooth cotton blazer shown above just came in yesterday. It’s sized in S/M/L/XL, so most will need tailoring since it’s not quite as dialed in as their 36/38/40/etc… sized blazers. For example, the above is a M, and fits closer to a 41 or 42 than a 38 or 40. Gonna need the sides brought in and sleeves shortened. That said, it’s better than good for a casual blazer. Noticeably darker in person than online, and despite being completely unlined in the back, the facing inside the front (covers the pockets) adds a bit of unexpected weight. Not in a bad way, but know that it’s not super breezy. 97% cotton 3% spandex exterior. Sleeves are lined in a cotton poly blend. Micro houndstooth pattern is just that… tiny.
Also worth a mention
- Express: $25 off every $75 you spend w/ 1479
- Ledbury: They’re offering an extra 20% off their Spring Sale items. Selection is pretty picked over.
- Jack Erwin: They’ve started a “waitlist” for when their driving loafer are back in stock.
The colours of the Bourbon and Walnut are so different between the Macy’s vs Nordstrom pics. Which ones are more true to life? I’d like to get a pair for my wedding. I prefer both colours on the Nordstrom images.
I used to dread the ‘Thursday Handful’ because it meant I was about to spend money. Thankfully, Joe’s already gotten me in a place where I feel comfortable with my reserves 🙂
that’s an awfully good price on the Strands, which were not part of the anniversary sale….
I’d probably say Macy’s are more accurate. Walnut is definitely much lighter.
Thoughts on the Abingdon for a university environment?
Those Persols!
Student or faculty?
It has a Physics Professor (possibly grad student) vibe that I find very attractive…
I’m a professional writing tutor. I suppose I’m looking for a rumpled yet still dignified vibe. I otherwise wear button-downs, pants (or dark jeans), and brown dress shoes.
Rumpled yet dignified — that’s the physicist’s way! I’d say that Abingdon’s right up your alley.
I hear that. The walnut Strand makes me wish I wore suits during the day more often — they’re such an amazing shoe.
Is the next fit up from alpha khakis still the same material? I have a pair of alphas, and I’m a huge fan of how they feel/colors…. but I’ve got some meatier legs…
Anyone know if there is enough sleeve material on the Ludlow suits to have them altered to a long? I wear a 40L or 42L typically. I’ve stayed away from the jackets that are sized S,M,L,XL but I see a few here and there that I am tempted to pull the trigger on…
Ah, the Persols. If I won the lottery I’d buy a pair of those, a 1968 fastback Mustang, and play Steve McQueen all day long.
Wonder if there is a way you could use your company FSA to get Persols?
Girlfriend bought me those Persols for Christmas. Cant wait for a day of sun here in Chicago to actually make use of them, other than staring in the mirror.
I haven’t seen them in person, but there is a new Alpha fit that has a slightly roomier thigh and a tapered leg. However, I don’t see the on Piperlime.

Don’t forget the Monaco.
I would call J Crew CS and ask them. Usually they are pretty helpful.
What’s strange is that I can wear the Alpha Khakis but not Bonobos Travel Jeans. The Travel jeans are tighter in the crotch/seat area to the point of being uncomfortable for me. The Alphas are slimmer in the thighs though. I’ve bought 4 pairs and had to send 1 of them back because they were too tight on my thighs.
I recently found some sort of straight fit alpha (as opposed to slim fit). I’m not sure if they are labeled some other way but they fit very well. I cannot even pretend to fit into regular alphas.
Bonobos OCBD is already sold out in all sizes at Nordstrom Rack. On the plus side, it’s nice to have a site to browse before I stop into the store that’s about a mile from my house.
That’s hard to say. A lot of it can depend on body type and not just measurements. I’d probably just wait and get the M, then do an exchange (it should be for the same price, even if they jump back to full price) for a L if it’s too small?
My dad had a green ’68 fastback Mustang in his youth. I’ve never forgiven him for not holding on to it.
I’ve found that Bonobos pants in general are nuthuggers. I have to size up in the waist to make them tolerable. Then the inseam magically increases nearly an entire inch along with the waist, despite the tagged length being identical…? You are spot on with the Alphas–comfortable rise, tight thigh.
W/r/t the chino DB:
I bought the khaki one from the Suitsupply outlet last year, and I love it. You get the stunt factor of the DB, but it doesn’t look weird with jeans. Word to the wise though, if you decide to try it you had best be damn sure that you’re willing to own it, because you do look hella conspicuous, but mine gets overwhelmingly positive reviews from males and females alike.
In my experience the sleeves on their SMLXL jackets run long, so you may not have to have the sleeves touched. I think they have a little extra liner fabric there to allow lengthening if necessary though. The more crucial question is whether they’d wind up being too short in the body. That look is kind of in for the time being but for long term use you want to make sure the jacket covers your posterior.
Heads up, a small selection of sizes/colors of those Persols appear to be on sale at Amazon for around $200:

