The Playlist – April 2014

April 29, 2014 By Tim Johnstone | Heads up: Buying via our links may result in us getting a commission. Also, we take your privacy rights seriously. Head here to learn more.

Music is a little like food and clothes. These are areas where it’s probably worthwhile for one to explore & expand their tastes. The Playlist is assembled each month by Dappered’s very own music correspondent, Tim Johnstone. Tim is a former Virgin Records Label Rep & current award winning Program Director at KRVB, which was awarded the FMQB AAA station of the year markets 50+. You can also catch his work on Fridays when he assembles the Weekend Dossier.

Jack White – “High Ball Stepper”

Sometimes there are no words. The first time I heard this, I had none. And the few I have now are probably not worthy.

Big Data featuring Joywave – “Dangerous”

(Totally and completely NSFW) This video is wrong on so many levels it just merits some kind of pat on the back. It is sexist and it is violent and it is juvenile. It is gory and it is sardonic and it is completely over the top. And I think that was the point. There’s a statement here. But the song? It is stone cold sexy. Seriously swaggering beats and attitude and it just leaves you pressing repeat. Love this.

The Afghan Whigs – “The Lottery”

Right back where they started. This is a good thing.

Lana Del Rey – “West Coast”

The hate for this woman amazes me. I just don’t get it. And what’s more, I’m pretty suspect about the usual reasons thrown out there. This is a bit of a change for her and I find myself digging it. And then there’s this.

Steel Panther – “The Burden Of Being Wonderful”

I was never into hair metal but I do enjoy perfectly crafted satire. These guys do it better than most. Chances are you know someone who will appreciate this, even if it is for the wrong reasons.

Total Control – “Flesh War”

I had never heard of these guys until I stumbled upon them on the interwebs. This is terrific post-wave with a whole lot of musical touchstones from Joy Division to the Human League. Goth kids rejoice.

Future featuring Andre 3000 – “Benz Freindz (Whatutola)”

(NSFW – language) I’m kind of hypnotized by this #$%! right here. Can’t help myself.

Robyn & Royksopp – “Do It Again”

The fact that Robyn is not as successful here in America as Katy Perry, or Lorde baffles me. She is fiercely talented and woefully under appreciated. Robyn teams up once again with the always spot-on Royksopp for another winner (I still love this one).

Led Zepellin – “Ramble On” (Souleance Re-Edit)

This is NOT your grandfather’s Led Zepellin. Although, weirdly, it could have been. As a rule, I give the side-eye to these kinds of remix shenanigans, but this is inventive.

Jack White – “Lazaretto”

Still looking for words. My word generation thingy bobber might have been blown out by these two new tracks by Mr. White.