I’m beginning to think that spring and summer are never going to come to the Midwest. I think I can count the number of +60 degree days we’ve had in Milwaukee on one hand.
Keep an eye out for the Memorial Day sale. It’s not a guarantee that they’ll be included, but it’s only a couple of weeks if you’re not grabbing them now.
I’d venture to guess that the site and what the specific store has in-stock probably differs greatly. It seems like the site has it’s own stock as opposed to pulling from stores (too many “only 1 left” items without actually having thousands of different products).
I sure do wish that outlet would open back up, and my wallet is hoping it remains dead and buried. Best OTR jacket I’ve ever tried on and at a Macy’s price point through the outlet = win-win.
I must say, this is a fine site. I’m not really all that into style, but I find myself reading it almost every day. In these days of click crazed publishers, it’s rare to find a site that is focused on useful/entertaining content, and not just how many times you can get visitors to click on things. This post is a perfect example. Keep it up.
it’s totally unstructured…makes it look much more casual in person
FYI: Banana Republic Luxe Touch Polo on sale for $20 in plain white.

I’m a 42 in the shoulder with a small waist, any idea what Uniqlo blazer size I should be getting? For reference, I’m a medium in their OCBD and a small or xs in their t-shirts. Also considering splurging out on that JCrew cotton blazer.
My dad had a black on black ’68 Camaro SS. Have never forgiven him for letting it go.
There are actually three different fits: slim, tapered, and straight. I’m a tapered kinda of guy.
“Medical Eye Glasses”. Riiiight.
The look will be fine. It’s the less fortunate man’s Filson.
You can use HSA funds to buy Warby Parker prescription glasses, FWIW.
I bought the walnut Strands several years ago after seeing them on this site. They are attention-getters–I’ve gotten more compliments on them than any other item I wear. Worth the extra spend, especially since you can get them refurbed by AE. I put a thin catspaw sole on the bottom to extend the time between refurbs, too, and they still look great.
“Yes, it seems contradictory to have a double breasted blazer cut in such a casual fabric. But this thing has a shot. No nipple-level buttons, patch pockets reinforce the casual nature… this might be worth an in-person look…”
That blazer comes about an inch past the waistline, I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what defines a women’s blazer. I’m sorry, but a blazer that cropped is effeminate.
Oh it’s totally cropped, but that’s not what defines a woman’s blazer. Women’s blazers are flared, with bigger buttons and curvier lapels. That, and women wear them. While it’s a weird one for sure, it just doesn’t look like a women’s blazer to me. It ain’t “pretty” enough. If a woman wore that, I’d think she was wearing a dudes blazer. I disagree. Shorter does not = effeminate.
I ordered a few shirts based on the posting a week ago for this. Same build as you, basically, w/ 9″ chest-waist drop. Had to exchange the shirts because I misjudged the sleeve length, but for $30 you won’t find a better shirt. It’s a fantastic price.
I’m his muse. You’re welcome.
I was being hyperbolic when I said it defines a women’s blazer. But I do think this coat looks effeminate. Some may be going exactly for that though, I mean it worked for Sammy Davis (there’s a fine line between effeminate and rock star).
“I do think this coat looks effeminate.”
Correct. You might think it looks effeminate. But your opinion isn’t necessarily universally held. Nor is mine, which is the opposite opinion of yours. Just don’t cut something down in a vocal, absolute manner. That’s all I’m asking. I got this for the personal collection. Hasn’t arrived yet, but I guarantee if you saw me in it on the street, you wouldn’t think twice.
“Just don’t cut something down in a vocal, absolute manner.”
That’s a fair point. While I don’t think I should end every post with an IMO disclaimer, I should probably be more considerate of how something could be taken, especially when speaking in hyperbole. And you’re right, I probably wouldn’t think twice. I would think only once that it looks effeminate and go on my way.
